in real life i dont know any vegetarians (ive only met one in my life)

sheesh

I could very easily be a vegetarian but my wife would rather roll over and die than eat only veggies. Besides, her fried cube steak can't be beat.

i am, and have been for about 7 years.

p.s. by the way you said "silly" vegetarians, i gather you're going to go on and be an arsehole about it. whatever. i'll refute anything you say.

Our anscestors didn't get to the top of the food chain just so we could eat tofu (!)

if all i ate was vegtables, i would have to eat a whole lot. i don't think i would be able to sustain myself

humans didn't develop elongated digestive systems to eat meat.

then why the fuck do we have canines?

zorra_chiflada
08-17-2005, 10:08 PM
I thought vegetarians were militant

I read about them blowing up SPCA's and Mcdonalds across the world

yep. i'm evil and crazy. a commie too!

whatever. i'm not gonna die. and i'll probably live long as well. suck it.
my mother is a dietician, so i can assure you that i have a very healthy, balanced diet.

people get pissed off at vegetarians for the same reason that bush supporters hate liberals - they think they're "do-gooders"

TurdBerglar

well, i don't force my beliefs on anyone, i can assure you.
it's just that i find myself constantly having to defend my beliefs. some people think that because of the fact that i simply have beliefs, i am forcing it onto them.

whyd you decide to become one?

zorra_chiflada

ic
whyd you decide to become one?

a few reasons.
it started off for health reasons.
i like animals, and don't want to have them on my plate. and other various ethical reasons
i never really liked the taste.
buying meat is expensive.

btw, my boyfriend eats plenty of meat, and i don't try to stop him.

wouldnt you be hungry all the time if you were just eating grass and leaves all day?

tofu, "grass" and "leaves" is not all i eat. i'm never hungry. i eat plenty. i am not underweight.
however, i do not eat at McDonalds, KFC or any other fast food chains.
i think you might find that not all food in the world is meat.

the average vegetarian lives much longer than the average meat-eater, and has virtually no chance of heart disease.

the "canine" argument is bullshit. humans' canines have actually gotten smaller over our evolutionary history - when we were purely herbivores (pre- homo erectus) our canines were HUGE. look at gorillas. they have the biggest canines in the primate family, and they're completely vegetarian. they don't ever eat meat.

veggie here. vegetarian almost 4 years, vegan a year and a half.

i don't force it on anyone else, so don't try and force your views on me. it's a personal choice and it doesn't affect your life in one way so fuck off. it's the most environmentally healthy choice you can make in your life with the biggest impact.

i didn't say we were designed to eat only vegetables. i'm just saying the canine argument is flawed. modern humans evolved larger brains because they had richer diets when they started hunting and eating meat. it's not about that for me. it's an ethical and health choice - most meat out there is tainted with so many antibiotics and steroids and hormones and other toxins, it's barely edible. and i PERSONALLY can't stand the thought of consuming animal products. so i CHOOSE not to.

also - i would never force my vegetarian views on anyone else as you asses are trying to convince zorra that she should eat meat. my boyfriend can't be vegetarian, it would kill him because of an inflammatory bowel disease that he has - and i would never DREAM of even asking him to consider being vegetarian. i don't force it on anyone and i don't make anyone, even my family members, feel guilty about being omnivorous. it's a personal choice and it's not like we're going up to you and slapping burgers out of your fat mouths.

babies are the only humans intended to drink milk, and that's milk FROM A HUMAN MOTHER. we are the only mammals that drink milk beyond infancy, and the only mammals to regularly drink the milk of other mammals. we're all lactose intolerant to some degree. we're not set up to digest dairy.

the moral of the story, kids, is that it's a misconception that all vegetarians are militant and crusaders. sure, some may be...but does that mean all are? no. most aren't, and hate the stigma that comes with being labeled veggie. and not all of us agree with PETA. their tactics aren't very honest, and as an organization i'm not too fond of them. but that's a different issue. my point is...it's not changing the way you live...so what do you care? if it was a religious issue, no one would say peep for fear of offending someone. to me, this is as important ethically and morally as a religious tenet, so i get pretty pissed if someone tries to dissuade me from vegetarianism. but i can understand when people have honest questions about it, and am more than willing to answer to the best of my knowledge.

