Reason is great, but if you just want to jump right in and start making beats, I would recomened "ACID"... It is super simple and user friendly...

can you actually make beats on acid? i thought it was just for sequencing/mixing.
I use Fruity Loops for mine. Cool Edit some samples, throw your kicks/snares/hats into Fruity and go to work.
it would be pretty tough to make beats on acid since like brmanuk just said it's more just for squencing. i like reason though it's lackin on some major shit. for instance, the way the software is built, the sounds in sequencer mode will only play if you run them from the start. if you preview your work starting from like 1/3 into the song, the sound bits that have already passed it's starting position won't play.
anyway an excellent software for mixin audio would be adobe audition. it would be a hassle to actually produce an entire beat with it though.

I stand corrected.. I worded myself incorrectly... Argh beer and typing dont mix... I actually use fruity loops to make the beats, then export them into acid and sequence the beats with other samples...

I used Accoustica Beatcraft recently. That was pretty good.
