View Full Version : New Orleans Will RUIN Bush

Too much money thrown about freely in Iraq
Now a whole city is gone because not enough loot went into those walls and levies.
Helicopters shrink wrapped and stacks of cash spent to practically FedEx a war to Iraq.
Now UNIMAGINABLE Money HAS to be spent to recreate this city
and where will it come from?

I think Mr. Bush is in a bit of a pinch.

Another nail in the coffin.

Even God has shown His disapproval of the War in Iraq and Bush's disdain for the Elements. The Christian Right will not support him in future.

No, Q. I'm not saying that Global Warming causes Hurricanes, I'm saying that Bush's attitude to the Climate is one of the reasons why the money was not spent on preparing for this disaster. It was spent on protecting oil fields from terrorists. Climatic events take a big back seat to oil reserves in this guy's list.

He's got his priorities totally back to front. Now he will pay.

It's a pity so many people had to die, both in Iraq and the US, because of this man and his friends. Lets hope he goes before more people lose their lives.

If this doesn't destroy him, then nothing (NOTHING) will.

Then I think that denial is strong with some people--they might find crazy ways to deny Bush's failure and to boost him to hero status. It depends on how this gets spun and whether he massages and manages it in the right way, whether he can contain the smirk. Sometimes people just want to hear the lockerroom pep talk ("We're with ya, my friends and help is on the way, rest assured <smirk>") instead of pressuring him to give actionable plans.

(I've had friends who have had huge problems in their lives and sometimes, there's nothing to do but to wait for them to hit their own personal rock bottom so that they can start to recover. Something happens and you think that this is it--this is the thing that'll knock desperate sense into them. But it doesn't. Because they're blinded, they're in denial, and they want to believe the best the impossible about themselves. The very same thing could happen with GW and this tragedy--people could well just praise him over how he handles this if it's spun in the right way. You just never know.

I'll be very interested to watch how the conservative right spins all of this. I wonder what the Christian Coalition will have to say about dead bodies rotting in the streets and people dying not from the initial impact of the storm, but because recovery efforts were so stalled and poorly managed.

Watching the footage of the people stuck at the convention center I feel two conflicting emotions. One is the absolute joy at how angry the people there are. They are pissed off and you can just feel that there is a change in the air.

But on the other hand my heart is absolutely breaking for the people that are clearly dying. People with pre-existing medical problems and no medication available, small children and elderly people who clearly won't make it much longer in the heat with no water. Fuck, where is the help that they so desperately need?

enree erzweglle

^^^I know. I felt the same way--get and stay angry, people.

It's easier to say that, though. They'yre exhausted and tired and scared and it's probably hard to feel anger for a lot of them. They're probably still shocky after all of this. I'd much rather see anger in them than defeat. It is so, so hard to watch people who feel desperate and destitute, like there is nothing left for them. You can see it in their eyes and I just cry when I see that.

I saw a news story last night about a neo-natal unit that's struggling to stay open. The staff stayed through the storm and the aftermath (they're still there) to keep these babies alive. If they have to, they'll hand-crank the life-support for them. And it's blazing hot in the buildings (which is good for the babies but very hard for them). The personnel are exhausted--some were on the verge of tears but there was a kind of optimism and hope there too. They've left their own kids in the care of other people to help these kids. When I hear things like that, it's like I turn into a mushball...so many conflicting emotions watching these news stories. :( Other than giving money to them, what can we do? It's like I want to say, hey, greyhound busses, bring them here! I can take at least 10 people.

I believe it was Charity Hospital (although I'm sure all the hospitals in the area have had the same problem) lost all power and have had to use the hand held oxygen pumps to keep the people on ventilators alive. They get tired after doing that for five minutes most of the time, and they can't stop or else these people wil definately die as opposed to probably. :(

It's been common knowledge that if New Olreans ever got hit, these are the kinds of things that would happen. There must have been all kinds of plans as to how everyone would respond to this emeregency, fix levees, get people out, and get supplies in. What the fuck happened?

What Katrina did to New Orleans and levees was not a surprise.

you know, govt and its bureaucracy is so fu'd, no matter who was president, bush, clinton, kerry, nixon, walt disney and his imagineers, we would still be seeing this bs go on

and it totally exposes our weakness to terrorists, we harass 90 year old women at airport security lines, but if this had been a bomb instead of a hurricane, the equivalent would be standing around with your thumb up you ass

now, if i were president, first thing i would do is declare marshall law and shoot to kill looters stealing NON food items....

