Help re German travel

This is early, but I'm going to Germany in September of 2006 to hook up with a friend in Berlin and then we will probably go to Prague. I have a week before we hook up where I can do other stuff. I was briefly in West Germany in 1987 and that's it (I messed that up by partying too much). I would love some advice for what cities are must sees.

On an unrelated note, I have a strong desire to go to Iceland. Apparently you don't want to do that in the winter because it's awfully dark.

I highly recommend getting a train (http://www.howtogermany.com/pages/trains.html) over into Switzerland and hiking
in the alps and then maybe going into Lucern or Zurich for a few days.
Bring good hiking shoes and use hiking poles on that hike. Maybe leave
time for at least a long day of hiking; you won't regret it. (There are some
peaks that you can climb, unguided, in a half-day and the views are amazing.)

My parents went to Reykjavik in Iceland in April and it was very dark. It's like that pretty much all year round, only not so bad in the winter. So you should expect that in whatever season, really.

you should spend a week in Berlin, you won't get bored

if you insist on travelling around, go see Dresden... yeah, definitely Dresden. of the west side cities Cologne is pretty nice, Hamburg rocks, too. fuck the west side for the most part.

yeah. and what I said in the beginning. if you need detailed info on pubs/rockholes/food/things to see/and well, pubs, feel free to ask.

I think I want to go to Cologne. It seems interesting and makes sense in the overall plan. We will definitely be in Berlin for a while.

The books I have say you have to go to Munich, but it doesn't seem like the highest priority to me.

I sure have a lot to learn about Germany. And it seems like it will take longer to get from place to place than I anticipated. That's always the way with me.
