I use my phone as an MP3 player but something small like this - http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=ELEC&title=509304&p=321&g=409&pa=sr would be a first look. But don't buy that one.
My mate has an MP3 player that is 1GB uses one AAA battery for about 50 hours play and there is no cables, the usb port (2.0 compatable) is part of the actual player so you just plug it in, no wires, no software and it's piss easy to use. But I cannot remember the make. It was only about £50.00 as well.
Go down to the electric store and they'll be loads. People just buy IPODS because they have an extreme advertising campaign and see nothing else. But they are massive, hard to use and come with head phones that say "I have a crazy expensive gadget with me and would be a prime target to mug".
Another thing that annoys me is - one of the latest BMW's has a USB port but they call it an IPOD connection. We'll all start calling USB's IPOD connections soon unless people stop buying them...
Their whole campaign and monopoly is just ripping off the MP3 buying public!

40gb is excessive if you ask me. I've only got 17.6 GB of music and at any one time will only be interested in listening to about 10% of it. The only time I can see 40gb being useful is a massive long vacation where you have no access to your computer. I think my new mobile plays mp3's, I should check that out

I have way more than that but in my experience you normally end up listening to the same albums more than once instead of listening to different albums.

yeah that's the same point I was trying to make, I tend to listen to just a few albums while the rest just sits there getting no love. Some people may use it, and the file transfer thing is good, but for my money I'll stick with dvd burning for that.

I have a creative Nomad that I bought a few years ago. It only has like 256 mb of space which holds a decent amount of songs. All I use it for is jogging/gym time which is only like 2 1/2 hours max at one time. So it's not like I ever hear the same track twice unless I want to...

The reason BMW call it an iPod connector is because that's exactly what it is. It has an iPod specific SCSI connector on, and is built in to the car's head unit. You can then use the head unit to control the iPod - Alpine make a similar item, again specific to the iPod.
Cars like the Toyota Aygo have a connector which allows you to plug in any MP3 player, as the socket in the head unit is just a regular headphone jack.
Anyway, what do you have against iPods? I have one and love it. And I got over the earphone problem (which isn't really a problem) by getting Sony noise cancelling earphones instead.

See to me that's like Coke designing a special bottle and BMW making "Coke Holders" that will only hold Coke's special bottle. It makes the ipod the default when there's plenty of other options available. I'm betting Apple would've done a deal with BMW over this one, too.

I have an MP3 player and I like it fine.
I bought the sport lyra (http://www.qvc.com/asp/frameset.asp?aol_refer=false&msn_refer=false&nest=http://www.qvc.com/scripts/detail.dll?item=E137908!tpl=DETAIL!ref=GOG&ref=GOG&cm_ven=GOOGLEFEED&cm_cat=ELECTRONICS&cm_pla=PORTABLE%20ELECTRONICS&cm_ite=E137908) for maybe $100 a couple of months ago.
I bought it mainly because I trashed my last one by dropping
it in water; this one is water resistant.
If I remember correctly, an iPod was either very expensive (>$200)
and was overkill for me or it was cheaper (iPod shuffle) but didn't have
the features that I wanted/needed.
I'm fine with the MP3 player. I bought some songs from iTunes and was
able to get them onto my MP3 player no problem.
The main problems with this lyra are:
I hate the head-clippie things that came with it.
If I'm listening to, say, song 2 and press the "go back" button
once to restart song 2, it goes to the start of song 1.
The calorie counter feature is dumb.
The heartrate monitor and stopwatch are useful, but
they're pretty much rendered useless because of the
awkward user interface. (It's not as easy as it should be
to get to these features. You pretty much have to stop
doing what you're doing to bring them up and that defeats
their purpose or at least renders the readings
less accurate than they could be.)
It comes with a bunch of "Audibles" (book-segments on
tape). It's easy to get yourself into that section from the music
section by listening to the first song in the music folders
and then hitting the go back button. Maybe this is a feature
to some, but I thought the Audibles were dumb and never really
wanted to go in there, so getting there by accident was frustrating.
I wound up connecting the MP3 player to my PC and deleting the
entire Audibles folder.

it could be more justifiable for some of the people inside the music business to buy these kinds of things, though. althogh ALL their music collection?... hmmm, maybe, in some cases...but for what actually? in what situation woudl they need it all, maybe to use a song as an example for a certain rhythm or beat, but if theyre musicians they wouldnt need the song, or maybe its a really different particular beat and they can only transmit it clearly by hearing the actual song, mmm, maybe in THAT specific example.

First of all: I've had two ipods and no problems with the battery, but then I use and recharge mine every single day. I think that if you don't use it often, there will be problems, and I think that's shameful. You should be able to pick it up after a week or so and have it work.

When I was in college, everyone had walkmans and no one talked to each other in the halls or common rooms. :)
but see, thats the thing, this new "i need to have all my music with me", if youre not at your house, are you really gonna go through all your songs/albums to get to a specific song, and then look for another one, i mean, its a silly thing to have with you all the time, its a silly thing for these people to sell "have ALL your music with you all the time", theres something totally unnecesary with that idea.
Well, first of all, my 40 gig ipod only contains 8500 songs, so I can't take ALL my music with me. Not even close. But it's difficult to know what I'm going to be in the mood for. Tonight it was Nick Drake. Last night, it was a bunch of random electronic music.
I will admit that when I went on a big road trip with my best friend last week, we plugged in my ipod and played stuff on random. The sad thing was that I didn't recognize a whole bunch of songs that came up. And I have no idea who ELO's Rockaria got in there!!! :o But then we brought up Rhino's Have a Nice Decade and got to hear lots of hilarious bad 70s songs!

