If Bush were less well-connected, he would be placed on trial for negligent homicide for his mishandling of Katrina. After all, he appointed a completely unqualified individual (Michael Brown) to head FEMA, an organization incorporated under the Department of Homeland Security, responsible for the safety of nearly 300 million people.

Does prosecution sound extreme? Consider this...

Suppose a terrorist called up the White House and made a substantiated threat to wait three days, then drop a bomb on New Orleans that would virtually wipe the city out. If Katrina is indicative of the federal response to national emergencies, the government would have failed (through indifference, malice, or a combination of these) to save the hundred thousand residents who were too poor, elderly, or disabled to evacuate themselves - even with three days warning.

As a Texan who suffered through four MORE years of a Bush governorship, I'm not sitting too easy right now, with a category five Hurricane churning in the Gulf, headed straight toward Galveston.

Who would have thought the right-wing zealots, the self-proclaimed followers of Jesus would turn out to be social Darwinists? Who would have thought the flag-lapel patriots would turn out to be incompetent idiots?

Mark my words: Katrina will prove to be the downfall of the Republican administration.

Yo, that would be me.

It would be alot more people than just Bush that would be up the creek if your proposal were to be executed.

Yes, and Bush would be among them. Democrat officials too. I'm not a partisan - I'm fiercely independent. I like it that way. It makes my vote count more than it otherwise would. I pull more sway with politicians (because they are all concerned about winning my vote).

Who wants "independents?" Can't make up your mind which way to vote? Call yourself "independent." Feh....

I always make up my mind who to vote for. I just don't base my vote on party lines, but issues.

BTW, my wife went to school at North Texas (saw you were in Denton, which she always mentions).

How are things there? I'll let her know that her liberal heart can still be proud of you carrying on the fight (for independents, if that's the term you choose to label yourself with).

Issues are all well and fine to base your vote on, but at the end it comes down to the choice between Demos or Republicans (if you vote any other way, you're wasting your vote), so why not join a party and effect change from within the system instead of always agitating out in the cold?

Homer:
........America, take a good look at your beloved candidates. They're nothing but hideous space reptiles.
........[unmasks them]
........[audience gasps in terror]
Kodos:
........It's true, we are aliens. But what are you going to do about it? It's a two-party system; you have to vote for one of us.
........[murmurs]
Man1:
........He's right, this is a two-party system.
Man2:
........Well, I believe I'll vote for a third-party candidate.
Kang:
........Go ahead, throw your vote away.
........[Kang and Kodos laugh out loud]
........[Ross Perot smashes his "Perot 96" hat]

One problem. I can't in good conscience vote for ANYBODY who doesn't want me to even have the right to vote for them, who would rather see me (and my friends and family members) in jail for smoking cannabis (like your wife, I'm mean green - she'll know what I'm talking about). Unfortunately, that disqualifies many (not all) Republicans and Democrats from receiving my vote.

You can let your wife know that things are fine in Denton and at UNT. Ask her if she ever attended the Fry St. Fair. Tell her to check out the site for my new novel, JUNK (http://www.waronjunk.com), which is set in Denton (and will be pitched to Oliver Stone and Robert Altman, among a few others, this spring).

Cool deal. Thanks for the update. I'll let her know.

BTW, just because I'm a true-blue conservative doesn't mean I don't know what mean green is... :D
