i moved into an apartment recently, which means that i (and my roommates) am on my own for food. so i'm wondering, what are some good dependable things to eat for when there's nothing else? we bought a big 10 pound bag of rice, so we have that if all else fails. what are some other things? ideas are appreciated.

Depends on whether you actually want to 'cook', or to just have ready (or nearly ready) to eat stuff to hand.

If you want to be able to cook stuff on a whim, you'll need to make sure you have things like canned tomatoes, canned beans, some basic herbs and spices, frozen veggies, pasta.

Also keep a stock of canned soups. Ones like cream of chicken, creamof celery, cream of mushroom etc are good to use as bases for sauces, or for cooking. (For example, you can make a lovely chicken dish by simply plonking the contents of a can of cream of mushroom soup over some chicken breasts in a baking dish and whacking it in the oven for a half hour.)

I don't know if you mean emergency rations for inclement weather or
just for when you're hungry and don't want to go to the store. Either
way and aside of what people mentioned already:

. a gallon of water

. hot chocolate packets

. marshmallows

. sunflower butter (it's like peanut butter but nicer)

. raw (bagged) and canned refried beans

. granola/energy bars (can be expensive)

. boxed cereal (can also be expensive)

. unpopped popcorn

. pasta (not a big fan of pasta but it's good to have just in case)

. canned soups & veggies--get the good stuff and it won't be gross
& have a non-electric can opener nearby

. box pizza (ewww, I know, but it's like mac & cheese--someone in
every household likes it)

. pancake mix & syrup

Whenever there were bad weather forecasts in the winter, my son
would say, "Sounds like hot chocolate & pancake weather to me!"
because when the weather came and school got cancelled and the
shops often closed, I'd make hot chocolate and then pancakes in all
sorts of shapes. One time, I tried to spell out "No school" with
pancake batter but it came out all merged together and looked
like something that had been digested already. After that, I stuck
to pancake smiley faces.

LOL! I love that. You have the best stories.

How sweet! :o

If I don't tell these stories, I'll forget them in time so I tell them for purely
selfish reasons. (It's always been like that for me--it has nothing to do
with the fact that I'm an oldhead. :))

dried herbs all the way

even canned ass tastes good with a lil extra thyme sprinkled onnit

git some jars of curry paste to go with your big ole bag of rice

or you can be lame and eat it with just butter and pepper the "whitey" way as my asian friends call it

encourage group meals too. if your speciality is spagetti, make it a sunday thing. perhaps one roomate could whip up something for saturday and the other something mid-week. it doesn't matter if the whole house is there, just leave the missing dude(s) a plate in the fridge for when they get in.

back in canada, we used to bbq 3-4 times a week. if anyone in the group was short on cash, they'd just eat for free and contribute when they could. we'd always buy extra, just so no one went hungry. with 3 decent meals throughout the week, you offset you're eating like shit the other 4 days a week.

get a slow cooker and make stews, roasts and chillis. freeze and store the extras in portioned disposable plastic containers. (your own frozen entrees)

do you have a balcony / grill?

also, stay outta the fast-food trap. a $7 ff combo, can buy 5 loaves of bread. that can make 20+ sandwiches. it all adds up and it's a huge waste of cash.

big bottle of soy sauce and a big bottle of sweet chilli sauce, mix those together to go on the rice.

mince is good and cheap (i assume). buy mid-quality mince in bulk, freeze it or cook a large meal. spaghetti bolognese and tacos are my two favourite ways to eat mince.

When it's your turn to do the grocery shopping:

-free-range organic boneless/skinless chicken breast
-pomegranates
-caciocavallo cheese
-capers
-saffron oil
