View Full Version : EDUCATION in post-2001 'ROCK' MUSIC...........

Have not...
bought a cd, watched much mtv, purchased an mp3, listened to much music on the radio, gone to any concerts* or genuinely & attentively listened to any live bands that may've been playing at places i've been
... since 2001.
(about)
haven't really listened to music the way i used to since, like, forever it seems,
other than music i've been obligated to listen to, havent paid much attention to newer stuff since i graduated from college, put down the guitar and started working. i've lost track of rock... i've listened to a lot of hip hop for the beats but hardly any rock post 2001. it seems pretty repetitive and gratuitously fashionandshit. i've collected eleven kajillion gigs of music from friends' hard drives but i haven't even begun to listen to ninety-nine percent of it. where does one start?
WHAT IS ROCK MUSIC, 2001-2005?
* gone to concerts, but just to see 'pre-2001' bands, mostly i think sort of, yeah no this has nothing to do with 9/11

Yeah, but he may not have been aware of them BEFORE 2001. I deliberately chose groups who didn't get a higher profile until "post-2001" (and even the ones who had stuff before '01, it wasn't by much).

who's sandy?
ok - here's a dumb question... is emo just a fashion thing? how does it cross over into music? isn't it just dudes playing rock while they cry about what losers they are or some shit?

Why did you people say Kaiser Chiefs? Do I really have to get there early enough to see them on Sunday? Because if so, it will be a great, big pain.

Emo is tough to pin down because of its constant evolution. Yes, there's the whole fashion angle, but it's also a style of music.
Emo derived from the hardcore punk scene of the '80s in Washington DC. Artists chose to apply a little bit of melody and, yes, sensitivity into hardcore (think of Dischord Records' output with bands like Rites of Spring).
In the '90s it expanded into a more poppy, indie-ish type of thing (Sunny Day Real Estate being the de facto trendsetter).
Now emo does get a lot of criticism (and rightly so) for being too "whiney" or "wussy." Yes, the vast majority of emo groups are not worth your time (and most of the shitty emo is from the last few years), but don't be deceived by the shittyness of Dashboard Confessional, there is indeed some good stuff to be had if you're at all interested.
Currently, emo has all but devolved (with only a few notable exceptions) into dumb high school kids with horrible hair cuts and they all think The Used is rad.
As a side note, the vast majority of emo (or emo-related) bands will never ever ever say they're an emo group (whether this label is accurate or not). They'll usually say they're a "melodic punk band" (which is code for emo).
The history of emo is kinda convoluted and almost any current emo band will bear little to no relation to the bands from the '80s and '90s who spearheaded the genre, so that's why it's a lot easier for people to just outright dismiss it and go: "Just a bunch of whiney loser crap about how they can't get girls" etc.

I have to agree... Black Rebel Motorcycle are a fantastic band.
Hmm, The Cure released an album last year. Depeche Mode is releasing one next month. Neil Young released one last month, but I haven't heard anything from it, so I can't say whether or not it's worth listening to.
Since you haven't been paying attention to the media, you might just enjoy The Killers. I know a lot of people who hate them now because they've been overplayed so much.
U2 released an album recently. This year or last year? However... there are a lot of people who like it and a lot of people who hate it. So it could be good album or a bad album... It just depends which way you swing. So far I like it.
I honestly can't think of a lot. I listen to mostly old stuff.
