In one of their biographies, it explains about the "racial shit." Mind you, almost all their friends at the time were black - Run DMC, LL Cool J, Afrika Bambaataa, Whodini, etc. And it was natural for them to call each other 'niggas' around each other, the Boys were seen as little brothers to all of them and it was more of a loving word that they used in that sense. So when they went out on stage (I actually think it was the Apollo, but I could be wrong), and said "What's up my niggas?" they didn't mean it as something mean or disrespectful, they meant it as a term of endearment. However, in the mid-80's, it wasn't seen as anything but racist.
But think nowadays, if Eminem came out on stage and said "What's up my niggas?" Would that be racist? No. Because you know, since a lot of his acquaintances and friends are black, he doesn't mean it in a racial slur sense, he means it in a loving way. But since the Beasties were pretty much the first white rap group, they were seen as outsiders to begin with, so saying something like that was incredibly faux pas; they just didn't see it that way.

So I guess when black people say it to each other, they're being racist to each other too?
Do you think when black use the term "whiteys" or "crackers" they're being racist? Most people don't.
It's double standards, and it's crap. The Beasties didn't see it as being racist. They saw themselves as part of the rap scene, and that's what people said to each other, something that was meant to be a term of endearment.
I believe that terms such as 'nigga', 'whitey', or 'cracka' are racist only if they have premeditated malice behind such statements. Like if you say "You're being gay," nowadays. That, in fact, means "You're being stupid," not "You, sir, are a homosexual who has sex with men." Saying "What's up niggas?" does not mean "What's up people who were once slaves to the white man" as much as it means "What's up my brothers." It would be racist if in fact, they said something along the lines of "You all are a bunch of no-good niggers." or the like.
Granted, I'd rather not see anyone use the terms (white or black) because I feel like it hinders society's growth, but just because they're still used does not make them automatically racist.

"niggers" was a terrible term and still is, coined by white slave owners. blacks can use it a term of endearment, their out of those barbaric chains and the use of the word amongst each other is almost is one born through the bonds of slavery and almost like a tribute to their ancestors struggle. theres no way that "whitey" or "cracker" are even as 1/1,000,000 as a negative term as "nigger". thats the biggest load of bullshit i've ever read. if i ever got called a "whitey" or a "cracker" why should i feel any ill feelings? those words hold no substance at all

no
its obviouse that they wernt intending it in a mean way and they thought it wouldov bin alright. but its also obviouse that the black crowd didnt apreciate it.
and eminem would get bashed if he said niggas. he has never said it in any song and probably never a concert either

GODDAMMIT, CAN ANY OF YOU PEOPLE READ? I was using the example IN CONTEXT. If someone says "whitey" it would not be considered racist by most people. And the way that Beastie Boys used "nigger" in this sense is the exact same way. It would not be considered racist by most standards.
It's NOT racist if it doesn't have any PREMEDITATED MALICE behind it! The Beastie Boys used "nigga" as a TERM OF ENDEARMENT, they used it all the time with their black friends in the day, so it was NOT a negative term in that sense.
This isn't an argument about double standards, or which word is worse, it's an argument of WAS IT RACIST IN THIS CONTEXT? But if you want to talk about double standards, so be it. I agree that "whitey" is not as bad as "nigger." The exact opposite of "whitey" as a matter of fact, is "blackie." If a white person was called "whitey" by a black person, it's all cool. Yet if a black person gets called "blackie" by a white person, it's racist. Care to explain that?

Exactly. It's hard to say how people would react to it nowadays. I think it would be mixed, actually. I made the point that they misunderstood the Beasties' intentions in the '80's since they were the first white rap band around. They already were forced with an uphill battle of getting acceptance from the audience, and to use that word in a way of doing so was *not* a good idea.
The only point I was trying to make is that "nigga" is not always a racist term, and now it's blown up to an argument on the other board over whether or not people are insulted, when you can't assume that all black people would have the same reaction.

Some nationalist put a flier on my window today sayin something like this "white people are being over looked in pro football, there are hardly any white people at the safety and cornerback position and that the growing rate in the pro football ranks are always pro black more so than white and that people should stop saying whites are racists when blacks are the most racists in the world of sports"
i never thought of it like that, i dont think something like that would ever been said back 20 years ago.
You have to agree that nationalist do have some good arguements, but morally wrong i guess you could say.
Im sure some blacks looked at the beasties back in the day of being intruders to 'their' game. I wonder how they dealt with the criticism? Touring with Run DMC im sure helped, but that madonna tour must of been brutal.

I thought they denied the Apollo thing. Not that anyone believes them. And it wasn't "nigga".
No one disputes that their hearts were in the right place re black people and black music. It was assumed that they were young and incredibly stupid.
P.S. I think it's perfectly ridiculous for a white person to call anyone "nigga".

Yeah and they also opened up for Madonna because she didn't know shit about them except for the fact that she thought they were all "cute".
Proved her wrong, big dick on the stage, beer thrown into the audience, girls dancing in cages. Damn, why was I too young to go to that concert?

Cheers for that Midzi. I like that little article, especially as it's from someone who was there. I like Doc Dre's take on the whole sage, saying it how it was. It's potenially (as the other article makes out) a dmagaing issue, but he keeps it good humoured and well natured.
I can just see Yauch getting out of there and Adrock yelling his 'come on y'all!' now. But yeah, main point is that Dre puts it across as an edearing term, no need to make such a big deal out of something that we're going to get so many different opinions on (it's a complex topic), when really there's just no need for it in this case.

I think the beastie boys said "nigger" because they were being smart asses. That might be why they don't have many Black fans (that I know of at least). I know they always acted that way, but that was really stupid.
"niggers" was a terrible term and still is, coined by white slave owners. blacks can use it a term of endearment, their out of those barbaric chains and the use of the word amongst each other is almost is one born through the bonds of slavery and almost like a tribute to their ancestors struggle. theres no way that "whitey" or "cracker" are even as 1/1,000,000 as a negative term as "nigger". thats the biggest load of bullshit i've ever read. if i ever got called a "whitey" or a "cracker" why should i feel any ill feelings? those words hold no substance at all
What if somebody's white child was called a "cracker" and they were killed because of their race? What about people who are called a "faggot" and get beaten up? A hateful word is a hateful word. There shouldn't be a measure of how bad each one is since everybody's experience has been different and they are out of hatred.
By the way, I have had lots of Black friends who say they don't even know why they use the word "nigga". There are obviously Black people who don't just use the word out of endearment.
