either way unless it fizzles out significantly which at the very best will downgrade to maybe a 4 or 3, it will fuck shit up. Its all just a matter of how much shit.

Theres tons of offshore oil rigs in texas, the possible damage it could cause would make Katrina look kind of tame in comparison, scarily enough.

Cyclone? Now there is an obscure natural disaster. I think they get them in the midwest United States.

Hurricanes are mean and nasty. I holed up through two Cat 3s within a three week period last year. My house was damaged and took almost 8 months to fix. The hurricane season is part of life in South Florida and southern coastal regions. I do know that I would be heading north away from this Rita bitch. My house was built to hurricane code and supposedly can withstand a Cat 4 to Cat 5. I don't think I would hangout to see.

We get tornados in the midwest (a la the Wizard of Oz).

I think cyclones are pretty much hurricanes, but in the Pacific Ocean (aka tropical rotating storms).

(Some people say a cyclone is any storm that rotates in a circle and thus a hurricane and a tornado are cyclones. My junior high school science teacher would say that those people are wrong.)

Actually, it's a class 4 that has the ability to strengthen to a 5, or fizzle down to a class 3. Where did you hear it was the third strongest hurricane ever recorded? It says here (http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/reports/mitch/mitch.html) that there have been quite a few others that were stronger. Off the top of my head, Mitch, Andrew, Katrina, Camille, Linda, and Gilbert were all pretty horrible hurricanes, moreso than this one.

What bothers me is that I saw on the news today some stubborn assholes who say "they've lived in their houses their whole lives and refuse to leave." I like how the governor of Louisiana told them to write their social security numbers on their arms so their bodies can be easily identified among the wreckage.

actually yeah i've lived thru a cyclone up in townsville in northern queensland. And a few days ago on the news the hurricane was only suppose to be a caterogy 2 now it's apparantly a catergory 5. i wonder why that is? Overhyping? or does america have some retarded meteorologists?

natural disasters occur in the world all the time, but if it happens in america then OMG IT'S THE WORST THING EVER!!! And what happened with hurricane katrina is being compared by americans to the tsunami! WTF? a fucking handful of people died from katrina compared to the fucking tsunami. Trust the american media to over hype something like that. If Katrina happened in any 3rd world country instead, most americans wouldn't give a shit and you fucking know it because it's not news worthy to you ppl.

I agree with the over-hyping. Every news commercial is "WILL RITA RAISE YOUR GAS PRICES?" Ophelia wasn't even that much of a hurricane, but since it came after Katrina, all the news sources said "Will Ophelia be the next Katrina? Is North Carolina going to get slammed? Will they have to evacuate? Are they prepared?" If Katrina didn't happen, no one would have given half a shit about Ophelia. Hurricanes happen all the time, but now people freak out about them because the last one was horrible. Just like after 9/11. All of the sudden, everyone's afraid of terrorism happening to them, though the chances of it happening again on such a scale was slim to none.

But with that being said, though the media has been hyping the last few tropical storms/hurricanes, this one does look to be pretty bad. It won't do as much damage as Katrina, but it's still not something to be scoffed at.

If Katrina happened in any 3rd world country instead, most americans wouldn't give a shit and you fucking know it because it's not news worthy to you ppl.

I don't agree with that one bit. We all were very concerned about the tsunami over here, and gave a lot of aid. We're not all monsters, we have the ability to open our hearts and our wallets when our fellow man needs it.

I agree that the tsunami comparison makes me cringe. But a smaller body count doesn't mean it isn't a serious natural disaster. Thank goodness that with a hurricane there is more warning and the vast majority of people evacuate.

[QUOTE=Documad]I agree that the tsunami comparison makes me cringe. QUOTE]

thank you. what really pisses me off is all these out of proportion comparisons. of course you'd be aware of the tsunami, because a couple of hundred thousand ppl died compared to a couple of hundred. big fucking difference. if the same amount ppl died in the tsunami as hurricane katrina, it'd be barely newsworthy in the states.

another thing on the over blown comparisons. i was reading a book a while ago about the 13 most evil men of all time and osama bin laden was named in the list. i mean sure he's bad but WTF?! most evil people of all time?! this is over hyped bullshit. here's osama, only in the list coz he killed 3000 americans, along with ppl like Torquemada who was responsible for erradicating all the jews in spain in the 14th century, Vlad the Impaler who left a "surprise" for the Turks of 20000 of their country men impaled in a valley, and others like Stalin and Hitler. You serious cant compare osama to these ppl. You know the only reason why he's in the list.........

