I remember the pop rocks death rumor too - it's nearly as old as the rumor of Marilyn Monroe having 6 toes on one foot.

My father told me that when Coca-Cola was invented and first entered the public market that it was rumored to have an actual small amount of cocaine in with the other ingredients.

I remember hearing that at one time, only two people
knew the formula for coca-cola and that they were never
allowed to ride in the same plane together in case it
crashed. It's probably another urban legend, though.
Around 1987, I heard that Jan Brunvand--the guy who
wrote about urban legends originally--started his own
rumor to see if it took off as an urban legend. This info
came from the most reliable source possible, so I doubt
that it, in itself, was an urban legend.

from Snopes.com: "(Contrary to the rumor, John Gilchrist, the lad who played Mikey, not only survived his childhood unexploded, but is now an advertising-account manager for a New York radio station."
