Nice guess. No. And I appreciate you not googling. It's too easy. Think it through and see if you can really figure it out without cheating.....

Hmmm, not sure. Thing is that numerous internationa companies get their crude oil from a number of areas. So numerous "suppliers" from various countries might all get their oil from the same nation. Obfuscating the answer.

I'm not giving any hints. Maybe or maybe not. Try to logically track it down. It may be the one you always expect it to be or it could be a trick question. All of the choices are viable to one extent or another, except for two.
That might be even more fun to try and logically think through : which two are NOT even oil exporters on the list above? Reason it out. Share your reasonings on both queries if you'd like. I'd love to see how people think through this particular issue because it says alot about....oooppsss....I almost gave it away.... :D

I'm talking simple supply and demand. Largest supplier period from a particular country, regardless of international ownership issues, etc.

Yep.
Good guess. How did you arrive at that?
Also, do you know which two on my list do NOT export oil to the US?

i knew they were a big producer, and i figured the US would get more from the place closest to them. makes sense. i was also thinking mexico.

True story.
Most people, admit it, would probably think of Iraq or Saudi Arabia, because that is what we are EXPECTED to believe.
Guess what else? Shhh....don't tell any of your Left friends, but the Canadian oil does NOT come through Halliburton or any of Bush's cronies.
Keep it on the DL, though, cuz you know the cowboy and his puppeteer will get wind of it and Halliburton will be put in charge of it! ;)

i was also thinking mexico.
Mexico's a big one, but they mostly produce for domestic consumption, with not a lot of net exporting. Pemex is a HUGE conglomeration and has a nationalistic-like hold over Mexico's domestic and foreign production.
Guess what again? Shhh.....Halliburton's not involved with them either....

This has a cool map showing all the major exporters to the US in 2002.

Of course it's Canada, and you may note that we've been polite enough (naturally) not to impose illegal tariffs on the crude. Perhaps you could convince your politicans to return the favour.

Norway! I bet it's Norway! I know they have oil off their coast, and they're the only "Holy crap no way it's them" country on the list.
I bet it's those crazy Norwegies.
Edit: I just read the rest of the thread. I have no patience to read through responses most of the time, before I respond.
I still say Norway.

That's no surprise. I come from Alberta, the oil capital of Canada. Very akin to Texas (we're cowboys, conservatives, hate the federal government and hate gun registration ;) ).
And we got so much oil, we're swimming in it, baby. I wash my hair with oil, drink oil juice and bathe in it. I'm LOVIN' it, baby!

Dear Brett,
Please send me free oil. I need to commute to campus, and stealing the neighbor's gas isn't doing it for me.
Sincerely,
The Management

That was actually some really good guesswork, but thanks!
I just had this intuition and feeling that Israel and Algeria weren't exporting oil to the U.S. (is this because they're not oil-producing nations?), a gut instinct, if you will.

Yep. Neither has any real oil reserves (known) at this time or in the past. Who knows in the future? Maybe God has a sense of humor and the "land of milk and honey" will someday be the land of "black gold" (as they used to say on the Beverly Hillbillies).
Anyhow, just out of curiosity, what was your first instinct as to which country it was? I'm betting you thought Saudi Arabia or Iraq, because that is what is beaten into us on a daily basis by the media. The quiet, good Canadian oil is not a sexy subject, however, so they'll go on to prattling about how the "war is for oil." Posh!

Instinct for which country exports most oil?
Well, I was pretty sure it was Canada from the get-go. Being that I'm awash in oil country and that we do indeed give LOTS of oil to America, I knew we had to be #1 (or somewhere really close). If it wasn't Canada, I'd have thought Saudi Arabia, probably.

I think the US gets almost all of it's natural gass from Canada, does this include petroleum?
they'll go on to prattling about how the "war is for oil." Posh!Or the Petrodollar (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?goto=lastpost&t=57468)! Twaddle!!! Why on earth would the US be worried about oil-producing countries flushing their dollar reserves for euros and selling their oil in that currency? Something to do with owing 6% of GDP to the rest of the world, maybe?

Ali, I know we talked about the whole petrodollar thing before.
I couldn't remember which thread it was in, but you cited an article and we went back and forth on the efficacy of the data, where I said the author actually admitted the unlikelihood of the world going onto the euro over the dollar and you felt he argued just the opposite.
This was back when we were sniping at each other and before I grew a thicker skin over things, remember?
Anyhow, I still think the whole switchover from the dollar to the euro as a means of pegging the price of oil ain't goning to happen anyways, and I'm sure you thing that boogeyman is still valid, so....
Why don't we just agree to disagree, as it is still tied to the dollar, not the euro, and is not likely to change any time soon, ok?
