England is named after the Angles, one of several Germanic tribes who settled the country in the 5th and 6th centuries.

You learn something new everyday eh? :)

Isn't it derived from the word Angle as in Anglo/Saxon?

The Angles got the overall name of the land, while within it there were regions of East Saxony (Essex), South Saxony (Sussex), and West Saxony (Wessex).

Note the absence of North Saxony; they all seem to have died out early on. How curious!
