View Full Version : Why do Republicans go on The Daily Show?

They get their asses handed to them on a big, shiny, liberal platter. Jon Stewart usually holds their feet pretty close to the fire, so I don't see why they'd want to do that.
My brother believes that it's because they're cocky and full of themselves. The same reason why Nixon kept his recorded tapes, and why Karl Rove appeared on Time magazine the next week after the whole "leak" story came out, with a smug grin on his face. I think they go on the show to try to show they're not afraid or intimidated, and proud of the fact that they're corrupt and hell if they're going to let anyone tell them they're wrong. But then they get pwned.
Damn, I love Jon. (y)

I think the fact that it's on Comedy Central plays a big part in it. Hell he pwns them, but it's a comedy show so it doesn't really matter to them.

That's also true, but so many people praise it as being an actual legitamate news source now, so it's still sort of surprising.

But do the Republitards that go on that show know that? Or do they just think "Haha Comedy Central. I'll be hip with the kids if I go on that show."

Possibly. A lot of people have been taking the show more seriously since the whole Crossfire incident, and I believe the Daily Show has even been quoted in newspapers. (!)
But I think it's more of "I don't give a shit about this show, I'll show those liberal kids who's boss" type thing, rather than trying to be popular with them.

I don't know which guests you are referring to, but I think it's because the show is so important, that you literally can't ignore The Daily Show. Like it or not, you're gonna appear on it.
And Jon likes to have guests from all sides of the spectrums, so I welcome the conservative dingbats to come on just as I welcome the crackpot liberals. :D
Yes, Jon Stewart will rake the conservative guests over the coal, BUT he is nice to them about it. Even if they come away all speechless and have to answer to some tough questions, they still seem to come away enjoying themselves.
If he's being too tough on any guest, he'll start deflecting all the weight on them with some cute quips.
Because I don't think Jon wants to turn his show into a Crossfire or an O'Reilly Factor where he's gonna yell at them for the entire 10 minute segment. Do you seriously want Jon to stoop to Bill's level and go: "SHUTUP!"
Bottom line is: Jon is tough, but fair with his guests. And I like that about him. (y)

I'd like that if O'Reilly was on and Jon did that, then started giggling and said "Just kidding."

He probably would. (y)
I liked it when O'Reilly was on the show and Stewart made light of the "stoned slackers" being the core Daily Show audience (according to Bill). Then Bill went: "Oh, Jon. You know I was stoned when I said that!" :D

Hahahahaha! :D
Dammit, I just laughed at something O'Reilly said that was SUPPOSED to be funny.

we had in australia the "weekly daily show" which was basically the highlights of the daily show crammed into one weekly show.
it didn't last very long, which is a shame because i really liked it.

That makes about as much sense as the toilet flushing to the left. :D

Bottom line I think is that Jon stewart commands respect from all guests because he is so REAL, unlike most of the talking necks we see on the news networks.

This is from an interview (http://avclub.com/content/node/39550/1) with Steve Carell in The Onion's A/V Club. It might not be a universal explanation, but it is some inside insight...
AVC: What were your favorite and least favorite field pieces on the show?
SC: ... My favorite might have been an interview I did with John McCain in his campaign bus. He was extremely playful and fun, and just a very charming man. To gain access to him was an interesting experience.
AVC: Plus he's a friend of the show.
SC: I think he became a friend of the show after that piece. He liked it so much, he played it on a loop in his campaign bus.
AVC: That's interesting, because with some politicians, you feel it's kind of a way to court the younger audience. "Look how hip I am!"
SC: I think so. I think it's a way to seem palatable to a younger demographic. But that's also very manipulative. I think in a lot of ways, they just kind of see where their potential voting bloc is skewing, and look at it that way, as opposed to truly being fans of what the show is saying and representing. So I think there's a very cagey aspect to that as well, in terms of public figures jumping on the show's bandwagon and endearing themselves. I guess better to endear themselves and potentially be looking like a cool sort of self-deprecating politician as opposed to someone who's bearing the brunt of the joke.

I've been watching the show since the days of Craig Kilborn, and I've seen the show grow and soar in popularity. I've also noticed more and more serious irony content, I think it has become more serious in some ways and covers it all up with the poop jokes and stuff so they can whipe their hands clean upon criticism (does that make any sense? - I at least understand what I'm trying to say). I think the republicans see it's success and things like the study that said more of the audience of the Daily Show answered political survey correct. So, they want to be a part of it or try and conquer it (it is their way! ;) ) or both.
I saw Bill Oreilly on the Conan show once too and he made the same "pot" shots right in Conans face, but in my opinion he hadn't realized how well Conan actually served him up (or very least kept it on a non issue)!
Finally, I would remark that one time I heard the back in the days the rep/dem battle was vicious on the floor, but afterwards they could get together and have a drink and more socially ineteract and that is changing into and all-or nothing winner-takes all aftertaste and it isn't as social afterwards. I see the Daily Show more as the former and the Oreilly as the latter.
my observations. if anyone cares ...

I don't know either but maybe it's just for the exposure. Maybe some
of them want to come off as sounding cool or something. But it always
feels a little like I want to cringe when I see someone on there that
maybe shouldn't be. Sometimes, JS is very, very kind and patient with them.
Maybe a little too much so. I love it when he has someone on from Fox.
I saw Lewis Black live last Fall and someone heckled him. Repeatedly.
Why would someone do that? He could have blown that person away
but he showed so restraint. You could see that he was about to blow
but he kept it together and only half-blew them away.

I'm guessing because the kids watch the show, the republicans pretend to love the kids, and think that the kids will find them more loveable than Cliff Huxtable.

Spending all that money on tickets to heckle someone = loser.
I hate George W. Bush with all my black little heart, but I would never dream of paying to go tell him he's a douchebag. He already knows it.

I knew someone who went to college in Rochester. Then he failed out and went to community college here. His name was Yakov, and I have no idea where he is now.

One other thing I'd have to say is that when politicians appear on The Daily Show (whether they're Democrat or Republican), I think they immediately appear more human.
For example, I hated Ari Fleischer during his time as White House Press Secretary. But when he went to The Daily Show, he seemed very relaxed and he could say whatever he felt like. When they're "on duty" (i.e. in office), I think they have a gag over them and can say only very little.
Once they leave office, they're immediately much more palatable.

politicians are all convinced that they're charming. no one tells them any different. they're surrounded by yes men.
a lot of the worst performances on the daily show are by democrats.
news people tend to come off the best.

Very nice debate tonight between Stewart and Christopher Hitchens. I have found a new level of admiration for him as he really hit the nail on head when he was talking about reasonable dissent and why it is happening in this country.

Most appear to sell their books.
Remember money is the most important thing in a Republican's life.

You're right but how many libs do you see going on Rush Limbaugh's show pushing their book?

i've seen a fair share of democrats get their asses called out by Stewart as well...
he likes to invite Garofalo on his show, then get into a nice debate with her, but since they are chums nothing is off limits...
he is the Advocate of Devil's Advocates...