the moral of the story, kids, is that it's a misconception that all vegetarians are militant and crusaders. sure, some may be...but does that mean all are? no. most aren't, and hate the stigma that comes with being labeled veggie. and not all of us agree with PETA. their tactics aren't very honest, and as an organization i'm not too fond of them. but that's a different issue. my point is...it's not changing the way you live...so what do you care? if it was a religious issue, no one would say peep for fear of offending someone. to me, this is as important ethically and morally as a religious tenet, so i get pretty pissed if someone tries to dissuade me from vegetarianism. but i can understand when people have honest questions about it, and am more than willing to answer to the best of my knowledge.

then quit fucking saying being non fucking vegan or veggie fucker will give you fucking cancer!!!!!!

nice try ;)

i don't drink alcohol every day of my life; i consume it in moderation, very occasionally.

and i look out for my liver in other ways. the damage hormone- and steroid-filled meat does to your liver, in fact, your whole internal organ system, isn't something to balk at. if i were an alcoholic with a severely overtaxed liver, that'd be one thing. but i'm not.

heart disease DOES run in one side of my family, but really, being vegan i have nothing to worry about. cholesterol is only present in animal products - and besides that, i'm one of the most health-conscious people i know. i work at a health food store.

I think vegetarians raise some good questions about the meat we eat, I am concerned about pollutitives entering what I eat, weather it be steroids and medicines pumped into farm animals or through other means. However, I see those same dangers occurring in plant lives too through air pollution, water and land pollution (not to mention mensonto (sp?)). I grew up on a farm and prefer to eat meat from local farms I can trust, but unfortunately do not go with that option all of the time. For me personally, I make efforts to eat less meat in my diet, but don't think it is necessary to eliminate it entirely from my diet. I also think if survival is a priority for us as a human race, it is important to have diversity in many aspects, and therefore think it is important for vegetarians and meat-eaters and omnivores to exist.

I tried being a vegetarian for about six months once. Considering I was still in high shcool living with my mom I quickly ran out of things to eat. That and my mom took it upon herself to make sure she and my brother ate at all my favorite places and wouldn't give me anything.

since i started on the boards my opinion of vegetarianism / veganism has changed drastically. in the early years i'd mock and poke fun at the veggies. these days i completely respect and admire those dedicated or even just experimenting with it.

it's a lifestyle choice, i only wish i had the strength and courage to pursue more aggressively. i think one day i'll make the switch. i'd probably start with vegetarianism at first and slowly gravitate towards veganism over time.

g-mile7

well isnt that what most things in life are, choices? But frankly I dont see the ethics in the killing of plants, which everyone pretty much agree on being alive (how are we to say that plants do not have souls) and that of an animal. If its a religious, how do you say "god wouldnt want us killing animals for food", I say crack open the good book and see Jesus servin fish, an animal, to his disciples. Its a choice yes, but the fact is it's a choice that some, NOT YOU, try to force on people like religion. Now Im not saying thats its wrong or right, thats why Im asking for more spefic answers and what not, but from what I read its all pretty verbatim. But at least Im not saying thats its wrong, unlike some who think their opinion is truth (ie: 2pac is overated but Ive never listened to an entire 2pac cd ever, this and that blah)

no chance of heart disease that BULLSHIT!!!!!!

