That's exactly what the motherfucker said to me. So me and my friend Rob walk over to the car and the fun begins. We were made to sit on the edge of the curb, answer belittling and degrading questions like, " What's your drug of choice, Darkie? Rocks (crack) or blows (heroin)?(Rob is extremely dark skinned. Neither one of us do drugs, btw.) We were made to verbally list all of our arrests (which I have no problem with except for the fact that the cop insisted on sitting in his car and making us sit on the curb which was at least a good five feet away so we practically had to yell our personal business all up and down the fucking block. Completely unnecessary.) We had to take off our shoes and hold them upside down and knock them together and hold our socks by the toes and shake them (in case anything should fall out.) We were repeatedly accused of walking around casing the neighborhood. This motherfucker insisted that were out stealing power tools. He asks me, "What's your tool of choice, taco? ( I look Hispanic). DeWalt? Black and Decker? Mikita?" So on and so forth.

It continued on this way for a good fifteen minutes all the while people are walking up and down Webster Street looking at me and my boy like were criminals. (Save the jokes, adam. Not in the mood today.)

I swear on my daughters eyes we were doing absolutely nothing but walking down the street. That's it. Two minorities in a predominantly all white neighborhood. Which made it all the more strange since Rob and I have been running around Lincoln Park for ten years, ever since we've known each other and we have never had this happen. Never. I mean, this shit has happened to both of us before but never in Lincoln Park. This shit would happen to us in the 'hood. That's why we would go into Lincoln Park sometimes. To get a break from all the bullshit. We've never had a problem like this before in that neighborhood.

They ran our names to see if we had warrants and all this other bullshit and when nothing came up on either one of us he decides to get on the radio and call another car. Why? I still don't know.

The second car shows up about five minutes later. A guy and a chick. The guy gets out and as if this situation was not bad enough, this guy turns out to be someone who has arrested me in the past. But he actually turned out to be pretty cool this time around. It was the first cop that was a real obnoxious dickhead.

Now, I am going to say something that no one, and I mean no one is gonna believe.

That was the second time were stopped by the police today. I swear I am not making this shit up.

The first time we were stopped by three bicycle cops but they were cool. They just ran us and let us go. That happened one block away from where were stopped by the dickhead. I found out later on that a bank in the neighborhood was robbed on Monday so apparantly the cops on that beat got their asses chewed on and they were out looking for other people to shit on. Shit rolls downhill as they say.

I was pissed. I still am. I wanted to open my mouth and tell that cop to fuck off, which I have done in the past but Rob and I both knew that if we started talking shit and standing up for ourselves the dickhead would have handcuffed us and put a case on us (read: made up some bullshit story as to why we were arrested.) My probation judge made it very clear that if I wound up in his courtroom one more time on a case he would send me to County. So I had no choice but to keep my mouth shut. That ate me up inside.

I want to make it very clear that I am in no way trying to jump on the race card. The cops in that neighborhood for the most part are not racist. Some of the people are but the cops are usually alright. It was just this one fucking guy.

Like I said, me and my boy have been running around that neighborhood together for the last ten years and separatley for longer than that. Rob went to highschool half a block away from where the bike cops stopped us. (Side note: He went to school with Freddy Rodriguez from Six Feet Under.)

I think this guy was just pissed that the watch commander tore him and everyone else on the beat a new asshole because of the bank robbery. Now, banks get robbed all the time and when it's in a mediocre middle class neighborhood it's a big fucking deal. But when it's in a super upperclass neighborhood with multimillion dollar mansions and people paying more in property taxes per year than most of us will make in the next three years then it becomes a big fucking deal. Beth, I could not risk walking away from this guy. These fuckers here in Chicago will put a case on you like they are tying their shoes and I mean that seriously. They will have no qualms about writing up a report that says they saw me and Rob acting suspiciously so they stopped us and found three dime bags of crack in my pocket (which they will supply, of course). And there it is.... a felony arrest. Now, it will probably get thrown out of court for non probable cause but guess what? i will have to sit in County until my court date comes up which could be anytime between next week and the end of the year.

And after all that, I get to go see my probation judge because I've been arrested again, for a felony no less. It won't matter to him the case was thrown out. The simple fact that I had been arrested again is how he would look at it and I would go back to County for violation of probation.

I know it sounds like I've got a vivid imagination and I'm probably taking this a little too far but I've seen it happen. Several times. It was a risk that I just couldn't take. I've had a cop (in the past) put me up against the car and tell me that if I tried to run "I'll put a hundred bags on you and give you a warrant." (read: he'll write a report that says he caught me with 100 dime bags of crack and that I had a warrant out for my arrest for something else.) Do you have any idea how long I would be in jail? And that's before they ship me off to the pen.

There was nothing I could do. And that's what's still burning me up seven hours later.

Like I said before, this was an isolated incident. You live in Chicago, Laver, and I'm sure that you are familiar with Lincoln Park. You know yourself that, yeah, some of the people can be a little uppity now and again but it is by far what I would call a racist neighborhood. If it was like that I wouldn't be there all the time. I used to live in Lincoln Park. Now I live in Lakeview just north of it. And the cops, as I've said, are pretty good in LP. It was just this one guy.

