Mary J. Blige blew U2's "One" right away.

The Foo Fighters singing "Born on the Bayou" was the highlight for me with Garth Brooks doing "Who'll Stop the Rain" pulling in second. I'm not a Garth fan, but I liked the way he did that song.

Alicia Keys' song--with the four gospel voices singing in tandem--felt over-the-top and disjointed. (Sorry.) I enjoyed each of their voices alone, but it got to a point where I couldn't discern one voice from the other and it felt like they were struggling.

Sheryl Crow (playing piano instead of guitar) sounded perfect; so did the Dixie Chicks. I don't know the titles of their songs, though, but they were pretty and appropriate. And except for one tiny bit during "Take Me to the Mardi Gras," I enjoyed Paul Simon's performance and the dixie band that performed following him.

This telethon marks the first time when I've enjoyed watching and listening to Rod Stewart.

Randy Newman doing Louisiana 1927...what can I say. I love him, I love his voice.

As for celebrity appearances, Ray Romano thinking he was off camera when he wasn't was a little bit funny; Jack Nicholson looked great; I absolutely did not recognize Jennifer Aniston; Morgan Freeman and Ellen Degeneres were perfect and appropriate; Chris Rock said "George Bush hates midgets." :) None of the other celebrity bits are standing out to me this morning.

Interspersed among the performances were photos and videos of the victims and the aftermath. I won't forget one image: a skinny, shirtless little boy looking positively world weary and his teddy bear was cast to the side. That videos/photos/interviews part of the show was effective but not exploitative.