I actually agree with this. Heart disease can be caused by excess fat being consumed. Red meat is very fatty, but so are many things that vegans/vegetarians eat. Fries, chips, etc. I'm sure many veggies don't eat those things on a regular basis, but I'm also sure many do. bad logic.

the thing I was trying to get an F'n answer from, from people who do pratice and know about it. Didnt get it, basically to me from what I have read and heard is either 3 things:

Morals/Ethics: its not right to kill animals and eat them for food, I guess the reason becasue as many vegans/veggies ahve said that I have been round is that its not a pretty sight how they raise and kill the animals (gutting, slitting the throat and lettign it bleed to death) or the fact that many "cute" animals are being killed for food, note I am not a supporter of killing animals for sport AT ALL (so there you are animal activist) I am higly against that but there is a diffrence between eating, its a basic primla urge instill into us either by god or program. The typical answer, I know, is that we are mor civilized then the animal kingdom, why should we revert back into are primal urges thus defeating evoultuion? The fact is that who we are, people been eating meat since the time of the bible before everyone decided to become PC bout shit.

Health: Some people need to eat just veggies for various reason such as heart/chlestrol and so forth, thus the reason they are vegans becasue they have to. For many though its becasue they either dont agree with how the meat is processed or how it introduces blood (becasue you cant cook it all out) from an animal that could make them sick, thus the whole Mad cow scarce. But the fact is there are many nutrients from MEat that veggies no matter what you say or what pills you be poppin cant replace. It is fact. Plus Veggies no matter how organic you say it is, still have some risk of contimants, after all the shit you eat was basically created from shit, if you understand any basic knowledge of how plants and food from mother earth grows (thus the adage that we never trully die for you could very well be eating a an apple that had a worm that ate parts of elvis, gross I know but bare with me)

Social: Also the fact that all of sudden it is the IN thing to do, these are the people I really dont respect, just being vegans or what not casue they are trying to rebel against the system or becasue they see that Pam Lee or Moby dont like meat. Frankly I really do feel that some, if not the majority, of the supposed crusaders for animals are really just doing it becasue they dont want to be conformist....which is exactlly what they are doing in the first place, conforming

So in other words, yes Cosmo or whoever is a vegan I know alot for someone who doesnt practice Veganism. I have done reports on both the food industry as meat and veggies and from what I have read (The Jungle the most famous of them all, The Pathlogical Protein, Food Fight, and The Demon in the Freezer which features a boy who was raised Vegan all his life untill he finally had his frist burger at camp which was dropped on the ground, thus making it a deadly having to have his intestines removed from his body, washed, and put back inside yikes) so if you think I dont know anything at all, from what it seemed like to the response I recieved, your wrong but I do not know as much as those who do, I am an outsider looking in. I really dont see the point of it, I really dont doesnt mean I dont respect it though, espically if the person is sincere about there choice

In the end Alice Walker said something that "the animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men." (supirsed I knew that huh some of you?) which saids alot for the cause

so I hope that shows a little bit more info about the subject from someone who doesnt really think its all that benifical.

it all comes down to this, just like with drinking and smoking weed, all those things can be bad in excess but in moderation the postives otuweigh the good if the person knows what the hell they are doing.

The few vegans/vegetarians i have met have looked very sickly/weak. maybe just a coincidence, or maybe they just aren't meeting a daily balance of nutrients. i think it's great if someone can do it, but only if they can do it healthily. so yeah, good job to anyone who eats whatever; as long as you're healthy.

well true, but the amount of those nutrients is the key homie. JUst becasue it's there (protein for example) doesnt mean its not there, if not more, in meat. Plus the best imitation meat stuff is imitation of the fattiest meats, and the soy stuff is low fat. This is stuff like soy sausage, soy burgers, soy salami...

in the end it is your mind, hell I have eaten supposed veggie burgers before (chicken thats not reeally chicken) and it taste as good if not better as the actual. I even dated a girl who is now a vegan, and I would have gladly tired to cut my meat intake/try her beliefs ( she wanted any futre kids to be raised as such) just because it was here, so obvisouly Im not that strongly pro-meat, but I still will eat it at a cook out, Most of it is also culture, you think black people for example, and the sterotype which is some what true (I think I can say this since I am well you know) is meat eating people, it would look damn foolish for me to be at a cookout and not have some ribs, its how your raised and what is part of your culture/society

Being vegan would be a pain in the ass and a fiber train to dookieville. Vegetables have important nutrients in them... like complex and simple carbs, and fiber, and vitamins, and yes, even protein and some fat, but I need a lot more than a bunch of dumb vegetables to have energy and be healthy. I mean, sure I could live on salads. I'm sure concentration camp dudes would love to get their hands on some salad. Those dudes in The 'Nam who live on cockroaches, I'm sure they'd be like "yummy! Salad!"