I mean, seriously you don't need one and you ipeople, stop being a fucking tool of the what is wrong with the corporate world! You'll all burn in hell
hilarious article. i was anti-IPOD for the longest time too.
then this (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Apple-30GB-Color-iPod-with-Video-MA146LLA-/sem/rpsm/oid/137196/catOid/-12952/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do) appeared. it's pretty slick. i also know i'd fill it, the first day. no shame in having your collection backed up thrice and commandeering any stereo with a simple rca cable.

Heh, Maddox is gonna be pissed when he sees that guy trying to be him.....unless it is actually Maddox and he's just fucking with everyone again.
I love reading the threads about people hating iPods...but I have one and I like it, end of story. I don't care what people think about me because of it, and at the end of the day as corporations go, I'd much rather give my money to Apple than a company like Sony or HP.

^meh, don't buy one. Why the fuck do you need such an expensive gadget to carry around with you? Planning on giving muggers a higher reward? Still up to you though

Apple are as bad as Sony & HP. There are loads of other mp3 players.
It's all big business. They'll be a backlash like they was with coke on ipods with their over the top marketing. Like when coke started with product placement. When you are thirsty are you really thirsty for a coke or buying into the brand? You'll find yourself buying into the brand 9 times out of 10! Buy water if your thirsty, cus it will actually quench your thrist.
God damn yuppies the lot of you!

Exactly
And as I keep getting told I look kinda scary I doubt it would happen even if I elected to use the Apple white headphones (which I don't).
My iPod is more of a car based jukebox, and occasionally makes it into my office when I'm on nights, accompanied by my rather nifty Altec Lansing inMotion speakers.
Adam, owning an iPod doesn't make you a yuppie...seriously man.

you have! i was considering it and then thought of this thread and the whole battery life thing...and decided against it. what's a better option? i'm thinking Creative or Toshiba.

I know that some models of creative players have headphone jack problems, but I still want a Zen.

creative zen extra!
kind of big. no larger then a small walkman though. a very small walkman. all creative mp3 players have the same guts. and the zen extras are much less money then the smaller zens and have much more hard disc space. all the creative mp3 players are considered to have the best sound quality of all mp3 players on the market. GET ONE!

hrm. i'd kind of like a smaller one, something that i could take with me on jogs and working out. i don't need a ton of space. it'd be nice if it had the same portability cababilities of the ipod, but if not, well, it's ok. i have a crap-ass RCA deal that i got as a gift years ago. it has like 32 mb internal memory but a slot for a memory card...but the battery hutch thing is broken and i'd have to tape it shut with electrical tape :\ i used to love that little thing though. it held enough music for a workout and had a great little arm strap. *sigh*

those small ones are a jip. the 5 gig version cost just as much as the 40 gig version of the zen extra. i wouldn't have a problem with them if the small ones didn't cost so much. im just saying that it's a much better deal for the larger ones. they're not that big. i take mine bikeing with me.
$230 for 5 gig or $230 for 40 gig?

hrm, true. but i like the little design of the micro ones. the thing is i don't really need that much storage, and i'd rather have something that wasn't too bulky. i'm trying to save up for one. i'll have my squad of techies (my brother and steger) advise me on this one.

cosmo105

no, the aerodynamics are not a problem as my body is sleek and has been tested in wind tunnels for aerodynamic design.
i just don't want some huge thing bouncing and slapping all over the place at my waist like a rectangular plastic penis. i'd rather have a small little rectangle securely attached to my arm.

Jenn's friend wanted a small mp3 player as she's gone travelling round Australia and New Zealand for a few months. I got her a Creative Zen Nano plus 512mb - it cost about £65 (but it would be much cheaper in the US), and I manged to fit 12 albums on it at medium quality (which was still pretty good). It runs on 1 x AAA battery, and that should be good for about 12 hours. And it's about the size of 2 lip balms (y)

word. i bought a 64 mb back in 2001 for like $150. it broke in action and i ended up with an RCA lyra (currently worth $39). i never got around to putting any music on it, because my comp kept crashing when i tried to install the software for it. after reading your post, i got it out, plugged it in and dragged 12 tracks on to it, no problems.
it has the expansion slot too. if i can tote around 24 tracks for the eventual bike ride to work, it has a purpose. i'll use it until it busts before i think about getting anything else.

And well done to cosmo for having her own mind and not buying in to the culture. (y)
Don't be a tool. My next task is to stop two people buying an ipod. That'd £400 quid less to Apple and some money to some less evil corporation!

They are MP3 players that are a million times better, cheaper, smaller, better sound quality and hold more. Plus they are evil!
iPODs are a waste of fucking money. All of my friends' iPODs were shot to shit after like 4 months. You're better off getting a Dell DJ. I hate trendy fuckers. (n) Every person I see with an iPOD I pray to GOD it falls between the tracks. You know the outcome of that. :D

Another thing that annoys me is - one of the latest BMW's has a USB port but they call it an IPOD connection. We'll all start calling USB's IPOD connections soon unless people stop buying them...
Their whole campaign and monopoly is just ripping off the MP3 buying public!
