I have always made French Toast the classic american way, thick bread dipped in a bowl of whipped eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla and salt.
Since visiting Italy, I know cut out the center of the bread and pour the batter into the middle, anyone else do this?

Yes. I thought I could contribute nothing to this thread and perhaps take it to the gutter.

Cinnamon and vanilla? Wow!
I've done the American way a few times since seeing it on Kramer vs Kramer, but usually (on the rare occations I eat eggs) I just fry the egg (and I don't mind if it's sunny side up, "Frankie and Johnny" or totally fried) and put that on my slice of bread (or toast if it's (wholegrain )white bread.

Get say 3 eggs, crack em into a bowl, add a bit of milk maybe 4 tablespoons I dunno, mix it up with a fork or whisk, dip the bread in the mix and put it on the pan, and flip it, when its done, put sauce on the side of the plate and dip it in that. yum I cant wait till tomorrow now haha.

Yea, not just milk. Throw in a bit of crushed ice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and real vanilla. If you are crazy, crush up some pecans and chocolate chips and add to the mixture.
Thick slices of sourdough is the best bread to use.
And don't cook it in butter. Go oil.

Poached egg on toast is one of the best breakfasts ever.....the toast soaks up all the yolk...with some salt and pepper. YUM (y)

I used to love just plain french toast (bread being fried after being dipped in milk and eggs) with maple syrup, of course.
But now, I add cinnamon to the egg mixture and when it's done frying, I sprinkle icing sugar on top then add the maple syrup, VERY YUMMY!!!
I'm Canadian, so I gotta have maple syrup!!
Please elaborate (provide a receipe) on this egg in the middle thing, i'd like to try that, Thank you.