Is he planning to air drops that stuff? (I missed seeing that news conference.) Damn, air drop something to those people if you can't get busses and army trucks in there. (Although you MUST be able to get some trucks in because they could get busses out yesterday and Wednesday. I'd love to see a map that shows which highways are no longer in operation. That would help me to understand why I'm not seeing hundreds of busses lined up to get those people out.)

I was only watching out of the corner of my eye, but it looked like he flew in on his helicopter with some Homeland Security official or something (who seemed to just be there to stand next to him), spoke for approximately five minutes, and got back in his chopper and flew off.

I've got a pretty right-wing friend who has consistently supported and praised GW. She's seething over all of this. I just finished a 30-minute phone call with her and basically the entire time, she was ranting about him and why it's taken him so long to do anything on a big scale. Why those people don't at least know when relief is coming. She's pissed, big time, at him. And she's seeing the smirk. She could never see that before...she saw his "smile" as showing compassion and composure, but she sees it as a smirk today.

I think they've gotten to the point were they just don't care. They probably think they're going to die there, might as well stick it to the man beforehand.

Of course, that's just speculation on my part. And the people they're screwing were already screwed, because much of the merchandise being stolen was probably already damaged anyway. But when you're poor, uneducated, desperated, pissed off, and scared you'll probably do some stupid shit.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/nation/20050902-9999-1n2funds.html

A key flood-control project in southeastern Louisiana has seen its federal funding steadily dwindle, from $69 million in 2001 to $32.2 million in 2005, according to congressional offices and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Bush requested $10.5 million for the project for 2006, while the Corps said $62.5 million was required.

Funding for hurricane protection, including levee improvements and pumping stations, went from $10 million in 2001 to $5.7 million this year. Bush proposed $3 million for 2006.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported last year that work was virtually halted on one major hurricane levee project for the first time in 37 years. At the time, a local official blamed a shift in resources to Iraq and counterterrorism efforts.

How is it possible that in a country which is always blowing its horn about how advanced it is, that people are starving to death? Is this Somalia? No, it is George Bush's United States of America.

How is it possible that young children are dying of thirst. Is this Mali? No, it is George Bush's United States of America.

We've got a lot of rebuilding to do. First, we're going to save lives and stabilize the situation. And then we're going to help these communities rebuild. The good news is -- and it's hard for some to see it now -- that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house -- he's lost his entire house -- there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch. (Laughter.)

Did he say what the design standard was supposed to be now? when it was designed?

Every single bit of infrastructure you depend on was designed this way. It's the only way it can be done. Every road, bridge, building, pipe, and lake. The government can't protect its citizens from every possible natural disaster. They always weigh the costs and risks of various scenarios.

Citizens don't want to pay what it costs for a higher level or protection on new projects, muchless replace every old bridge, etc.

I think about this stuff all the time and wonder what would happen if things failed.

Well, we can't fund levees AND bring freedom to Iraq AND cut taxes. Something had to give.

So I wonder what the cost would have been for better flood control vs. the cost of evacuation, cleanup, and rebuilding. I'm thinking that even if you don't factor in all the dead people, someone messed up the cost/benefit analysis.

But don't worry, I'm sure the rest of our infrastructure has been fully funded.

even on this message board there are still quite a few retards that stand by bush. (like, OMG, how could that man do any wrong? it's the poor people's fault, they don't deserve help)
looking at the America from the outside, i don't think we have the same optimism about the future of the US that you do.
i think in many ways, things will remain unchanged.

Yeah! Here's another idea: Shoot all black people, in case they are looters and all Arabic people in case they are terrorists (lb)

pretty much was going to be my response.

Hmm, we could also take the time out to use binoculars, just to be SURE they aren't looting food (whether they be black, white, or any other race). And if they are, SHOOT EM DOWN! I mean, we just CANNOT let them take anything else, oh no no, not at all. They are better when they are dead.

By the way, in regards to the idea of shooting looters... does that mean you think anyone who steals anything ever should be shot dead too? because really, that is the logic behind the original statement.

As far as those who are shooting at rescue crews, I find it awful. I don't know what could be going through their minds, but trying to protect the victims that are being rescued, as well as the people rescuing them is important. It's amazing to me that it's even an issue though.

I have to agree with cos on all her points, too.
