View Full Version : Sample from B-boys Makin' With the Freak-Freak?

In this song there's a sample between two of the verses where a (black?) guy says something like "If it's going to be that kind of party, I'm gonna stick my dick into mashed potatoes" and then some people laugh. Who's that guy and where's that sample taken from?

C'mon people... I need your help.

Oh, this is an age-old question. Someone needs to go record digging and figure this out.

Why does he have to be black?!

Nope. Unfortunately no one has been able to definitively come up with it.

Nope. Unfortunately no one has been able to definitively come up with it.okay maybe you missed out then. this one guy came in from out of nowhere and answered it as far as i know. though he could have been wrong he said he had the record at home and was positive about it. but like i said, everyone seems to have forgotten about it anyway so i guess it's back to zero again.

I've followed every mashed potatos thread closely. No one has been able to come up with it for sure. Even Yauch chimed in on it but hasn't really given us enough to find it.

Maybe we wouldn't be back to zero if it wasn't for all of those thread purges

What's the point of tracking down a sample that's already been used? When I go digging I look for shit that hasn't already been jacked.

It's not about reusing the sample. We just want to know where it's from, that's all.

I've been hunting it down on the net for the past hour... Found this.I used to have a home-dubbed cassette with the routine that produced that "Mashed potatoes" line, and I can't for the life of me remember who it was. The tape had Moms Mabley on the other side of it.Dunno if it helps, but I have'nt seen Moms Mabley mentioned in any of the "Potato" threads.

It's just from some other guy online talking about it.

They do sample Moms Mabley on Sure Shot though, so it's a good possibility, I guess.

Have'nt found anything cross-referenced with the "Montel" MCA told us though.

Thanks BCK.

Does anyone know anything about Moms Mabley. Did she have guest comedians on her comedy albums? The voice on the mashed potatos sample is definitely a male voice....unless Moms used to be a Dads. :D

...mainly, the way that woman builds to her shriek/laugh tells me this was something spontaneous. It could've been an improvised line in a movie, but it sounds like it was recorded at a party or a REALLY small club.

Pigmeat Markham's voice is much deeper, so it's probably not him....

I wonder if it's Blowfly. Stuff like the samples from the Oldies album make it sound like that kind of atmosphere. But he seemed to do all songs. But maybe there was between-song patter in the studio. And it sounds like it could maybe be that voice...

Blowfly is the X-rated alter ego of Clarence Reid, a songwriter/producer who had quite a bit of success under his own name in the '70s, writing and producing hits for Gwen MacRae, KC & the Sunshine Band, Betty Wright, and others while on the staff at the preeminent Florida disco label of the era, TK Records. It's as Blowfly that Reid is best remembered in certain circles, though. The Redd Foxx of the Southern soul circuit, Blowfly specializes in dirty parodies of current soul and pop hits; his over two dozen albums, almost all of them recorded live in the studio with the ambience of a liquor-fueled all-night party, are an entertaining mixture of filth and wit that's neither too disgusting to be funny nor too refined to be dirty.

Blowfly sound samples. (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE57F18D249A97320C5903C40CCB269A329D94E FB87126E495AD1A926499E0C74E80BA695C9AEFB7DAB7BAFFF 28E85905D7C2E457FACC0640&sql=11:06vsa93gb230~T2)

Again, most of these are songs, but the sound is pretty right. I'm wondering if between-song patter is where that came from.

Thanks for doing some diggin' a-z. Every few months the subject surfaces. People always claim the same 3 or 4 comedians...but no one has ever been able to offer up the sample in its entirety.

...Blowfly has about a dozen records released in the pre-Ill Communication era. I'd really hate to have buy, let alone slog through all those.

I emailed Mario Caldato to ask him about it, and here's what he had to say:

"Any idea where the "mashed potatoes" sample that the Beastie Boys used in
Ill Communication comes from?"

"SORRY BUT ADROCK HAD THE RECORD, I DON’T REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS, SOME OLD BLACK COMEDY RECORD.

PEACE"

I know that doesn't help, but now we know who may be the only person who can answer the question.
