It is, of course, impossible to calculate the influence that the city of New Orleans has had on music and musicians, but this morning as House of the Rising Sun popped up on my iPod, I started trying to think of as many songs as I could that mention New Orleans in the lyrics.

I am sure there are many, but off the top of my head this is what I came up with:
House of the Rising Sun, the Animals
Go to Mardi Gras, Professor Longhair
Big River, Johnny Cash
City of New Orleans, John Denver
Tangled Up in Blue, Bob Dylan

Can anyone think of any others?

Try and use just your memory for this, not the net. I mean I could just run a web search myself, you know? But this way it's more interesting.

I can only think of artists connected with New Orleans; Alex Chilton, Muddy Waters, Fats Domino, Robert Johnson, Johnny Thunders (well he went and died there), Harry Connick Jr., BB King...

I'm so sad because New Orleans, and especially the French Quarters, were one of my "gotta visit before I die" -list, and now they don't exist anymore, not in their old glory at least. :(

oh yeah and RL Burnside who died a week ago (RIP), but maybe he was from further up Missisippi. I had an honour to see him live once, supporting Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. I've never heard dirtier language from an old man.. :p :D

You will still beable to visit the French Quarter. It wasn't hurt as bad as you think. Even Bourban St. is still very much intact.I can only think of artists connected with New Orleans; Alex Chilton, Muddy Waters, Fats Domino, Robert Johnson, Johnny Thunders (well he went and died there), Harry Connick Jr., BB King...

ROYAL ORLEANS- Led Zeppelin

Royal Orleans
-------------
One-time luck, a-take care how you use it
A-try to make it last all night
And if you take your pick, be careful how you choose it
Sometimes it's hard to feel it bite, feel it bite

A man I know went down to Louisiana
Had himself a bad, bad fight-a
And when the sun peeks through, John Cameron will see Santa
and kiss the whiskers left and right, whiskers

Now, now, now, a fight subsides out at a hotel in the Quarter
Our friendship took a bash tonight
Now, love gets hot, look far for a sea with water
Growin' whiskers in there through the night
Whiskers

Down on Bourbon Street, you know it's right
You'll be seein' my friends
when they run around all through the night
Most everywhere, 'till that closet's bare
Want for the razor, fun doin' up my hair

New Orleans queens sure know how to shmooze it
Maybe for some that seems alright
When I step out and strut down with my sugar
She better not talk like Barry White

Now, one-time luck, take care how you use it
Try to make it last all night
And if you take your pick, be careful how you choose it
Sometimes it's hard to feel it bite-a

The beginning of "House of the Rising Sun" is so cool, it's like a book that just grabs you from the first sentence.

I've been listening to Louisiana Scrapbook (Rykodisc) again, first time in years, it's a compilation of Cajun & Zydeco Houserockin' music.

i've been jamming a compilation by Rhino entitled "New Orleans Party Classics" , there is one track by the Hawkettes, who at the time were a high school band consisting of the future Neville Brothers...

New Orleans isn't mentioned in the lyrics of that song, so it does not qualify.

No it doesn't, but I never knew what levee meant until Katrina happened (never bothered to check the dictionary).

there are still levees up and down the MIssissippi RIver Coast.

"when the levee breaks" is an old blues standard, based on the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, taken out of the Mississippi Delta and passed along to Bluesmen going up the Mighty Mississippi going up to Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City and points North...

Don't it make you feel bad
When you're tryin' to find your way home,
You don't know which way to go?
If you're goin' down South
They go no work to do,
If you don't know about Chicago....

true, but it's doubtless the more familiar version, and the one that prompted the thought.

My musical reflection of New Orleans would have to be thinking back to when I went there for Jazz Fest. There was music everywhere. It is such a awesome city for that. If it wasnt a concert, it was a street performer or a soundsystem or even a cab ride. I always heard awesome music the entire time I was there. Visiting Tippentino's was great too. It is the oldest saloon in the US and just walking in that place, I felt years of vibrations from legends who had played there.
