Who thinks he'll get ANY Democrat votes in the Senate Judiciary Committee or in the full Senate?
Which ones? Any Republicans you think will vote against him?
Interested in your opinions....

Beats me. But if there are any Republicans who vote against his nomination, a possibility could be Sen. Voinovich. He was instrumental (along with the Dems) in blocking the vote for John Bolton.
But yeah, we'll just have to see.

I was watching Bill Maher's show tonight and he made do a double take. Last week I thought to myself that Roberts appears to me to be gay. I thought "how fucking ironic would that be if he were a closet homosexual". Bill Maher said that very thing on his show. Weird.

What does it matter if he's gay or not?

Well, right in my post I stated that I would find it terribly ironic if he was. Other than that nothing. I sure would prefer him turning out to be gay than turning out to be intending to overturn R v. W.

I guess my point is it shouldn't matter, in the slightest, if we was gay or not. Not to me, not to conservatives, not to you, etc.
Overturning Roe v. Wade? Not going to happen in our lifetimes. Put stricter and stricter controls on the worst parts of Roe v. Wade's implementation (i.e., partial birth abortions, parental notifications, etc.) - absolutely. Whether Roberts will be the one to tilt the balance in that direction is very debatable, especially with his devotion to precedent.

Shouldn't matter but does.
I watched the hearings and learned nothing of the man in general. Apparently, there are a lot of cases to come before the supreme court that have to do with everything so you can't talk about it.
What a joke. Someone up for the highest court position in the land and he doesn't answer questions and congresspersons spend 1/2 the time talking about what they believe in and look at me.
Disgusting.

Nope. I disagree that it does matter. It doesn't. Period. End of story.
As for the hearings themselves : your analysis is spot-on. It is a joke because whomever they put up for the Supreme Court must have a tabula rasa. It's a circus for whichever Senators happen to be on the Judiciary Committee to make their pretty little speeches and get on TV for awhile. Nothing substantive is going to be said because of what happened to Bork.
Now, you may argue that Bork's non-elevation to the Court was a good thing, but the precedent it set was for ANY nominee to not say anything at all that will stop him or her from making it to the Supreme Court. As long as that candidate can parrot the art of not saying anything, they're likely to get in due to the nature of the Constitution (i.e., advise and consent), which gives most of the power to place a Supreme Court Justice to the President, not to the Legislative branch. What would be an interesting debate would be to see what the alternative to this kind of system would be....
For example, what happens in Western European countries? How about Third World countries (those that have somewhat intact and independent judiciareies, that is)?

Why wouldn't he answer any direct questions about it then? The excuse that he cannot answer because of current or pending cases is acceptable, however, this is quite an important question.

I think it's just the wording of "lifestyle choices" that are too vague, you know, questions like are you "gay"?, "homosexual"?, "do you lead an alternative lifestyle?", this line of questioning by the senate could actually cloud decisions on pending court cases.
If the senate were smart (like me) they would of worded the queries differently, such as, "Do you plan on sucking anybody elses cock besides George Bush's while your Chief of SCOTUS?"

vicodin 5 has me in its grasp and I'm too lazy to spell good. Remember that Beatles song,
Dr. Robert, he's a man you must believe,
Helping everyone in need,
No one can succeed like Judge John Roberts
remember before this all began the media was concerned with karl Rove outing a CIA operative? Wha' happened with all that?
Congratulations on the Supreme Court nomination BTW.

Why did you taint that Beatles song like so?
Don't you know the surviving Beatles are all Conservatives now? Paul's a knight or a Lord or whatever, for pete's sake (no, not Pete Best ;) )

Everyone knew before it started there would be no fight. I find it odd that it got so much press, but if people listened to the actual answers he gave, they could have learned a lot. He's extremely qualified.
Like it or not, the president gets his choice unless the guy/gal has done something horrifically embarrassing. Bork didn't go down for his political ideals (even though that's why a lot of people wanted to take him down). He went down because he was an arrogant ass in the questioning and refused to prepare seriously (the polar opposite of Roberts). People more conservative than Bork got on the court by playing the game better. (and, imo, Bork still would have gotten the job if he hadn't been the one left holding the bag at the Saturday Night Massacre.)
This next round might be a lot uglier than the Roberts' round, but it will be equally pointless. After all the senators show off, the president will get his ultra conservative minority female, or whoever else his staff selects.

Ringo doesn't count. And as for Paul, John said it best - "The only thing you done was yesterday".
And I just love Paul's new commercial!

Truer words have rarely been spoken. Good show, Documad!
As for the next nominee - my prediction is that it will be a Hispanic, as they are the largest growing "minority" group in the US (they're already the majority in California). Republicans are going to co-opt the Hispanic vote and make the Demos the minority party for the next 30 years at least - mark my words.

Now you've done it! Say Say Say?
Go on.
He rues the day he met MJ! That was the when he advised MJ to invest in music catalogues and next thing ya know, the Beatles catalogue is iwned by the king of pop. I guess that's why sir Paul has to shill for mutual funds or whatever the hell.
And nothing he has ever done come close to John's work.

I agree with your last statement. It's part of the reason it's so fun to mock him.
Yeah...MJ really fucked him with the ownership of the Beatles' catalog, but wasn't that more Yoko selling out, if I remember correctly?
To get back on topic : maybe we can sic Roberts and the Supremes on Yoko to give the rights to the Beatles' catalog to Sean Lennon or something? :D (y) :p

Why? Yoko had more to do with the Beatles than Sean ever did. She sang on The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill as well as on Revolution #9 (one of the Beatles' best, but very underrated).
Sean wasn't even alive then.
Yoko broke up The Band, maaaaan!

Hmmm.....we've gone from John Roberts to talking about Yoko's impact on the Beatles' breakup.....
