I slammed him a lot but I'll bet he is remembered as one of the better presidents. I didn't appreciate how good we had it during his administration. Those of us who laughed at him should apologize.

Jimmy Carter is another underrated guy. Especially given all of the human rights issues and public service things he's dedicated his life to since.

While I would agree that things were certainly better under Clinton, there is still the unaccountability.

Carter never had a chance. He was brought down from the inside.

I <3 Jimmy Carter! (y)

I like Clinton, but he could have done better. Nevertheless, I'd still love to see him in office.

And I actually still like Al Gore! :o

i don't hold american(or any nation's) president in very high regards, but it seems he was a cool guy and if anyone can do business with Jean Chretien and become friends with him, then he's ok by me.

he at least seemed more presidential than either bush.

gmsisko, Clinton wasn't a bit responsible for 9/11. I misled you. I'm sorry for gossipping about Clinton, wrongly. I refuse to gossip against Bush from this day forward either.

Lets see....... Enron, World Com and others cooked the books during Clinton's term.(Made Clintax look good) What the fuck are you talking about?
Every word you type makes you look even dumber.
Clinton tried to get legislation passed in 1998 that would have made the accounting tricks that Enron, World Com, etc pulled illegal.
The Republican Congress voted it down.

Clinton was OK, but compared to the two Bushes, he's a goddamn SAINT!

He was also brought down ("down" hahaha) from the inside. Don't tell me the whole Monica Lewinski thing wasn't a setup.

I rate Carter above Clinton and Kennedy. He is an awesome dude.

I despise Reagan more than either Bush. His administration did some HORRIBLE things in the "war on communism". There's always a war. War on drugs, war on terror, war on poverty, etc.

When will there be a war on war?

Hmmm... maybe when they elect Wilco as President?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

That he went to the tsunami zone and now to the Gulf Coast says a lot about Clinton's character.

I always liked Clinton. I never cared much either way about the sex scandal.

And I liked Carter too, but I didn't know much about him at the time other than the fact that my parents were thrilled that he was elected. I've learned more about him since then--not a huge amount but enough. He has a good heart and kind intentions. I'll take that any day.

so how many of you guys praising carter were alive in the 70s and have memories of the 70s?

or are you basing this on his current work?

The Dems were the majority in Congress during that time. Please post some type of proof.
Time for you to learn the First Rule of Holes (when you're in one, stop digging).
Every statement you make just proves how out of touch you are.
It would be a total waste of my time to provide proof to a moron.
I'll give you a clue though, would the senate have voted to impeach Clinton if the Dems were in the majority?
I know exactly what your answer will be, the hole gets deeper...

He was certainly a lot better in office than either Nixon or Reagan. Sure, in office, things were tough, but he was inherited the burdens left by Ford and Nixon.

Like it or not, that man has a heart of gold.

Carter served in a difficult time, trying to pick up the massive deficit and public division left by the Vietnam war.
Who ever comes after bush will will be faced by the same thing.
While serving as president Carter, educated as a nuclear engineer, actually went into the control room of Three Mile Island when it was melting down to try and help contain it.
I have no doubts bush would have run the other way even if he was the only person on earth who could have solved the problem.

:D

I was thinking today that when there were gas shortages in the 70s, everyone suddenly got interested in foreign cars. I'd never heard of a Honda or a Toyota, and suddenly all sorts of people were paying more money than list price to get their hands on those beauties. My dad stuck with his Ford LTD, which was so big I could lie down in the backseat and touch the door with only my tippietoes.

I agree. Carter is a great man, and certainly the best ex-president I can think of. But he was a horseshit president all around. Frankly, if I had been able to vote in 76 I'd have voted for Ford.

Carter had some really bad luck. But he also was a horrible politician. And a president needs to be a good politician. Tip O'Neill should have helped him, but Carter refused to play games. I know it looks great on West Wing when the president takes a stand on principle, but it's not that effective in real life. Carter really didn't accomplish most of what he wanted, and that's probably the best benchmark. He's a good example of why the smartest guy doesn't make the best president.

I love that Carter took a stand for human rights. But it's difficult for me to know whether it helped or hurt the US in the short or long run. It certainly wasn't what the people of the US wanted him to be focusing on (anymore than those of us who elected Clinton wanted his first issue to be gays in the military). Yeah, those things weren't their faults, but you have to know how to play the game if you're going to hold the biggest office.

I hate Reagan with a passion that I cannot begin to explain. But he was probably a good president. He certainly accomplished his goals. Nixon was a great president (if you can forget about him being a criminal and having an administration run by criminals).

I'd like to hear from Carter supporters what he accomplished, rather than how great a person he was/is.

My dad did too. We only had one car for 5 of us, so it had to be a bit of a boat.

In Zurich, there were Smart Cars (http://www.smart.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/mpc-uk-content-Site/-/-/-/SVCPresentationPipeline-Start?Page=issite://mpc-uk-Site/mpc-uk.com/RootFolder/smart/home.page) all over the place and they're only about 8 or 9 of my feet long. I don't think you can take them on the highway and they don't go very fast. But they are so so cute.

So adorable!

I remember the first time I went to Italy in 1979 or 1980 and I saw all the tiny cars. It was like bumper cars at an amusement park.

My dad hated all foreign cars until he retired and became a VW junkie.

^^^I love those amusement park cars too. The last time I bought a car, 1994, it was harder to find smaller cars that had 4 doors. The car I have, a Toyota civic, is mid-sized and that's why I don't drive it too often.

I'd love to have a tiny car. My dad frets, though, because he thinks that they're not safe in collisions. He's driven with me before and he says that he has reason to be concerned. :o

I remember the gas lines in the 70s too and only being allowed to get gas on certain days--it was tied in with the numbers on your license plate.

I remember the gas lines in the 70s too and only being allowed to get gas on certain days--it was tied in with the numbers on your license plate.
I remember the gas lines. My two cousins and I used to go to the Dunkin Donuts first thing in the morning, buy a few dozen and all the cups of coffee we could carry, then walk down to the gas station and sell them to people waiting in line. After about three days the manager at the Dunkin Donuts got wise to what we were doing and told us he wasn't going to sell stuff to us anymore. My cousin (the shrewdest, most manipulative 10 year old you could ever hope to meet) starts crying and says "But we need the money cuz momma says we can't count on no one to help us since dad died and the factory don't wanna pay on the insurance". And some other customer lady there was like "For christ's sake man, let the kids sell the damn donuts, what do you care, you're making your money anyway!"

ssssscore!
