I don't know much about the following bands but would like to start listening to them. Let me know which albums you think represent their work the best for a listener who is totally new to them.

Echo & the Bunnymen
Belle and Sebastian
Stereolab

Also, has anyone listened to that Transplants cd? Is it any good?

In terms of Stereolab, I'd go for Switched On (http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=17989).

Belle and Sebastian I'd go with Dear Catastrophe Waitress. But you really can't go wrong with B and S.

DON'T GO WITH DEAR CATASTROPHE WAITRESS! it doesn't sound anything like what they really sound like.

From Echo and the Bunnymen I also recommend their Songs to learn and sing.
Belle and Sebastian - Tigermilk (even tho The boy with the Arab Strap is rather good as well)

stereolab- emperor tomato ketchup

belle and sebastian- if you're feeling sinister, then tigermilk. Don't get boy with the arab strap, it's dull.