This really pisses me off. there's so much american propaganda in the world today and something has to be done about it. It brings me shame that i live in a country who's prime minister blindly follows any order by that fucking retard old Dubya

the body count may not be compatable "only" 700 or so died, but the property damage is a close comparison. If there was no warning, like the tsunami, there would have been hundreds of thousands dead.

Lives are more important, in my opinion, than property. The fact that the tsunami and the hurricane may be similar in economic costs really is a weak argument to me.

The people were not killed but there lives were effectively destroyed. They lost all their belongings, and many were too poor to have insurance, so now they have nothing and nowhere to go, and what little is being done for them is not enough. The fact that lives are more impotrant that property is not my point, that's a given, the point is the scope of the disaster and how many people were affected and will continue to be affected for years IS comparable.

My original post quoting mr icy hot stunna was because he seems to think that it is "over hyped american bullshit", like this wasn't a horrific tragedy.

I will agree however that the media in general sensationalizes everything for ratings, but if he is watching in Brisbane, then the Australian media is just as guilty.

As of Friday morning.....

I just saw a breaking story on CNN. The levee is being breached in New Orleans. The hurricane has not even arrived and the water has risen over the walls. It is pouring into the 9th ward.

I cannot believe that people have been in traffic for 24 hours and only traveled 40 minutes. It sounds scary and miserable. My thoughts are with the people of Louisiana and Texas.

those were all deadlier, you listed the deadliest storms, not the most powerful...

on September 21st, Rita was at its strongest...
"Fueled by the warm late-summer waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Rita exploded overnight into the third-most powerful hurricane on record for the Atlantic Basin.

As of 5 a.m. today the hurricane's strongest winds were blowing at 175 miles an hour (280 kilometers an hour) and the barometric pressure at the storm's center had fallen to 26.51 inches, or 897 millibars."

I'm talking about a hurricane churning in the gulf waters 300 miles wide!!!

dont be so dense!

it is not the meteorologists fault the hurricane gained intensity!! this is not some weather conspiracy theory. did you live through Hurricane Alicia, Andrew, Dennis, charley?? these were devastating storms that have left hundreds of thousands with nothing. again, have you been oblivious to the devastation of New Orleans?

An Entire American CIty has been unpopulated by a storm and subsequent flood and this is overhyped??

by the way, the city of New Orleans is still in danger of severe flooding, as they are feeling tropical storm force winds.

A bus caught fire and exploded early Friday on a crowded Texas interstate, killing as many as 24 people who were fleeing ahead of Hurricane Rita.

The bus, carrying about 45 elderly evacuees, burst into flames on Interstate 45 south of Dallas. It pulled over and people were getting off when a series of explosions ripped through the bus.

Dallas County Sheriff's Sgt. Don Peritz said 14 or 15 people got off the bus and said as many as 24 people may have died.

meanwhile

Water was flowing over the industrial canal levee in New Orleans triggering new flooding in the low-lying 9th Ward neighborhood.

While the Army Corps of Engineers expected flooding from Rita, it was not anticipated this early.

Mitch Frazier, a spokesman for the corps, said it was not clear if the flooding was caused by rain or a storm surge.

"We don't know, likely a little of both," he said. A CNN photojournalist reported that the water was rising quickly and was already at least two feet deep.

Officials started closing the flood gates around Lake Pontchartrain Thursday morning in preparation for Rita.

More than 1,000 deaths, most in Louisiana, are blamed on Hurricane Katrina, which struck August 29 after slamming Florida a few days earlier.

But they were also either category 4 or 5. Rita is now a class-3. I guess maybe at one point she could have been recorded as the third most powerful, but I doubt she is at this point.

a cyclone or typhoon is the same thing as a hurricane, its just the pacific ocean naming convention. Since the pacific side of the US is too cold for typhoon activities, we never hear anyone say anything but hurricane.

at this point the storm is a category 3 and will most likely weaken to 2 or 1 by the time it hits land but it wont dissapate as fast as Katrina did. There will be a lot of flooding in that region and sadly a lot of the repairwork done to NO after Katrina will be a wasted effort and have to all be redone, assuming the entire city isnt completely flooded.
