View Full Version : What do you do that's low- or no-tech?

About the only low-tech things I do are:

. hang laundry on racks with laundry pegs
. bike to the grocery store (I have a bike with a basket)
. pay bills with paper checks

Even my piano is high tech. And sometimes my books are too. :p

I have a bunch of old snowy globes--how I have so many is a
stupid story, but I have a lot now. A couple of winters ago, someone
bought me a plug-in one...when you flick it on, the snow swirls
until you turn it off again. Blech.

Tell me about the low/no tech parts of your lives.

Seriously, that is extremely cool. I am not so good with bikes, not since I fell off one and got slightly mangled.:(

The only things I do low tech are:

-manually wash dishes. For some reason everyone from here to Alpha Centuri has a dishwasher, so I consider that low tech.:D
-I don't use a drill, frig that action. Give me a screwdriver to screw stuff together.

That's all I can come up with.......sadly.

I always got to work on my bike. It's the only way to get out of this village.
And I sometimes like colouring in my doodlebook. it's tres fun. It makes me feel like I'm 5 again.
But apart from that everything I do is pretty high tech.

I forgot about knitting. I knitted bunches of blankets a
couple of years ago when the heating costs soared.
The funny thing is that I taught myself how to knit but
from a CD that I used on my laptop. So I even high-tech'd that. :)

And about my bike with a basket--it's an old-fashioned,
high-handled girl-style bike with a wire basket. I am not
a big bread eater, but I'm always tempted to get a loaf
of french bread and a bunch of flowers and have those
stick out of the top of the basket. :D

That is exactly what I pictured, oddly enough. A huge smile on your face, and a purple helmet. And when you drive around, you wave to the people you see everyday or something. :D

Except for the helmet. :) I do wave and stop and talk.
I love that part of the week.

Aren't you the one with the really great bike?

And I was also thinking that open office hours have become OBE since email has appeared. I mean, you get
a few hundred emails a week from students and they
expect a 10-minute turnaround, yet open office hours
are still required.

That's low tech for sure. And you get exercise too.
I remember seeing a photo of it--amazing looking bike.
It trumps my basket bike. :o

Oh no, I didn't mean it like that. I meant that you're
doing something that requires no fuel, no computers,
no satellites. It's just you and your bike.

Do you carry around an orchestra too? Man, all those instruments and people really are an inconvenience, but the sound is so much more authentic (!)

I was thinking that playing basketball is pretty low-tech. Except I have a separate pair of basketball shoes now. :(

My turntables and mixer are low-tech, right? :(

When we bought the infant activity mat (http://cgi.ebay.com/Newborn-Baby-Infant-Activity-Floor-Gym-A-Must-Have_W0QQitemZ5994773918QQcategoryZ19069QQrdZ1QQcm dZViewItem#ebayphotohosting) , we didn't get the one with lights and noises.

I love those old fashioned bikes. They remind me of Mediterranean villages. People in these places seem to make their transport last forever - scooters. mopeds, bikes and stuff like that. Either that or the tourist boards just leave them around in the street to look quirky :)

As for low tech I try to do everything that way. I don't have a mobile phone or a car. I try to walk or cycle everywhere. I've made some half arsed attempts at gardening but I'm too busy to committ to it right now. I've attempted knitting and crochet but the one I've had most success with is macrame. I've not made anything proper yet with macrame but it's good to know that if required I could.

Right now my spare time is spent learning web design but one day I hope to be able to spend lots of time growing herbs, sprouting seeds, home cooking and learning to live the good life.
