yeah, ok.
but what about weights and shit? are they important or good or anything?

You can make weights out of ordinary household objects. Cans of soup, books and other similar items. All the classes you can easily buy videotapes that simulate the routines.

Gyms are a waste of money. The only small benefit are possible trainers that you pay extra for anyway.

well what do you want from the gym? gyms have weight machines and stuff that are pretty cool, but for the most part they don't really do anything you can't do with free weights (by free i mean dumbbells and barbells, which obviously you'd have to buy) that i'm aware of. if you want to use the treadmills or something, i'd say don't bother, just run around the street or something.

zorra_chiflada
09-08-2005, 10:20 PM
yeah, i think the concept of treadmills is lame.
joe's sister bought a thousand dollar treadmill which seemed like the most pointless waste of money ever

and remember to do warm-ups before anything you don't want to pull a charley horse or something. Um....Bike riding is goood. Works your ass and legs. You can do some up hill but I bet where you live everything is flat.

I joined a gym once, was a deally with school cause they didn't have any sports programs or facilities. We just used the pool & sauna tho :D I tried the equipment but i'm just not motivated enough and don't really care enough to do it regularly. So my advice would be - to start doing exercise outside the gym, and make sure you can stick to it, then join the gym once you know you're gonna stick to it.

okay us weights of any kind a bar or watermelon anything heavy and do sit-ups with it. Make a number of sets of any that you want and stick with it until you are use to it. I do these for Le Pakour so I don't get hurt of jumping roof to roof from factorys.

Yeah its not very well made, but interesting none the less. They only get rice to eat and they have like 10 seconds to assemble in a group, fully clothed and kitted up, from when they are called, no matter what they are doing (ie having a shower etc.)

Yeah some of them were pretty awesome though, its just they were really harsh, i remember that one where they were made to hold onto a horizontal pole and not touch the ground, and the best guy was on there for a rediculous amount of time.

When the sidewalks are ice and snow covered, it's not possible to run or walk on them. And biking is right out during most of the winter here.

If you're like me and have done lots and lots of sports throughout life, you will probably have injuries that require special attention. I tore a calf muscle awhile back and hurt a knee in a marathon from years ago; those two injuries make it so that I have to be careful about the type of consistent, impact-laden exercise that I get. I can't just go running for two hours a day or I'm certain that I'd reactivate those injuries. I have to balance running with other types of exercise and a gym is the only place that offers that level of versatility.

As the rest of you get into your 20s and 30s, you'll understand that more and more. (You'll also need more exercise as you get into your 20s and 30s to combat your slowing metabolism and the effects of other lifestyle changes that you'll undoubtedly undergo. You'll have to fit exercising into the available slots in your schedule and a gym facilitates that. That's why I'm up right now--getting ready to go to the gym because this is when I can do it in my schedule and it's when my body best responds to exercise now.)

I also like the social aspect of my gym--I have indirect company there and that's nice and can be motivating.

My post ^^^ was in response to people saying that gyms are shit/e. They're not that for everyone (but I know that they are for some, especially if you're young).

I think I remember in some other thread awhile back that you said that no one needs a gym and that people should, instead, take a walk around the block. If you feel that way and then buy a gym membership, will you use it? You've got to think about that and ask yourself these questions:

. What are your fitness goals?
. Can a gym help you to meet/sustain those goals year-round?
. Is there a gym close to where you live/work?
. Does it offer the equipment/activities that'll help you meet & keep your goals?
. Is the gym that you're likely to go to open when you need it to be?
. For the hours when you plan to exercise, are there long lines at the
machines that you'll want to use? Are the activities over-booked? Are
the pool lanes filled?
. Can you afford this particular gym?
. Are there hidden fees involved for certain activities (e.g., spinning)?
. Do you like the types of people who belong to the gym and who use it when you plan to?
. Will you go to a gym often enough to meet/sustain your goals?

. If you don't join and use a gym, what can you do year-round to reach & maintain/support your goals?

Most people who buy home equipment use it for a few months and then stash it somewhere out of the way.

And most people who buy a gym membership use it to reach a goal but they don't use it to maintain themselves after they reach that goal. Then the membership lapses and they've lost money and the hard work they put into reaching their goals.

About costs--it'll vary from gym to gym and from city to city. Your university might have reasonable gym facilities. Where I work, we have an excellent facility, but the hours are wrong for me and it's always jammed. And I don't like it when my co-workers in the locker room watch me while I'm nekkid. I pay to use a private facility that helps me to meet my goals.

I agree it is a waste of money unless your using the pool or basketball courts during the winter then its worth while. Other wise you should just work out at home.

Zorra, I'm a gym instructor, and I have some advice, might help you.

1) Like Heiress says, do Pilates if you want to tone your stomach. Not with a video though, go to a beginners class. There are a lot of complicated moves, and an instructor will make sure your technique is good, so you won't injure yourself. Also, to control your breathing. Classes will also help you to progress better than a video, and are better for motivation. Pilates is great for long term stability of postural muscles. Ao you won't have back trouble as an 'oul wan.

2) To tone your stomach, combine cardio work (at least 20 mins) with toning excercises for your stomach. Exercises like sit-ups (and all variations), oblique curls (espesially these) and side bends with light weights. Pick maybe two excercise of these, and 2/3 sets of each.

4) Exercising first thing in the morn BEFORE EATING will burn fat stores straight away and help lose weight quicker if thats what you want.

3) Do join a gym. Its a cliche but its an investment in yourself, you feel better after exercise (positive endorphines). Its very hard to motivate yourself by exercising at home alone. You will exercise better in an environment that is specifically for that purpose. Take the shortest membership option available first to see if you like it. Use the gym instructors as much as poss, ask loads of q's.

4) Don't worry about beefcakes, they don't look at other people, only themselves.

5) Gyms are great places for meeting people. Fact. Just saying.

Sorry for the long and serious post people, I just like my job.

like H said its good to have a motivation, a habit..a reason..a place to get in a zone.

take classes instead of just the gym..that way you'll have a schedule you have to follow and you'll blend in rather then always fighting for machines or equipment.

its a great break from my normal daily routiene of doing jack shit

Or maybe it just wasn't the right thing for you right then/there.

I've been going to a gym forever but I also run and do other outdoor things during the other three seasons. I like doing both indoor and outdoor stuff and splitting it up helps to keep me from getting injured.

I know people who would just as soon drink spittoon juice than to go into a gym. Ick. :)

I forgot to say this: most gym administrators will give you a month-long membership for free if you ask them. Maybe try that before you commit with money...that way, you'll know if you like the place and the whole experience.

My gym turns into a different place altogether after 6pm.
