Even though I know the ideal that "you're never too old to keep learning", I still feel embarrassed that, at my age, I am painfully wanting to try new things and challenges, and that there are some things I used to do, still want to keep doing, but have to take time off of it because there isn't enough time. These always seem like things that most people learn for the first time at a younger age, and keep up with.
It feels kind of silly to think I can learn to be any good at something starting so late, or if I only do it from time to time. I should have chosen my involvement years ago and now I should know where I belong and what I do. That doesn't make sense when you think about it, but that's how I feel. I still want to do it though.
I never tried real ballet until I was 18, or oil painting until I was in college, and I loved them! I didn't try Capoeira until last January and I love that too. Even if I don't keep up with it, it will always be something in my life. There are just too many things I want to do and keep doing and keep with me as part of who I am.

I feel too old to start some things, especially things that are physically challenging. I feel embarrassed to be a beginner. But I want it too much not to do it anyway. When I was younger I was more timid, now it's like - I don't care, I do what I want. I just wish I could regularly do all of it, instead of here and there dipping into it all for just a taste. I can't commit to everything and that is frustrating. There isn't enough time and energy and other required facilities. I'm going to die some day!
(I don't know why I typed that last exclamation)

Embarresed? Aren't you old enough to be past that yet? How can you be so physically drained and in your 20s? Surfing and rock climbing is for all ages. Granted, ballet is for the young and fragile who have been on their toes since 2 but so what? That Brazilian kungfu waltzing thing looks like it would require some time. But heck, I'm sure all of those people in those pictures have jobs to work around.
I'm glad a picture of Applebee's isnt up there.

Maybe don't let age determine what you can/can't do--let your knees determine that. :D
(Until I came to these particular boards, I never, ever thought about age. No one ever mentioned age to me except to say that I looked younger than I am. Here, though, I get the distinct sense lots of times that I don't belong. Sometimes I go away or want to; other times, I just post anyway and say fuck it.
As you get older, I guess people will impose this weird age attitude on you sight unseen--don't compound that by doing it to yourself too. If you feel like doing something and you are being pulled into that thing, I say go for it and don't look back.)

To say that I'm physically drained implies that there was something to drain, at some point. Not the case. Those people have jobs I'm sure but they also probably did it for a long time. I'm not saying I'm not trying to do things, I'm just saying I feel sheepish about wanting to do so many different things, knowing I won't be able to keep them all up as regular parts of my life. I wouldn't be able to say "every week I do each of these things"

My knees and my wet noodle arms. It's not just the age thing. I never thought of myself as the kind of person to do things like this. I convinced myself I was a certain kind of person and I'm usually afraid of failure. Not that I want to talk about it, I'm just saying, in case anyone else feels that way they know what I'm talking about.

Poor Nuzz. You sound so trapped.
But I'm not! I want to do a lot of this fun stuff, that's all. I'm not trying to emphasize my hesitation and regret, I'm just throwing that in there because I do feel that a little, along with this ambition and eagerness to try things.
I would imagine the toughest part about chocolate robotics is not letting the mechanical parts heat up so much that they melt the chocolate. It could be a climate-dictated hobby, like ice sculpting.

You want to do it all and then list excuses on why you can or shouldn't or how it won't be as killer. At least thats how I see it. I'm guilty of it as well.

No that's not what I meant. I want to do it and I do, most of it, a little, or I have. I'm just saying , isn't it too bad that I can't commit seriously to all of it? I want to do different things.
And I was saying that I do feel timid trying things for the first time, or doing things that are challenging. It's scary and embarrassing (and exciting) when you want to do something that looks like fun but you know it will be hard. I'm not saying that's a reason not to try it, that's just part of how I feel about it - although maybe it used to be a reason not to do it, maybe I used to think I wouldn't be able to do it or wouldn't be able to enjoy it, so why try - but I'm not saying that now.

My dad used to have a dinky little motor boat and we'd go out on lakes and rivers. I loved being out on the water but I've never been on a sail boat. They look so pretty and peaceful from a distance, I've heard there's a lot involved in sailing one. It'd be awesome to go out in a bay or something, the gulf of mexico maybe, the mediterranean, sail wherever you want to go and just be out there in the blue and forget everything on land.

nuzzolese you crazy bitch
not only do i perfectly understand every single word and concept you have written in this thread since the first letter youve typed in it, but I also share this...concern? thought? doubt? you look a bit through some of your past and when you get to the time when you were watching the strawberry shortcake cartoon or drinking your chocolate milk while watching your brother play nintendo or when you were lying down on your kitchen floor playing with your dog and your hair all messed up and undone, you sigh, swallow and just for a mellancholic second think those hours couldve been you practicing for drum lessons, or preparing your voice for choir, or painting your 18th painting for art class on weekends...the thing is...by now...we´d be basically professional drummers or have an inmense number of concerts we´d have sang at or have to direct our friends with a "nono! thats not my bedroom, thats the painting room, its a little further down". we´d have a history and it would be part of our lives, part of our past and our present and something we´d most probably continue on (partially or not) for the rest of our lives. it would be part of who i am, part of who you are.
theres something about doing something since you were a kid, it defines you more deeply as opposed to discovering an interest when youre already an adult. because, as nuzz said, this is not a complaint or a setback, its just recognizing that is has a whole different meaning. the spark of interest we get as adults has a more superficial maybe lighter side to it. because, unless its something you will fully dedicate yourself to (which is, at this stage, difficult, since were already working, already probably guided to a path in life) it will most likely turn into that ugly little word....that almost insulting, sad, little word that is like a failed passion, a secondary almost meaningless interest, its one of those rubber balls we squeeze to de-stress: a hobby. what is a hobby? a failed atempt to something that could have been something grander? hobbies cringe when they hear of careers and proffesionalism...they take out their handkerchiefs and blow their nose, pretending to be sneezing when theyre really letting some tiny tears drop from their eyes. there goes careers and proffesionalism, real high and mighty, shining from commitment, dedication, history. the hobbies get their motivation from them, cursing the past and justifying whats left, the future.
the beggining is more magical, more beautiful, more fitting, more meaningful, in the beggining.
but its not about not having done anything ever, not having been interested in anything ever before...its about having more than one passion, its about taking advantage of your fucking life and not being statisfied easily, its about having a thirst for emotion. its about not being able to sit in your seat without fidgeting. and you know what nuzz, this is what differenciates how were supposed to be and how were not supposed to be in life. and if this is going on in it, this concern, its a plus, a big fat heavy plus so big its hard to carry.

Zippo you're a damn genius. That was amazing. I wish I had been able to say all of that, wish I could write that way. You are so poetically articulate. I know what you mean.
