it would be a bummer if they had to cancel the whole thing cos melbourne cant.

The article also reveals that the Red Hot Chili Peppers had been slated in for the tour, but have pulled out due to delays to the release date of their new album.

yeah i had a feeling that might've happened.

Its more like a mixture falls and homebake. It goes for 3 days. They announced the lineup on triple j this arvo supposedly. They usually get the best Aussie acts (ie spiderbait, dallas crane, rocket science, hilltop hoods etc.), and then throw in one or two international acts per year ie Sage Francis, Young Heart Attack, The Donnas, Sleater-Kinney, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The D4 and Cat Power.

This year the avalanches will probably play as a part of their farewell tour (y)

The situation with Melbourne is a mess at the moment. They're seeking permission to hold it in Carlton at Princess Gardens...but personally whether they get that or not I don't see how they could make it work out.

Meredith is the best festival ever. Better than BDO, Livid, Splendour in the Grass etc put together. Small crowds, awesome bands, the Mullwaverly dudes, one stage so you don't miss anything, good cheap food.

I'd gone to every one until I'd left Melbourne. It was only two days then. Just sitting around getting nicely toasted.....ah, the memories.

I remember you talking to me about it last year before I went. I didnt think it could be possible to be as good as you hyped it, but it seriously was (y) This year we are gonna actually plan ahead and bring some food and shit, last time we made an awesome decision to bring some sweet ass directors chairs and a card table and although we were a fair way away from the stage, we camped with the band the ground components who have headlined friday night 2 years in a row pretty much. That was cool, especially when it was pissing down raining about 20-30 of us crammed inside their giant army style tent and started having singalongs with their acoustic guitar of old rolling stones and beatles songs. It was fucken awesome. And rocket science, dallas crane, the redsunband, wolf & cub...man they were so awesome. And the light show combined with what they had playing on the screens either side of the stage made everything psychadelic and trippy.

I remember hearing on tour this year that they can't because of the Australian Open and Commonwealth Games committments which rule out this and other venues. Something like that.

They got cleanrance to do it at the Princess Gardens today though - so I guess that'll be the spot.

I hate crowds, and I hated the Big Day Out.

But if you're lucky, some great Music might make it worthwhile for you.

But it didn't for me.

But I saw System and the B-Boys, and I quite like them.

But I took a wee beside some girl taking a wee, and we smoked a fattie.

But I told her I'd be back.

Still, my favorite act at BDO was Le Tigre on a side stage. I also liked Atmosphere in the hot house or whatever it was called. That could work. But if they put lovely S-K on one of the big stages. :(

I dunno what you guys are so pissed off about. The White stripes, The Mars volta, Magic Dirt and Wolf & Cub all put on great stage shows from my experience, and the rest are pretty decent acts. I agree that its a backflip from what they did last year with some of the heavier acts, and there is a total lack of a decent hip hop or electronic act, but as far as triple j style rock goes they've pretty much picked out 4 of the most popular (the White stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Kings of Leon, The Mars volta), and thrown in a classic (Iggy and the Stooges). If they announce a decent dance/electronic act are playing (my money is on sonic animation) then it will be set. Otherwise the avalanches for 3 hours @ meredith at like 3am in the morning are going to have to do for me at least :D (y)

By the way, meredith's second announcement of acts was shithouse (n)

Theres only two bands on that list I like: The Mars Volta and Magic Dirt - and I saw the Dirt last weekend in Byron for $15. Theres no way on Gods green earth that i'm going to pay $120-odd bucks to see two bands. I've seen Iggy before and it was a disappointment, even though I like the stooges.

But really - The white stripes, franz fucking ferdinand and the kings of leon. The lineup is really weak in my opinion.

Rancid_Beasties

Still, I'm paying a similar amount for meredith, and yet theres only two bands I really wanna see compared to about 6 at bdo so far. I know theres the whole camping and atmosphere thing but meredith's lineup this year is shite compared to last year.

i seem to be the only one thats even remotely happy with the line up  i love the white stripes, kings of leon and franz.... and gerling! yay! i missed mars volta last time they were out cos they were on the same time as the strokes, so i'll definately catch them this time round.

and the way ticket scalping is going, im buying my tix right away, cos they'll sell out quickly like homebake and splendour

nah kezz i'm happy so far, its just that none of those bands are bands that i have been hanging to see.

i'm scared the white stripes will disappoint.
i'm a little bored of franz
iggy should rock though

i dont know the mars volta's stuff but everyone i know with good taste likes them so i'll be checking them out.

gerling i have seen before - i hope this time i dont have to see them in the heat of the day again but i suppose i will.

