"... Chillin' at the beach down at Club Med."

Was there ever a rumor about Mike dying, or, was he just wildin' out?

I specifically remember hearing a rumor back in 1988sh that Mike D. had overdosed. Unfortunately I don't remember where I heard it...

i didn't hear that, and I was into PB VERY early on in LA.

But, that doesn't really mean shit. I was more under the impression that he was referring to the fact that the Beasties took a hiatus after LTI and they were "back from the dead," producing another album (this was back when vinyl still was bigger than CD's - remember the line : "I'm cutting the wax, i'm not using the CD...I'm that kid in the corner....all fucked up..." etc.).

Anyhow, if Mike D. were rumored dead, it would make sense as well, but I'd be curious if someone REALLY in the know could clear it up for us all.....

Actually the line is "listening to wax" not "cutting the wax".

The rumor was before PB was ever released. I don't think it was ever officially reported by any news organizations or in any publications...but i REALLY did hear the rumor.

I'll do some googling and see I come up with anything official though.

Shake your rump was the first single released from PB back in around May of 89. I know, because I bought it the day it came out. I bought all the singles from that album.

The rumor was going on back in 88, kids I knew were telling me it, but i never really believed it. This was after the LTI tours. When adrock was making his movie and stuff. I remember listening to the radio in sacramento, my childhood friend John Hennings aka DJ Count Mixula on the high school station - only hip hop show in Sac at the time KYDS (last I heard he deejayed for The Beat - hip hop station in Sacto) said at the time "ok there's a rumor going around Mike D o.d.'ed and died. let me tell you all now, it's just a rumor. Mike D did not die."

that's how i remember it.
