My Nazi Germany professor sent this email to me and my fellow classmates, he says it falls under the category of "thinking in the long-term" and knowing when to listen to warnings when they're presented.

Katrina could have been prevented. (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/02/opinion/02fischetti.html?ex=1126324800&en=ef6b08208a520a45&ei=5070&emc=eta1)

I have a feeling that I'm really going to like him and his class. He's so passionate about his beliefs, and really wants to make a difference in the world.

Yea. It could have been prevented and any of the last 10 presidents could/should have acted on the levee system. As far as P.S.-liberal hogwash.

Anyone who can read can see it says "editorial" meaning "opinion".

Thousands of people still need to be rescued from imminent peril. Public health threats must be controlled in New Orleans and throughout southern Mississippi. Drivers must be given confidence that gasoline will be available, and profiteering must be brought under control at a moment when television has been showing long lines at some pumps and spot prices approaching $4 a gallon have been reported.

Though I can see why that^ is considered "hogwash".

Little piggies are cute. But this is way off of topic.

I think we can all agree that everyone was not prepared for Katrina, but everyone should have been. Fact is no one was and now people will learn from the mistakes. I remember when Juan smoked Halifax and there was crap everywhere. Entire computer systems were down and people had no clue how to deal with not being able to get food and other goods. Lesson learned there, hopefully NO will learn too. It is horrible to read about all the destruction and mayham going on right now in the South...

That's the thing though; I think they'll learn a lesson in New Orleans, but a lot of other places are still vulnerable and probably will think they're safe from hurricanes in the future too.

My professor of Nazi history was also telling us of how he went down to the Outer Banks of NC last week, and was speaking with a contractor down there. He asked what kind of hurricanes the houses on the beaches were built to stand up against, and he replied "Class three." Just like New Orleans, only protected against class three. Class three has nothing on a class 5, and the developers are thinking in the short-term, they want to save money and time and only protect against what has happened in the past, or what is not "likely" to happen in the future. Just as it's "unlikely" for a class five to hit North Carolina, it was just as "unlikely" for a class five to hit New Orleans.

This episode of destruction should be a lesson for the entire east coast to re-think its hurricane routes, and building techniques. I really hope they do consider fortifying in the future, but I doubt they'll want to spend the time, cash, and resources doing so.

Don't know if it's just an excuse but the Corps of Engineers is saying that the sections of levy that failed were in good condition and that there were no plans to refurbish them.