Did you ever see the movie Ravenous? Ohhh it's a great film and I lurved it. It starts with Captain John Boyd (Guy Pearce) being rewarded for being a hero at the end of the Mexican-American war. The first part of his reward is a medal ("for cowardice above and beyond the call of duty") and the second part is a hearty steak banquet. The steak meal is some of the most well done editing (sound and picture) I've seen in a while, and one of the best arguments for becoming a vegetarian ever, period.

I remember the theatrical trailers for this movie, and I KNEW it was going to be good. As soon as I saw that blonde guy flexing every muscle in his body as he rages waist deep in a freezing mountain stream, I knew I wanted to see it.

It might be a metaphor for homosexuality (there are almost no women in the movie. The men feed off one another, a man gets stronger by eating another man. A man takes another man into his body and the feeling is euphoric, he becomes more powerful, virile, an ANIMAL, through this native legend of the Wendigo. The way I understood it, this could only be achieved by one man eating another man, no women were mentioned.)

Anyway, my point I was getting for bringing this up is in relation to vegetarians looking sickly. Two of the main characters played by Guy Pierce and Robert Carlyle have excellent unspoken charisma. They're both deliciously (har har) expressive and furtive, high cheek bones flushed and eyes dewy with fierce anticipation and adrenaline. That look to me it's hunger, they actually starved themselves to a certain extent as being in character and went on all meat diets... hell, it's a "hungry" look, like the eye of the tiger. You starve a man and he becomes lean and mean, either that or he dies. It's all about will and inspiration and the rest. This is why the leaner a person is, the more they appear volatile, like a raging ferret or something. I don't mean skinny I mean lean. I (attempt to) stay lean for such a purpose. It keeps the eye of the tiger on the loose and prowling around!

I wish I had the determination to be a vegetarian, I mean I know all the environmental, health, and economic consequences of eating meat, and I know as somebody who believes in positive change, I really should practice what I preach. But I dont know where I would start, or how I would get around the fact that my whole family are big meat eaters, like 6-7 nights a week.

And I could never be a vegan, because that would mean giving up beer :(

you assholes saying i'm fat?

seriously though, there's not ONE reason that vegetarians/vegans choose to live that way. it varies from person to person. for me, part of it is health, but mostly my own moral convictions, and no, i'm not going to go into them.

yes, some vegans don't do it correctly and end up losing tons of muscle mass and becoming deficient in a lot of nutrients. but that's mostly the teenagers that just do it because they think it'll be a cool thing to brag about.

the real hardcore vegans that know what they're doing have nothing to worry about. it's not like vegans haven't been around for that long...my boss was vegan for a good 30 years of his life, but decided to start bodybuilding some, so he began eating dairy again. but he eats only organic, so that's a step better in that not only is the milk healthier, but the cows are guaranteed to be treated better during their lives.

it amazes me how some people get into such a fuss over OTHER PEOPLE being veggie. as if it's some horrible lifestyle that goes against all that is holy and right. most of us are harmless, you know.

i'm not vegan just because i love animals.

i'm vegan because i fucking hate plants.

I'll start off by saying that even hardcore vegans need to worry about vitamin b12. My dad is a vego and he has pernicious anaemia which is from lack of vitamin b12 and can be fatal.

OK i'm not vegetarian though i wish i could be sometimes but yeah. BEing vegetarian isn't necessarily healthier for you. Red meat is a rich source of iron and spinach needs to be taken with vitamin c to absorb the iron.

