Yeesh.
Kinda hard to believe that King of Rock came out 20 years ago.

I find it easy to believe!

Really?
Seems like yesterday, or the day before. Seems like about three days ago it came out. Right after Toto IV, which, I think, was last Friday.

We had this crappy, crappy cassette player in the journalism room... it was a mono book box of sorts, if you can imagine such a thing, but the nice thing about it was that the sound was pretty full at low levels, and in the journalism room, during the day, you had to play music softly because of the class next door (there was just a divider -- not a wall). Most people's boom boxes sounded like crap played quietly -- they just weren't built for it -- but this monobox was okay.
So weird... you popped the cassette in and it stuck part-way out, even when fully seated -- kind of like an eight-track cassette. Whoever designed that thing had something in mind, but I couldn't tell you what. It was pretty screwy.
Anyway -- one of my KoR (the album) memories was how often it got played in the journalism room. Kind of weird, because the guy who liked it the most and played it the most was otherwise into kind of late sixties/early seventies stoner stuff... and then this. Odd.

No one wants to listen to your Boogie Boys, MC Shy D, Comptons Most Wanted, & Poison Clan records anyways.
Keep the stereo in the basement.

I hear there's a bunch of reissues for those first Run-DMC albums. Looks like it's time to upgrade my CDs (and pass the hand-me-downs to my brother). ;)

There are 4 other Run DMC albums I prefer listening to over King Of Rock. If it wasn't for Crown Royal, I think this would easily be their weakest lp. I think Can You Rock It Like This is the only song off the album, apart fom the obvious classic title track, that stands out in my mind. And I believe it was penned by LL Cool J.

Right on brudda. I prefer most other Run-DMC albums to that one.

I wasn't laying claim for it being even a good album, actually. It's just a twenty-year milestone.

The one I can't get into at all is Back From Hell. It was the odd period when it was either hardcore or not, and I just don't think that the album was well made. That being said, Crown Royal is by far the worst.

i didn't like BFH....but 'groove to the sound' is incredible.....i like CR better.....the cameos and rehashed rhymes are sinful, but Run's the king!!!

The stand out track on King Of Rock is 'Darryl and Joe (Krush Groove 3)'. That song amazing. Nice disco groove, dope scratching outro, great b-boy lyrics. It's up there on my fav RUN-DMC records.
The best track on Back From Hell is 'Groove To The Sound'. What a dope fucking beat. Amazing. DMC kills this track. 'Livin In The City' is nice too.
Crown Royal? That record is shit. I almost ignore the fact ot ever came out. I can listen to 'Its Over' because Run's flow is kinda sick. Other than that. The record is shit.
I am feeling Run's new single 'Mind On The Road'. Anyone else think that 99 Problems was the inspiration for that beat? Maybe it's just me.

'daryl & joe' is the best KOR track.....i was gonna say that, but forgot.....CR's an embarrassment, but Run's flow is sick regardless.....'take the money and run' with Everlast should of been a single......the first track with J*Dupri is good as well......
