I want to know exactly why, specifically, people think that movie sucks.
it comes off like that pretentious asshole who purposely talks over your head so that he can feel smart about himself.
it seems like a cool concept that nobody really constructed a plot around. it's a bunch of "odd" characters walking around in a series of drawn out slow-motion tracking shots set to 80's pop (cuz it's "trendy") and having conversations in scenes that don't really add up to a whole dozen donuts.

bleh, I don't think the soundtrack was done to be "trendy" at all.
there are some definite plot holes, but overall I think it's a gorgeous movie.
also, nobody talks over my head. I think it's possible that there was symbolism thrown in like, "cellar door", that was a little iffy, but ultimately I believe that it was about important life/death issues that people don't usually even try to think about because it's too confusing or distressing.
the acting is phenomenal, jake is beautiful, the cinematography is top notch.
it's the opposite of shitty.
what's a good movie to you?

good question.

This is the main reason I didn't like it.
And fine if people do, but what's with the fucking obssession about it? Why is it worthy of that? That's the thing I don't understand.

I was a bit disappointed by donnie darko but i wouldn't say it's a "fucking shitty movie". My test of whether a movie is good or not is whether I watch it through to the end, and I watched donnie darko through to the end. only once though.

people tend to forget that the main character was clinically mentally ill, delusional, probably suffering from schizophrenia...hence the looping, nonsensical plot holes, etc...

I'm in the "it's okay but it's wildly overrated" camp.
Art needs a certain amount of substance to back up pretention. Donnie Darko seemed like almost all foreplay to me... foreplay with very diminishing returns.
I haven't watched the special edition; I don't know if that solves the problems or not.
The one bit that I think was undeniably classic was the therapy session in which the kid starts to put his hand down his pants.
Frank really, really didn't work. That hurts.
You know what else the movie reminds me of? Being stoned with someone who's talking and really, really sure that he or she's saying something incredibly important, but the way the thing is being said means it's nonsense. There's also a kind of frustration because it seems so urgent that maybe there is something there, but stonee just doesn't have the communication skills to get it across. Either that, or it really is shite after all, but no one will ever know.

When you saw it for the first time, like I did, the movie can't help but to be special.
Anyway, take the DVD back and exchange it for Spy Kids or something.
I like the 80s feel to the movie, the transitions, audio, and the sister looks like she has a fun mouth.
even though the ending was shitty, i liked the movie overall....

I made a movie about failure many years ago and argued that if it wasn't good, it was in keeping with the theme, so it couldn't, um, fail.
But it had a great title: Ghosts of Failures, Barking. (y)

For the love of god, please tell me that Dandy and Mr. Films dislike The Usual Suspects. It's maybe the most overrated film ever. The plot is completely stupid but the writer wons awards because "it was all made up, none of it happened, so it's not supposed to make sense."

That was the best part about the movie. Next to Swayze's kiddie porn ring.

I don't understand all these morons who are like "OMG I DONT UNDERSTAND.... BS LOL!"
It is very nicely filmed, the script is both witty and articulate, and the plot makes perfect sense as long as your IQ is double figures. All these idiots who say "you need to watch it more than 5 times to get it!" are just that- idiots.
Donnie Darko is a very well rounded, clever film. If you're not well rounded or clever then obviously you're going to think it is shit.

I'm watching it right now and the soundtrack is really good, phenominal actually. I guess I'm biased because I kind of remember that Era very well. I appreciate films that recreate an Era. Era films.
