View Full Version : If it's not tuition, it's books

I've been trying to find the cheapest possible places to order my books, and it's driving me crazy. It'd be so much easier if they added in shipping when they give you the estimate for each book, rather than when you check out and give you the TOTAL shipping (instead of per item).
It'd be so much easier if I had one book per class, maybe even as many as 3-4. But no. For my classes, I have one book for 4 of my classes, and I have TEN BOOKS for my other two classes. So that's a total of 24 freakin' books! What the hell is the deal with these goddamn professors? Is it really necessary for 10 books for one class? They're decent-sized books too. They can't possibly expect for me to read every page of all those books, so they should have just made a xerox packet of whatever they wanted us to read and sold THAT.
I have the 10 books for Ethnicity and Immigration in America, and then another 10 for Nazi Germany. And it's goddamn expensive.
Send me money pls :(

Book on Nazi Germany tend to be long.
So do you crazy kids not have bookstores at school anymore? I suppose it's cheaper online.

Wouldn't Ebay be a good place for this? Or Half.com? Or something?
I seem to remember buying used books from the bookstore. Of course, they were in stone tablet.

Yeah, the bookstores gouge like no other. For example:
Yugoslavia as History: New: $33. Used: $24.75. Amazon: $4.95.
That's an easy decision, because $4.95 plus shipping will still be less than what the bookstore charges as used.
But then there's this:
Hitler 1936-1945: New: $21.95. Used: $16.50. Amazon: $14.90.
That's when I have to figure out the shipping per item, and which would be cheaper in the long run. And more so, I need to find out if the bookstore even has it, or if they're sold out already. There's 60 other people in the class, so I'm not sure if they'd stock that many books.
ARGH my head's gonna essplode

Yeah, that's how they did it when I was a lass. :p
It used to be bad if you bought your books from someplace else because you might buy a different edition, but I suppose that was more of a problem for me because I had math/logic/econ/finance based classes where you wanted to follow along when the professor did problems on the board. I suppose there isn't a board anymore either. Jesus Christ.

Yeah, I've been looking there too. But I still don't know if books (with shipping) would be cheaper than going to the bookstore, or finding it on Amazon, or through Bookholders.com. And to figure out and compare all prices, with and without shipping, is impossirous. :(

I'm starting to see why some of my friends sold their old law books over the internet now. Those suckers were expensive.
I was kind of jealous about your classes because I'm studying that stuff on my own, but those first two book examples sound lame. :(

Those sound like interesting reading.
I've been meaning to read these, but I OD'd on Nazi Germany:
Hitler '36-'45 Nemesis
Hitler '89-'36 Hubris
Divided Memory is awesome. The East German version of history is hilarious.

Ooh, art major, huh? Yeah, my friend pays out the wazoo for all her art stuff, because they require nothing but the best for her portraits/paintings/photos/whatever the hell else she's doing.

There are a few problems with half.com or ebay.
. Sometimes the texts, when new, come with required software. If you get the books used without benefit of examining them and the software first, you don't know what you're getting.
. Sometimes there are several editions to a book and those online sellers aren't always accurate in their descriptions of what they're selling. My son's friend bought a text from ebay and it wound up being the wrong edition.
. Some schools don't release the required books list until late July. Which doesn't leave much time to shop, find the best price, and then have the books shipped in time for when classes start.
My son wound up buying this term's books at the campus bookstore. He got 2 of them used. $450 for 5 books. (The bookstore does buy them back at the end of the semester, but they do that at obscenely low prices--obscenely low relative to what they'll turn around and sell them for used in the next term.)

Art supplies could be the killer though.
yeah. I've spent well over $300 on my sculpture class thus far, and for a final project, we have to make a stupid diorama (sp) which requires big blocks of wood and supplies for the set, and guess who gets to pay for it!

I wanted to bitch my teacher out for having all these projects that require tons of money.

^nice.
And yeah... I've paid so much money for that class. And she's the kind of teacher that will only give you an A if you put in extra work...
which basically means that the only way to get the clay she requires to be nice, smooth, and clean is to buy MORE supplies that DID NOT come with the kit that we ALREADY had to buy.
