View Full Version : Katrina has overshadowed 9/11

Sure, 9/11 was tragic and whatnot, but I'm actually kind of pleased that everyone seems to be acknowledging that it would be a complete insult to rally around the anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers when we as a nation have bigger fish to fry in the south right now. I've been watching football all day and was expecting to be inundated with fascist bullshit about the terrorist attacks on this day in 2002, but it hasn't been mentioned once. I'm a little surprised and extremely relieved.

That's kind of how it is where I am, too. I mean, everyone obviously knows about it, but they don't seem to have enough perspective to give much of a shit. It's sick, really.

Don't want to be a smartass but... it was 2001 :)

edit: that's what you get when you waste tons of time writing a long ass post about things that are marginally on-topic and decide not to post it.

It's weird. Even we were surprised.

No 9/11 speak as of now. But I don't watch Fox News.

You know, politicians and politics in general make it so hard over here to care about 9/11 since it's more of a catch phrase used to force people to care about some bullshit war they're peddling.

Until the actual day comes along. For the past few years, it's been the exact same kind of day. Beautiful skies, warm weather, and it transports you back to that day 4 years ago. It all just kind of hits home how tragic it was that so many people died that day. It's this day I'm thankful that all my friends and family were okay; sad that friends of my friend's lost their lives; and incredibly pissed off that they use this day as an excuse to pass whatever legislation they're doing out of fear, and we're STILL AS FUCKING VULNERABLE AS THAT DAY 4 YEARS AGO, IF NOT MORE SO!

It's still a very sad day, though. I wish we still had as much support and love from the other countries as we had that day.

My friend was supposed to have her baby today but she had it 3 days early. It's a girl!!! (She has a two year old boy. He reports that he did not want a sister.)

I forgot it was 9/11 till I read this board.

She should tell the son that he'll either be nice to the girl, or she'll ship him off to Doodyland, the place that's filled with nothing but girls, cooties, and no candy.

I've thought I'd get away with that too, but I made the mistake of picking up the town newspaper. of course, the whole front page was an essay on "why we remember", along with a picture of the new york (pre-911) skyline with an eagle emblazend across the sky, and that quote from that "Let's Roll" guy on one of the planes. I felt punched in the face with a past tragety that people just keep bringing up.

in baseball today all the players hats had the American flag sewed on the side of their hat, but on their bating helmet they now have the Red Cross logo on it, and the 1800 Help Now phone line on the bases.

MLB is a big contributor to the Hurracaine Katrina Relief Fund. Good for them.

How come so many of you are acting like remembering/honoring the people who died that day is a bad thing?

Americans love 9/11 in a sick way.
I don't think that's a fair generalisation to make. Sure, some people get off on the 'orgy of grief'. But I am willing to bet the vast majority of Americans, regardless of political affiliation, look at the day as an opportunity for quiet reflection and contemplation. It's just that you don't hear about that. Because it's quiet. It's only the bigmouth yahoos who draw attention to themselves that make it look as though 'everyone' gets all up in it. When people were asked if Sept 11 should be made a national holiday, the large majority said no, because they didn't want it to become just another excuse ten years down the line to have a big sale at Sears.

same here. The day after it happened, some local radio DJs were saying oh yeah Katrina hit New Orleans, that sucks, then they proceeded to make fun of the newscasters that have talked about the coming of Katrina. Mimicing them and such as if it were a joke.

Hopefully by now they apologized but I wouldn't know if they did. I haven't bothered listening in since I heard about their lack of souls.
