A few years ago, I bought a working, full-sized version of Asteroids for a friend who got through his PhD by playing that game every day during the nastiest part of his research. He'd play for hours on one quarter and then would turn it over to kids who were lined up behind him, wanting to play the rows and rows of free ships that he'd accumulated.

I think I paid something like $50 or $75 for it. :D

$998 per credit hour.

They charge a flat rate after you reach 12 hours though. Evens out to $12,000 per semester, before fees and books.

Pays to be on scholarship.

Melbourne Uni is like $2560 per semester for 2 arts and 2 law subjects. Thats $5120 per year, or $25-30,000 for the arts/law degree. The real cost is somewhere in the vicinity of $50,000-100,000 I think, thank god the government still subsidises alot of tertiary education.

It's shocking when you consider that you need a graduate degree (or two) to work in a related field (or one that'll make it possible to repay the loans easily).

I read about how a lot of college graduates here (U.S.) wind up working jobs that they probably could have done without the degree. I also see that at my work, we don't really even look at applicants that only have an undergraduate degree. (Still, it's a catch-22 because it's hard to even get the interview without a degree on the resume. Even if the degree is completely unrelated to the nature of the job, it's like you've got to have it anyway. Not having a degree is often interpreted incorrectly by employers--they assume that the applicant is unmotivated, unmanageable, or an idiot.)

In Australia you dont really get graduate degrees. You get an undergraduate bachelor degree, or two (ie I'm doing a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of law), and then you get offered a place in the honours program (which doesnt really require extra subjects or anything, just good grades) if you are good enough, then you get offered a place in the masters/graduate programs I think, then doctorate. However it takes 5 years to get the two undergraduate degrees, then you have to do articles and a few other things that take another year in order to be able to qualify for the bar. So it takes 6 years before you can practice as a lawyer (however you can act as both a barrister and solicitor). I dunno its a confusing system, especially for a person like me who doesnt really want to be a lawyer anyway.

...this is tangetial to my point about using correct grammar, etc. It's like -- if you dress up enough (grammar, clothes, degrees), people assume you have skills you may or may not have.

Judging a book by its frosting, etc.
