Well just speaking strictly from my (admittedly limited) experience with Australians... they can, in fact, drink more.

See here in England, we got us a whole mess of people who think they can drink a lot, but it's just that they are bingers and cram a load of it down thier necks in a fairly short period of time. Then they go to the bus stop and brawl. National pastime, really. For the chicks, too.

But all of the Autralians I've met can drink much more over a longer period of time, and still be rather genial and good-natured, and not turn hours of beer consumption into a desire to kick in their mate's skull.

So, Brits are sprinters, but Aussies are marathon runners, in other words.

When I first met the guy that I'm with, he told me that he
was from Australia and that he didn't drink. My reaction to that
was, "Great. A drinker and a liar." :) But in all of the years
that I've been with him, he's only had a sip of a drink and that was
at a wedding during the toast. I was so wrong about him.

I know about 30 Australians and only about 3 of them drink.
One drinks hard and heavy :( and the others just drink a glass
of wine with dinner.

sections that I visited last are getting majorly flooded. :(

I know about their drinking--wow, but those people can put it away.
I guess with every other shop being a pub, it's pretty easy to build
up a strong tolerance. :)