2 many dj's will play an awesome set, i know this.

it's all alternative shit

as rancid said, there's nothing heavy, no decent electronic acts, and no hip hop. sorry but i just cant stand all that type of shit

no one short of tool is gonna make me go this year, or some really really good dj or act to headline the boiler room coz i cant see the main stage getting any better. Daft Punk would be wicked if they could get them. or some massive UK electronic act. as long as it's not basement jaxx again, just coz i've seen them so many times

well did anyone end up going??

i had a really good day. the crowd was smaller and the different setup (having the 2 smaller stages separate, boiler room outside) made getting around and seeing acts so much easier. so so much better than last year.

got there at 3, saw wolfmother, they're alright, pretty good live. had a decent spot so stayed there for hilltop hoods who were quality as usual.

had some free time then so went and saw a little bit of M.I.A. (would have liked to have stayed around but had to meet people), go team, the avenues (beatles cover (y) ) and living end ( :( )

went to get some dinner and heard kamahl singing so went into lillyworld and watched him. kamahl rules :inlove: crowd went off to "still call australia home".

saw a few minutes of franz but i find them a bit middle of the road so i just moved around a bit, went to the silent disco. easily one of my favourite parts of the day, dancing on a dodgem car floor, listening to good breaks through headphones. loved the silent disco.

iggy and the stooges were alright, iggys cool but i don't know any of the songs and wasn't in the crowd so went to cog, got stuck listening to their soundcheck :( and 2 songs before going to sonicamination who ruled! so glad i got to see their last show. highlight of the day was probably when they played didley squat and the crowd was clapping and singing and the water was raining down on us. also the last song they played, theophilus thistler, the people in suits came out and the crowd was so into it. awesome :) sonicanimation are so funny.

managed to get to see the end of the white stripes, could see and hear seven nation army so i was happy. went back to the boiler room (not so much a room) for 2 many dj's who were so fucking good. wanna see them again so bad.

only bad part was getting burnt with a cigarette (fucking smokers  )

oh some ultra crappy photos....

02-06-2006, 09:00 PM
sonicanimation and 2 many dj's

2 many dj's aren't just a boring dj set, lots of chopping, changing of songs. play lots of older stuff, some punk, pop, early 90s, rock, hip hop, anything. they're awesome.

Rancid_Beasties
02-07-2006, 05:52 AM
The boiler room was better than it has ever been in my opinion. It was a shame I missed soulwax, but I love kings of leon so I saw them. Apparently they were brilliant, as was dj james murphy.

Kid Kenobi was pretty cool, as was sonic animation. But 2manydjs were just a cut above in the boiler room.

Anyway I saw the following acts:

Airbourne (they were better at meredith), Presets (Fucking good), Faker (saw one song, hurricane ;) meh), the subways (also saw them at the kings of leon sideshow), Gerling, Magic Dirt, Cut Copy (Awesome), Wolfmother, Hilltop Hoods (both better at meredith previous years), Kings of leon, Living end, Franz, 1 iggy pop song, Kid Kenobi, 2 white stripes songs, and all of sonic animation and 2manydjs.

I think big day out was better this year than last. Mainly because slipknot and powderfinger didnt play.

er, did either of you go?
no?
well then how can you judge?

rancid and i went to last years and this years and we're both saying its better.

maybe the acts aren't to your taste, but they are to many other people's taste. i know heaps of people who were "like white stripes and franz ferdinand - best line up ever!" i didn't agree myself, i wasn't overly excited at the thought of any of the acts myself but i still went and had seriously one of my best big day outs ever.

for me part of this was because it was organised so much better, so that i could move around and see a little bit of every act i wanted to see. and the ones i saw - on the whole - were quality.

i didn't really know what to expect from 2 many dj's but i was wowed.

nope, i went from freestylers to beastie boys, but didn't have the energy to work my way past the barrier into the crowd, so i stood towards the back. unfortunately it was windy that night and the sound didn't travel well and i froze to death, so i went back a bit and sat against a wall so i wasn't so cold. got up when they played no sleep till brooklyn. what i could hear of it anyway :(

I dont wanna be harsh, but the beasties performance at melbourne bdo was average. Their sideshow was one of the best live performances i've ever seen, but their bdo performance wasnt anywhere near as good. So for me, an average beasties performance is equalled by an awesome 2manydjs set. The rest of last years lineup, besides the beastie boys, was pretty weak. I mean you had like 2 kickass bands (the hives and system of a down), a few good bands (chemical bros, le tigre, atmosphere, the streets) and the rest were either crap or average. Same oz acts this year as last year pretty much.

I can see why you would hate this years lineup, it was very very thin on hip hop, especially compared to last year.