Other than what i said though supplements are by no means necessary for vegetarians. You can get all the nutrients you need from plants or legumes. You say they're all skinny, well you should see my dad, he's actually fatter after becoming a vegetarian.

I was veggie for a few years.

Now I'm not. Thats mostly coz of a weak will and sharing my life with a non veggie.

But really! What the hell is wrong with people making a moral and health choice about their own diet. Stop trying to tell people what to eat!

And don't come back with the argument that veggies try to tell us all what to eat! They don't! They are too busy defending their right to choose from people who see other points of view as an attack on their own.

Noooo, cos said there is an increased risk. Not that it will definately happen.

As for "hearing" your typed words, learn to fucking comprehend what others are saying. Yes I can't actually hear you, but when someone says that you sound a certain way on a message board, they are refering to the tone of your reply. If you had the reading comprehension of a ten year old, you would understand that though.

And if the meat that you buy (sorry, YOUR MOM buys) isn't organic, and if you don't raised it and slaughter it yourself, how, oh wise one, do you know if it does or does not have steroids in it? Answer me that.

From what I've read, we all use to get B12 from fresh water sources from the bacteria that lived in the water. This bacteria has been killed off from pollution.

vitamin B12 is lacking in most vegan and vegetarian diets. you can easily get a supplement for it. i take a good liquid B complex that's extra high in the B12. it really gives you energy and stamina without jitters.

vegans NEED to take at least a multivitamin. i remember once reading an article about a woman that was vegan for decades but never took any supplements and ended up losing her eyesight.

the ethical reasoning behind veganism is so logically flawed.

cosmo105
08-19-2005, 01:09 PM
how is it flawed?

i, personally, cannot stand the thought of eating something that was once alive in every sense that i am. something that felt pain when it was killed. i can't be the end of that line. i love animals and can't eat them. and as far as dairy and eggs go, well...aside from health reasons, the animals used for dairy and eggs eventually are killed for food purposes as well.

how is it flawed? well...i should say "flawed" when they attempt to place it on anyone but themselves (or in a universal sense).
but it's still shakey, regardless.

i, personally, cannot stand the thought of eating something that was once alive in every sense that i am. no other animal on this planet is as mentally or emotionally complex as humans.

define "alive".

something that felt pain when it was killed. you mean, as in "nervous system" pain?
i believe it's been shown that some plants appear to have rudimentary nervous systems...that react to damaging stimuli.

i can't be the end of that line. i love animals and can't eat them. you don't love plants? why not? (i actually have a point in saying that. i'm not just being a wise-ass).

in a 12-ounce can of coke there are 155 calories. 155! that's so much! just an extra 45 calories a day over a year will make you gain 5 pounds. seriously, it's empty, sugary calories. the caffeine and sugar gets you on a high and as soon as you're off it you crash, really low. it's a terrible source of nutrition, and it rots your teeth. high fructose corn syrup is really awful for you as well. i know soda tastes good and all, but it's worse for you than you think. cut down on that stuff and start drinking water. lots and lots of water.

Works for me.

There was a thing called a "Love Feast" at Opus. Someone put beef jerky in my mouth because I couldn't tell what it was by looking at it. I'm sure the look on my face must'a been priceless.

------

I prefer to eat plants vs. Animals because plants have square cells instead of round/amorphic cells. Everybody knows that square cells taste better.

I prefer to eat things that don't have brains, pain receptors and the like. I'm poor as fuck and I still find the means to eat healthy. Helps to have so many cooperative dinners and potlucks available locally I guess.

I prefer to eat food that conserves energy to produce. Rather than feed a conduit like a cow a gagillion gallons of water and 18 gagillion bushels of corn, I'd rather just have some corn and drink some water.

Media like Morgan Spurlock's Movie and Eric Shlosser's book tend to make me feel much better about being a vegetarian. Corporations like IBP and Conagra and McDonals will gladly ignore your health until it becomes a profit risk.

