I see some parallels.

I am not a political science expert or historian but
let me know if this line of thought is erroneous.

Gorbachev ordered his troops out of Afghanistan.
Russia's occupation was over.
USA refused to co-operate with Gorbachev
to help with stabilizing Afghanistan's government.

It would be the freedom fighters that would determine the fate of
Afghanistan's government.

----------------------------

What led up to Gorbachev pulling his troops?
Can that happen ideologically with the PRC?
