View Full Version : Photos of Katrina Victims

Hurricane Katrina has produced some of the most dramatic and devastating American images since September 11, 2001. Despite FEMA's prohibition on journalists accompanying search and rescue teams (justified out of "respect for the dead"), the truth will get out. And a single picture is worth a thousand platitudes.
Bloated politicians thirsty for cheap photo-ops should seek elsewhere. After all, it's hard for them to win elections by kissing a child who was abandoned, starved, and raped on their watch.

I think the photos should be available to the public to see, but not plastered all over the place so you can't see anything but NO photos.

Photos of the dead will save lives in the future.
People might just wake up and listen when told to evacuate.

People placed in the Superdome by government officials were forbidden to leave.
In the event of a national emergency, NEVER allow yourself to be herded.

What a bullshit poll. 'Americans need to know the price of neglect.' What about Yes, Americans want too see that grotesque shit. Every body does not want or need to see it. Its' not neglect that a cat.4 hurricane hit. It's not neglect that Bush and the mayor of NO said leave the area before the storm hit as many people did(might be why the death toll will be much lower than people expected.) If you do have a need to see the grossness of decaing bodies there are plenty of places to look besides mainstream media.

Why don't they need to see it? Because seeing the true human cost of this disaster of ineptitude makes some people uncomfortable in their comfortable suburban homes, and makes it harder to pretend that everything's A-OK in the land of free (free as long as you aren't too poor or too black or god forbid both, that is)?

It does not need to forced fed to us like everthing else the media. There are plenty of other media outlets for people who want to see the gory side of the disaster. Those details do not have to be shoved down everyone's throat to realize the extent of it. I would not want to be flipping through channels and come across a dead friend or family member broadcasted around the world. Would you want your bloated mug aired so your kids, parents or friends to see. It's not a political thing(like most posters in this forum make it,) it's a respect thing.

It's not about 'wanting to see the gory side'. It's about facing the truth.

Showing dead bodies is not facing the truth. It's sensationalism.

You're right. No one should have to see how awful this situation truly is if they don't want to. Why should people in nice happy places like sunny California have to look at that? I mean it's, like, totally gross. I'm sure the fanilies of those victims would much rather we look away and ignore all that yucky stuff. P.U. Stinky. I mean, we watch TV to escape from all that crappy real life stuff, right?

Does anyone 4 years ago today when FOX news decided to start filming not just the bodies at ground zero, but filming those poor souls jumping from the top floors? I do. I remember flipping through the channels, and some fuckface was saying "Wow, this really is bad. People feeling so trapped they have to jump...NOW, LIVE, WATCH THEM THE WHOLE WAY DOWN, ONLY ON FOX NEWS!"
Totally inappropriate.
I don't know about showing the victims' bodies. It may be a little disrespectful, just because if I was in that situation, I wouldn't want any friends or families to be forced to see me like that. I think most people should have enough heart and soul that when they see the crying family members begging for help, it should be enough to hit them with cold hard reality.

The feds weren't going to let the press see the bodies of its victims until the media got a court order from a judge. Then the feds acted like they volunteered to let the press have access.
All those lawyers in the white house and they all forgot the pesky first amendment. :(

So basically like the 9/11 commission, where they fought it tooth and nail, and when they found out they couldn't anymore, they accepted it and acted as if they wanted it in the first place?
Didn't they do that with Max Clelland's Homeland Security bill too? It was pre-9/11 and they said they didn't want it and told him basically to fuck off, then 9/11 happened, they jacked the idea from him and added a whole bunch of Republican propaganda to it and then re-released it? And then attacked Clelland for not supporting it, because he was "unpatriotic" though he originally crafted it and wasn't supporting it because it was utter bullshit on the Republicans part?
Not quite the same thing, but still just as fucked up. More so, actually.

Remember the image of the naked child running, skin burned by napalm? It changed the course of the Vietnam War.
Regarding loved ones who might see their dead relatives on television... After a week in the sweltering, humid New Orleans heat, corpses become unrecognizable. But perhaps we will recognize them as us. We are meat. Pure cannon fodder.
Go ahead, die. Just make sure you don't smoke a joint to ease your pain on the way out.
And after you are gone, we'll make sure to bury the truth. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

I am still waiting on the 87 pics and videos from Abu Ghraib that haven't been released.
The fact is people, we employ the government. Their job is not to cover up their own mistakes, but to make them known to their employers so judgement can be rendered. It really is that simple. If you don't want to see them then turn away, but it is necessary to completely understand the situation. We all know how the truth can be twisted with simply words to rely on. Censorship on this level has no place in American society.

That's not the same as showing pictures of Hurricane Victims. It's too late to do anything about those people, those pictures degrade the dead, recognisable or not.
They are being used for political purposes and to sell newspapers.
I think it's in bad taste. I don't want to see those pictures.
I was in NYC in October 2001 and do you think I wanted to go to Ground Zero and look at that place, knowing that there were so many corpses still buried in the rubble, to smell them rotting? Of course not. So why would I want to see pictures of Hurricane victims? What good would it do me or them?
People are SICK!

There is no denial of the dead. The dead do not need to be splattered all over the news to prove a point. Everyone knows the dead are there.

Oh honey. If you think that was 'blasting' you, you must have the softest hindquarters north of the equator.
But, since you're obviously such a very very sensitive soul who can't really hack it when someone doesn't kiss that soft little hiney of yours, and you get all worked up and throw your toys out of the pram at the slightest provocation, I promise from now on I'll use only the plush velvet gloves with you from now on.
Now there there, cheer up sweetie and have a cookie. You want some milk with that, pumpkin?