Word.

oh god, this shit is still going on?

i was just waiting for qdrop to come in here and say how it "defies human nature" or some shit. i'm still waiting for him to call me "sanctimonious" again.
people always do this. what people don't understand, they fear.
i find it very interesting that everyone had an issue with "silly vegetarians pushing their views on everyone" but this thread is basically a bunch of idiots bashing vegetarians for no reason at all, and pushing their beliefs on to us. i mean, what the fuck? i don't know if this an american thing or what, but i'd like to know why there is such contempt for particular minorities.
:(
I feel for you guys. This thread is embarassing for those of us who do eat meat, but don't have anything against vegetarians and vegans. I know you gys aren't pushing your views on anyone else here. I hope some people here grow up and look back on this thread and learn from their stupidity. *hugs all the board veggies*

Two of my older friends have been vegetarians for 30 years. These two women are old school, hippie types. They're both very healthy.

A lot of younger girls who do it aren't so healthy. My niece lived on salsa and chips and candy when she was a "vegetarian."

I'm not a vegetarian. I don't eat much meat, but I'm too lazy to give it up. Especially broth. I love soup and it's difficult to make good soup without animal broth. It's amazing to me how many things have hidden animal products.

Things are getting a little easier. My friends used to eat grilled cheese in every restaurant. We have lots of good veggie restaurants here now. And one of those old school women went to Chicago with me and we ate at a Spanish restaurant. We called ahead and they made some paella with vegetable broth just for her!

the problem i have with vegans and vegetarians....

are the ones who try and state Ethical reason behind there actions...

as opposed to those who just don't like the taste of meat and the chemicals within (health).

the ethical reasoning behind veganism is so logically flawed.
They just don't like the thought of that cute cow being killed for a meal on your plate. I have nothing against that and in some cases agree with it.

What i am seriously against is battery farming. It is a complete lack of animal rights

I guess I'm not a vegetarian in the traditional sence. I don't eat red meat or chicken, but I'm sure the things I eat on a regular basis have animal products in them. I still eat cheese (though I drink soy milk), I like fish, and I'm fairly certian the beans at Taco Bell have pig lard in them. But I never liked the taste of red meat, and I'm saving tons of money not buying fast food.

the whole "i don't like it when vegetarians push their beliefs down my neck" bullshit is stupid. This thread was made to bash vegetarians. My parents are always bashed (not literally) for being vegos even by other family. I mean seriously how is it any of your business what they decide to do.

And i'm sure animals would feel mor pain than plants because they have a brain. It isn't perfect but they gotta eat something right?

vegatarians fuck up the world by not following th food chain. there fucking dum animals WHO GIVES A SHIT!!!!!!
THe food chain isn't a perfect set of rules we need to follow. We have the ablity to make our own choices. Plus the food chain is hardly effected because they're still plenty of meat eaters

I have a friend who thinks I'm trying to push vegetarianism on him. all I've done was let him borrow a Morrissey DVD (which had the film "Meet your Meat" on it), and told him I'd cook him a vegetarian dinner sometime. he gets angry at me whenever I bring it up. Its gotten to the point of humor, so when he says anything to me about being a vegetarian, I shoot back with a "At least I don't have blood on my hands, murderer" or some such. I'm not that militant, trust me.

Chicken is the one thing keeping me from going veg. I've pretty much given up all red meat, except for the occasional scotch egg. Veggie burgers are just as tasty as beef, and turkey pepperoni is even better and less fattening than regular pepperoni. But chicken...god, so yummy. Hell, if I could go veggie I could probably go vegan fairly easily, because dairy usually makes me sick and (with the exception of the aforementioned scotch eggs) I don't like eggs. I could make that transition with relative ease, but I just can't give up chicken. *sigh*

Veggie burgers are just as tasty as beef,

damn straight. unless you're talking about Boca Burgers. taste like a fucking newspaper. but I had these soy burgers (can't remember what they're called, Smart something) that tasted soooo good, and they were low in fat and saturated fats, and they were very filling. I can only eat a half of one before I'm full.
