I walk around 20 mile a week cus I don't like to do pointless car journeys. Only time I run is when I want get out of breath cus I'm pissed off about something or throwing a fit and need to kill energy.
Running a lot hurts my knee joints. I prefer to swim a lot (I only do about 5 miles a week though), which is great cus you exercise everything and you are supported in the water. Great for the slightest injury, it really helps strengthen it (y)

used to run all the time in high school, but since ive graduated, i never do it...
i can't get motivated enough to go out on my own and just run anymore. but i don't mind running around playing a game or something of that idea
i want to get myself a bike so that i can bike to school every day and then hopefully expand that into some trail riding and use that to get into better shape

i definetly am going to do it, but the crummy part about it is by the time i get the time and money to get to the shop and figure out what i want and then actually buy it, there will be snow on the ground and i wont be able to really ride it as much.
plus, i worry about thievery, because i will have to lock it up in the hallway of the apartment building, and even though there is a camera, im just weary because my last 2 bikes were also stolen...

i live in an apartment. rollerblading is the best option for me. i've gotten into shape this summer by rollerblading EVERYWHERE. i do it everyday, but if i haven't gotten the chance, i'll do it at night before going to sleep. good fun

^^^don't drink and run.
I run 3/4 of the year. This morning walking down to the gym, I realized that the city's 10K race was happening today. The course runs about 1/2 a block past my house. I thought about just jumping in but I couldn't get hold of the people I was meeting for lunch in time to tell them not to expect me.
So I run a lot during those months when the weather is kind and where I won't risk slipping on snow/ice. If I'm training for a long race, my base miles will be somewhere around 50. If I'm not training for a race, then my base miles are maybe 25-30 and I supplement those with going to the gym several times a week.

I love to walk too--not power walk, just walk (for no reason or just for transportation). I see the sights better when I walk (v. when I run), and walking helps me to think about stuff that's in my head that I didn't even know was in there. To me, walking & running serve very different purposes.

My friend and I always go for lovely walks with her dog. We took her to a baseball field and found a bunch of four leaf clovers.
I love walking home from school at 9pm. I'm tired but the darkness and cool air is very serene.

how could you miss the great race!! its only the biggest annual race ever!
ps: i prefer to just lay down and stare into space when i need to clear my thoughts. allthough walking does help as well...It's a nasty race to run. Not the course--the course is easy. What's nasty are a lot of the other runners--a lot of them aren't runners or haven't been runners for long and that makes it dangerous on the downhills when they zoom around trying to make up time. I don't generally like that race, but I was in the mood for it or something like it this morning. I do like to watch the ROTC people doing their in-formation running. I miss the marathon.
I love to stare into space too--literally. Go out on a clear night and find a good spot and maybe fall asleep looking out like that. A friend of mine has a cottage almost in the country and without the ambient light, you can see so deeply into the sky. It's like camping but it's nearly in the city. I love to go there and wake up at 2am, wander around outside, look up and then see the milky way. It always floors me.

Or whatever it's called and that people still do a lot of. Not that rolling silly thing from the 80s, zorra, but I was referring to that fast neighborhood walking that is done, I presume, mostly for aerobic conditioning. I don't like that style of walking because I can't see the sights that way.

I didn't like running at first either. In fact, I hated it until a bf pushed me to do it because it got us to the gym faster. He taught me how to work through the first couple of miles and once I understood the mechanics of that, I tolerated it. I didn't like it.
Awhile later, I found myself in California, without a gym. Then, I ran semi-seriously, but only to maintain aerobic conditioning. I still hadn't fallen for running.
I got all-out serious about it when I became more disciplined and approached running as a sport instead of using it as something to help me stay in shape. I trained hard and started bumping up my miles gradually and then started using smaller 5- and 10-K races as preparation for longer and more diverse & challenging races. Putting myself through those training regimens helped me to learn a lot about myself and how to get myself through very hard aspects of life. Really, you can get that lesson from any sort of physical/endurance type of training. For me, it happened to be running.
My favorites races have been the Marine Corps Marathon, the City to Surf in Sydney, and the bits of the Pittsburgh Marathon that I've done. I've also enjoyed some half-marathons and smaller events that are offered in the area and states around me.
At a point, I stopped registering for races--I jump in on one when I need it. That means that I practice racing in a crowd (which I need periodically) and I leave behind the stuff that I don't need (the tee shirt, the medal).
Over the years, I ran so many races that I had enough race shirts to make several quilts from them--I never did that, but I felt the need to do something with them. I stopped thinking about it and in time, I realized that most of those shirts found their way into my son's running clothes rotation. :p He runs a mean mile.

nice. i try and run year round. i don't mind the cold at all, but as you pointed out the ice and snow really suck. my max mileage is about 25 miles per week, which is perfect for me. i'm not looking to compete in races, but rather use my running as a form of cardio to go along with my lifting.

My school was pretty hardcore with its phys ed program. They used to make us do a different run every week. One was this 900 metre or so run that was over uneven gravel with lots of ups and downs around our main sports ovals. I think my best time was in the low 3 minutes, but there were freaks that could do it in just over 2 mins no worries, and on the other end of the scale there were the really obese kids who took 8 minutes :(. Then we had to do regular 1500 metre, 3000 metre, 5000 metre and a once yearly 10 km run, and a once yearly triathlon. The 5000 metre one was the worst, because the road wasn't sealed, there was a massive hill that was rediculously steep. Sports teachers were barking at you the whole way to keep going...if it rained we had to keep going whilst the unsealed, steep road turned into a river. So yeah, thats kinda scarred me from running for a while.
Also, we did a bike touring camp where we had to ride 450 km in 3 1/2 days. Good times (n). Coming down the black spur in rain and wind, with my back brake out because the "bike expert" in our group put my wheel back on wrong after a puncture (i'd never used a road bike before), going at about 80-100 km an hour without pedalling, zooming past cars and shit...thats probably the scariest shit i've ever done.
