theres a big discussion going down about how the National Gallery of Australia just forked out $35 million for a Wassily Kandinsky painting. the talk back radio host [steve price 2UE sydney] wanted people to call up who had heard of him and to make him understand why we were spending that much on a painting by a guy no one had heard of. i was on hold forever, and then my mobile rang about a job, so i had to hangup. dammit. i wanted to be on radio!

"no-one has heard of"??
holy cow! how's that for ignorant?!

kandinsky was one of the greats of the 20th century!

but i suppose the only artists most people have heard of are picasso and van gogh
i really can't stand that attidute of "ugh, i haven't heard of it, must be worth nothing" (n)

i know. but its talk back radio, and the presenters tend to be a bit ignorant. there were about 10 or more callers on before i even hung up, who knew who he was. the points i was going to make were:

1. even if you havent heard of him, its a great investment- look at blue poles. who had heard of jackson pollack, and now look at how much its worth!
2. you dont have to like all art, its a matter of opinion.
3. so what if he isnt picasso. theres a lot of stuff out there thats not picasso.

yeah, well. now that im unemployed, i get to hear it ALL THE TIME cos my mum and dad listen to it for at least 11 hours a day. sigh. whats worse than the commentators are the really ignorant people who phone in to give their views. sheesh! some of the stuff they say borders on discrimination half the time!
