As authorities struggled to keep order, police shot eight people carrying guns on the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River, Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley. Five or six were killed, Riley said, adding that he had no other details.
Air and boat crews searched flooded neighborhoods for survivors, and federal officials urged those still left in New Orleans to leave for their own safety.

Report: Police shoot gunmen
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/04/ka...pact/index.html
Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on contractors crossing a bridge to make levee repairs, The Associated Press reported.
Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley told AP that police shot at eight people who had guns, killing five or six.
The Army Corps of Engineers told AP that 14 contractors escorted by police were fired upon while crossing the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.
Corps spokesman John Hall told AP the contractors were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to help fix a breech in the 17th Street Canal.
Initial AP reports had wrongly indicated that the contractors themselves were shot by police; no other details were immediately available.

it was funny cause at first on CNN the headline was that the police had shot army corps engineers, but then 5 minutes later it changed to say that they actually shot people who shot at the engineers.
Good ol AP.

Well I don't think you can heap a lot of scorn on AP in this instance. This is what happens with breaking news - the situation is unclear, and reporting agencies can only report what they have as they have it. Watching it unfold on the BBC last night, it was literally less than 5 minutes before the stiuation was clarified, which is actually pretty good.
Compare it to a situation like a few months ago in the London bombings, where for over an hour we were hearing that there had been as many as six busses bombed, when in fact there was one. In chaotic circumstances, where the reporting is being done before the dust settles, shit happens - gets left out or misstated.

I'm pretty sure they could have waited the 5 minutes to clarify the story instead of jumping the gun to make sure they had the scoop. I totally blame them. Its a I need it now society, sure, but integrity is another thing. It doesn't affect me negatively if I have to wait 5 minutes for them to get the story straight. Why rush it out the wire?
