View Full Version : oh god i'm out of shape
i've just been to the gym after a whole summer of not going and i can't lift my arms. i guess 4 months of sitting still will do this to you. and i think something is horribly wrong with my right arm. i was doing curls (with the little dumbbells, one arm at a time), and i couldn't get my right arm all the way up about halfway through. it's not like it hurt too much or it was too heavy or anything, i just couldn't quite get it to go up all the way. which i find odd, because that's the arm that i masturbate with, so in theory, that should be in better shape than the other one, but no. different muscles, i guess.
man i can't even lift a book right now. i kind of missed this feeling though, i feel alive again, and less like a lump of some sort.

GLUTAMINE!
GLUTAMINE!
that sounds like it's for your butt, is it for your butt?

no silly. it's an amino acid that you can take as a supplement that will cut down your recovery time (it helps with lactic acid buildup). try this: get a good protein powder (designer whey is a good cheap one) and a glutamine powder and take them together in a shake one hour to 40 minutes before working out and then again immediately after working out.

It's a non-essential amino acid. Don't you just love how she shouts out supplements without any additional information? :p You could also take L-Arginine or an amino acid complex. Or you could eat creatine sammiches like your old friend/roommate was going to give you. Whatever happened with that anyway?
EDIT: oh look at that she fleshed it out.

Do you work out?
I never knew so many people worked out until I moved into college. Then it was like everyone worked out. I wondered if I'd been oblivious to it in the past or if these people simply used to be on athletic teams in high school and were used to the training for that. That's when I found out that people's moms even worked out. I had never even considered that. No one in my family went to gyms.

i don't recall anything about creatine sandwiches. maybe all this working out has made me so gigantically muscular that i'm now more brains than brawn and i've forgotten about that because it had to go to make room for more pure musclebound gorgeousness
either that or you're thinking of someone else
i have some protein powder stuff that i've been taking, and i've been told that eating peanut butter will help too. i'm going to try the two together and see if it tastes as awesome as i think it's going to.

No it was you I'm sure of it. Your friend was going to give you some weight gain powder like creatine and you were wondering about how to mix it.

oh, that. yeah, i mixed it with milk. it tastes ok. it's kind of like drinking sugary chalk, but it's tolerable

do NOT take creatine with your protein powder! if anything, mix creatine with grape juice. it's a good juice for that because it won't form crealkaline (i think that's how it's spelled) with the sugar and be hard on your kidneys and all.
try mixing the protein shake with lots of different things. i like a scoop of peanut butter, a banana, and some chocolate syrup. try yogurt, ice cream, blueberries, any frozen berries...be creative.

Crank is speed, and twists sounds like Brit speak for those twisting situps where you cross elbows to touch alternating knees.

shit yeah! cinnamon and sugar. *grabs coat* let's go.
pushups i have a hard time with for some reason. i really think something's wrong with my right arm, it just gives up at the elbow before i can straighten it out, and pushups require both your arms to work together (unless you're doing the one arm kind)...my right arm gives up and i fall down and it's embarrassing.

Sometimes I do for awhile and then I don't. I did buy a piece of equipment for home use which has helped. I also bought a big mirror to better see myself kiss my bicepts after a good workout.
I don't think I could keep up with your dancing though.

What does "working out" mean?
Is it doing something specifically so that you raise your heartrate & sustain it for <n> minutes?
Does it imply that you're doing something that you have to do but maybe don't want to do?
Example: if you go to a gym or go out running (and don't like it but do it anyway) is that working out? If so, are you working out if you go cycling (and enjoy it)?
I don't usually say that I'm working out. I say that I'm exercising. 99% of the time when I exercise, I don't feel like what I do is work--it's fun (whether I'm doing it in a gym or outdoors).
I did buy a piece of equipment for home use which has helped.
Was that the rowing machine? If so, worth it or no?
Echewta
09-12-2005, 12:28 PM
Yes, the rowing machine was way worth it. No stress on the knees. Plus I catch up on watching my foreign DVDs with the subtitles cause i can't hear jack during the row.

Last night I tried a rock climbing wall gym. It was awesome. And yes, I am out of shape. The wall told me so. But I have to go back. That was better exercise than anything else I do, and it's a mental challenge as well - which makes it more engaging and fun than mindlessly doing something repetitive.

When I'm on a cardio machine and can manage it, I use that time to empty my mind and practice various types of meditation. When I can do that, then that machine time is not totally wasted mental time. (I can't always manage it, though, and I wind up listening to music or watching ESPN--that's when it can feel like I'm wasting some aspects of that time.)
When I run for training runs, I like to do it alone. I find that experience much more challenging and ultimately invigorating than training with someone else.

I understand that. I didn't mean to say that one kind of exercise is better than another.
exercise log, day 3:
OH GOD THIS WORSE THAN THE OTHER 2 DAYS
it's not that bad really, it's only when i move my arms slightly in any direction. if i sit perfectly still it's ok. for most people, that would be a challenge.

It'll get better, promise. (Just stick with it or else you'll have to go through this over and over. I see people who do that. They work SO HARD to get somewhere and then they let it go and have to start all over again. All that start-up stuff/misery and they do it every few months. Ouch.)
For what it's worth, I think the hardest thing about exercise is already behind you: starting a program. The second hardest thing is sustaining it once you've reached your goals.

oh i know, i've been through it before. i started last semester, and i kept it up pretty well up until the end (i got sick, and by the time i was better, it was time to study for finals), then i didn't go at all over the summer (i worked all day and i didn't feel like doing anything afterwards), so i'm starting over. i have a lot of free time in the afternoon though, so i think i can keep it up again. it's just these first few days that suck

As long as someone is on the ground belaying me and there's little to no chance of me falling, I'll try it. But the wall has obvious things to grab and put my feet on. An actual rock is all natural and uneven and stuff.

I had great people belaying me. They had huge muscles...except for the one time when the girl was a 98 lb ballerina but she was still good, she caught me. Oh, there were times when my fingers were shakey and numb and I couldn't grip anything. But I loved LOVED the sensation of hoisting myself up the wall. I felt powerful. :o
