The above link has a fairly balanced view of the current conundrum for both Democrats and Republicans as we face the current crises of the hurricanes and Bush's approval/disapproval ratings.

Interestingly, the article premises much of its analysis on the lack of single-voiced leadership on the Democrats' side.

This led me to wondering : who WILL step up and lead the Demos into the 2006 Congressional elections, and, more importantly, the 2008 elections? What is the strategy, besides straightforward Bush-bashing? I especially liked Begala's comment lifted from Napoleon : "when you're enemy is destroying himself, just sit back" (I may have paraphrased a bit ;) )

Anyone want to bandy this about?

I think the Democrats need to get rid of the centrist/conservatives and let Howard Dean and Barack Obama get shit done.

Republican-lite won't cut it.

Do you really think Dean and Obama have an agenda they can sell to the American people and change the course of the country? If so, what is that agenda? Can you summarize it with enough detail so that it is not just broad generalizations, but includes some detail enumerating the vision they'd like to accomplish?

i think it's "never interrupt your enemy when he's making a mistake"

only he probably said it in french, so maybe it translates differently

No, you're probably right. Like I said, I paraphrased it.

Anyhow, so you think the Demos can just sit back and the electorate will flock to them because they are the "not-Republicans?"

Hmmm.....interesting theory, but I don't buy it.

Bashing your opponant didn't work in the last election so the Dems are going to do something different.

I think the opposite, and I fully agree with Howard Dean's statement that Democrats need a candidate who shares the views of the pro-life.

Because most Americans polled at ontheissues.org are neither left-wing nor right-wing but populist. Liberal is not the Democratic party. Populist is. It's just been hijacked by liberals. If the Democrats would go populist or even centrist the liberals could vote green. The greens would get more votes and the Democrats would get more votes and everyone would be happy. Even Republicans would be happy since they are closer to populist/centrist. And if there's anything I've learned from Bush maybe it's that making the other party happy should be important.

If you insist on the pro-abortion policy as your issue that you will vote on I think you are being selfish to all the religious people who feel that their life's worth hangs on the line in how many abortions there are. Now I'm saying there's a difference between pro-choice and pro-abortion so don't get mad. Pro-choice should do things like help with adoptions and educate women on contraception and maybe even release the pill... abortions could be cut 95% in 10 years and Democrats would be praised... but no! Democrats don't want pro-choice or responsible choice they want to fund the abortions. I mean get a life you know how sacred Republicans hold tax-payer money and how evil they would think government was if they were funding abortions.

So give me a populist or a centrist... they can be all for bigger health care and education and protecting the environment and that's exactly what I'm looking for, and I hope they will fight corruption, but please, like Howard Dean said, share views with the pro-life and anti-gay-marriage. And for good reason... a moral decay in the citizens is worse than a moral decay in the white house. I'm personally glad the FBI now has a porn patrol.
