I've been watching a lot of Miami Ink on TLC and it always gets me thinking about tattoos. How do you all feel about them? Do you have one? If so, do you regret it or do you love it? Did you become addicted like so many people do? If you don't have one, do you ever consider getting one?

I have a small tattoo on my upper back right between my shoulder blades. It was sort of a stupid thing that I did one night when I was 18 and bored. It isn't representative of me in any way and has pretty much no meaning, and it didn't really turn out the way I wanted it to. I've been hanging out with a bunch of dudes who own a tattoo parlor and I've been talking to them about getting it covered up with something else that has more personal significance to me. I love tattoos if they're well done and actually have a story behind them which is why I'm not too crazy about mine. I don't regret it necessarily because I enjoy the tattooing process, but I wish I had waited until I had a better idea of what I wanted out of something so permanent. I probably should've researched about reputable tattoo artists in the area before I got it done, too.

So what is your tattoo of?

I don't think I'd get one, because I don't like needles/can't think of anything I'd like when I'm 70.

It's a starburst sun type deal. Very creative, I know.

It's better than a nekkid chick.

What are you thinking of replacing it with?

Something out of a Rene Magritte painting.

If I were to get one, I'd get a small crescent moon on my shoulder/back, with a few stars around it. My name means "Goddess of the Moon" in Roman mythology, so it'd have significance.

i've got a few. my best friend has been tattooing for 8 years. most of my friends have nice tats and / or full sleeves. i like tattoos a lot, but often i draw a blank when i get the urge. i'd like a few more, but i'll have to wait for inspiration to strike. i don't think i'd ever go below the t-shirt line, just in case.

i find most tattoos to be rather trashy. especially when chicks get them on the small of their backs.

I have a tattoo on each arm. Mine have a meaning associated with them, don't judge on appearances.

I think you can get the idea from these pics.

This damn war is really driving me to want a peace symbol on my right forearm. Its too bad I'm broke at the moment.

I've got quite a few small ones, some of them I made myself and they're all done over 23 years ago.
I've got a bat on my left shoulder, blue butterfly, small almost faded ant and half a heart on my big toe. It's almost 25 years old and so close to the sole so its worn out.
I've wanted to make some new ones occationally, but spent my money on records and travelling instead.

i dunno what i want to get for my first tat.

i figure i go stereotypical and get a star-sign tat. i wouldn't mind a mean looking lion on my back somewhere.

I think they're mostly OK. Sometimes I see somebdy with one (or more) that are just not good and you think "yeah, you probably should have thought that through a little more, eh?" But I'm happy with all 3 of mine, although I might consider getting the one on my shoulder jazzed up a bit, it is starting to look a little faded. (That's what I get for not being more diligent about protecting it with sunscreen, I know.)

NO.

Tattoos made of brand icons are rubbish. Especially Playboy bunny tats.

Some tattoos look really cool. Others make me chuckle (like people who get band logos). I would never get one though. I've never seen or thought of anything so badass that I would get it on my body for the rest of my life.
The best is when people get symbols from different cultures without really knowing what it says. My friend got one on the back of his neck that was supposed to mean peaceful (or something close to that), but it was upside down which turned it into aggression (or something like that). So now he has a big black square on the back of his neck.

Me lady was telling me about a clip on Ripley's Believe or Not with blacklight tattoos. Its pretty self explanatory. Lights on, nothing. Lights off, nothing. Black Light on, Busta Rhymes video. I thought that was really really cool.

I knew a guy that had that. I know at the time it was illegal (the dye was not approved for use, I believe); dunno ifit still is or not. Anyway, he had his face done, sort of like a kabuki mask. It was pretty freakin' wild.

He was kind of an 'out there' bloke, but he was good fun. Once we dropped acid and got this brilliant idea to hop on a freight train. So we did. And then because we were fucked up, we lost track of time and jumped off and started flipping out because we figured we'd been on there forever and were now a thousand miles from home, and couldn't figure out how we'd get back because we had no money. We managed to find someone to take pity on us to give us a quarter for the phone so we could call his roommate and we're all panicked and didn't know where we were. So he's like "Well why don't you ask someone?" and we were like "oh yeah, right."

So in the end it turns out we'd only been gone for like 20 minutes, and were like 2 towns away.

Drugs are bad, kids.

(wow, I've kind of gone way off topic there, huh?)

It's always odd to see an elegantly dressed woman and then see that she's got something like a skull & crossbones tattooed fully across her back.

Those lower back tattoos don't look appealing even on a young woman with skin that's still taut. They're the ones that, I think, are going to look particularly bad once they fade after the woman ages and her weight shifts around. I'm starting to see some at the gym that are suffering the effects of that sort of thing--the tattoos wind up looking like blobby bruises (when the woman loses weight) or faded comic books (when she gains it).

A woman at my gym has about 30 tattooes and that's a lot of ink for her because she's <5' and weighs <100#. The weirdest of her tattooes are on her elbows: she had both of them tattooed a solid jade-greeny sort of color. I don't understand it but I guess beauty, eyes, beholder.

People who get tattoos should be required by law to view time-elapsed photographs of how their tattoo will likely stretch & fade over time. :D Especially if they're going to tattoo text onto themselves.

the most beautiful tattoo i saw was on someone's foot, between the ankle bone and the heel. it was small, delicate, gorgeous. i was jealous that i didnt have one like that.

personally, i really want to tattoo my inner wrists. that has a very very strong meaning to me right now.

my brother recently got "BMX" tattooed on his lower arm. he loves it. he calls bmx the love of his life. that's probably why his girlfriend threw a hissy fit over it. i think it's nice. im glad he got it.

i find girls with lower back tats kinda like the same as girls who get tongue piercings for the wrong reasons. you do it for the sex factor, not your own personal pleasure. you need to find pleasure in the changing of your body, otherwise it is and it looks stupid.

im afraid of getting my first tattoo because i know it will escalate into something. i wont be able to have just one. just like piercings, i feel that marking my body is something i enjoy on many levels. i like what it means to me to have metal or ink painfully put in me. each of my piercings, and im sure my tattoos one day, have a very strong significance.

Some maybe, but not all. My sis has a lovely lotus blossom at the small of her back, and it's quite pretty.

something that has significance is important. I am not a huge fan of tattoos if they are not significant in some way.

I've thought about getting one, but I haven't really come up with anything of significance. I did at one point, and it kind of fell through because plans changed and it didn't apply any more.

Meh.

How would you know what 'significance' someone else's tattoo might have, or how important it might be to them?

thing is, I don't assume either way when I see someones tattoo that I do not know. I am indifferent at that point.

If I talk to them, and ask, and there is 'significance,' cool. If they got it just because they think it looks cool, well, I'm not as much of a fan.