What irritated the shit outta me is that everytime some people came down the street he would start talking real fucking loud so they could hear. He would say "My job is to protect the people of this neighborhood from boosters like you. and I work for the residents of Lincoln Park. They don't like boosters and neither do I." He kept calling me a fucking 'booster'. From now on everytime I hear that word I'm gonna think of my buddy the dickhead. If you were someone walking down the street it would appear that the local beat cop is a hardworking, nose to the grindstone, always gets his man enforcer of the law who is protecting you, your family and your home. It would make you feel damn good to know that your tax dollars are hard at work keeping riff raff out of the neigborhood. Smoke and mirrors, man, smoke and mirrors.

Puppets. That's all we were for that fucking cop. Nothing but puppets. He was putting on a little show and were the unwilling participants.

He kept banging on that power tool bullshit. That lead me to believe that there has been a rash of power tools disappearing from garages on his beat and he's been getting his ass creamed from his sarge and everyone else on up the line. He's got to make it look good for the people who live there; make them think that action is being taken.

It wasn't a minority that robbed that bank on Monday. It was a white guy. He walked in and walked out and nobody paid him any attention. Why? Because he's white. He fits. I would bet both my legs that it's a white guy doing the power tools, too, and I think this for the simple fact that while Lincoln Park, for the most part, is a pretty chill neighborhood there is no way in hell that a minority would be able to walk two blocks with anykind of large power tools without someone getting on their cell phone. I'm not steroetyping white people but it's just an honest fact.

About seven years ago I had a neighbor that was moving to Minnesota and she wanted to get rid of as much shit as she could so she gave me her TV. I went to go get it (she lived three blocks away from me). Do you know that I did not make it home with that TV without getting stopped? I remember a black guy I used to work with telling me one day about how he was coming from the driving range on Diversey Harbor with his clubs and he was thrown on the hood of a cop car and asked repeatedly where he stole the golf clubs from........because, you know, black people couldn't possibly play golf.

I think what fucks with me the most about this whole situation is the fact that I was used to make someone else appear to be doing his job. I was put out on display for all to look at and nod their heads and say "Serves you right. Good job, officer." No one actually said that but I know that's what some of the people walking by were thinking. If this fat fuck had been doing his job from the begenning shit wouldn't be missing right now. He got comfortable. He got lax. Lincoln Park is a pretty easy neighborhood. Not alot of major crime. It's one of those assignments that cops drool for. Now fat boy was probably threatened with an assignment in the fucking 'hood if he didn't get his shit together and it scared the hell outta him. In the 'hood? Oh, hell no. That means I'll have to do some real fucking work. Can't have that. Naw. Nope. No way.

You know what the kicker is? This guy probably isn't even racist. Seriously. Like I said he was putting on a show for the people. A puppeteer. There was some fleeing, and it transpires they were drug-dealers down from Liverpool, and had been under police surveillance, and this one cop's "spidey sense" had rumbled the whole operation, ending in a less than perfect case.

They still went down though.

3. As I said before, I really don't think this particular thing was really that racially motivated. I think if me and my boy were two scrubby ass looking white kids we also might have been stopped. I think his remarks were more for the people that were in earshot of the whole situation. This dumbass was probably thinking that that's what the onlookers were calling us in their heads so he wanted to form some kind of twisted little bond with them. "Us against them". Thing is, while that neighborhood is a little snooty here and there, I've never, ever heard that kind of shit coming from anyone there. That cop has got some serious, serious issues that need to be worked out. I'll probably be reading about him the papers one day about how he came across the wrong cat and got popped or got caught doing some shady shit and was indicted. Either way, he'll get his eventually.

Well, sometimes, probably 4 out of 10 times, the cops here in Chicago will do the same thing. If they catch you with a spliff, or maybe a few, already rolled, these fuckers here will most likely stick it in their pocket and tell you to get the fuck on down the street. I've seen that happen. They don't really care about shit you have for personal use. Too much gotdamned paperwork for a couple of lousy joints. Now, if you got the weed bagged up individually then it's obvious you are dealing and, depending on the amount, they can hit you not only with possession but also intent to distribute. If they catch some kids drinking in the park they will kick them in the ass and drive them home. They aren't doing paperwork on that, either. Chicago cops don't do any kind of work.

Cops in England are called bobbies, right? When I first heard that the bobbies over there don't carry guns it sounded crazy to me. I remember thinking "How the fuck does that work?" America is such a gun-totin', wild, wild West, shootem-up country, and has been forever, that everyone here is just used to guns all the time everywhere.

i suppose you could argue that it avoids escalation: the cops get guns, the criminals get guns to equalize, small scale arms race ensues.

there just aren't many gun crimes in britian.....and conflicts with the law rarely escalate to the point were bullets are necessary...compared to say, the US.

truthfully, though....it's really baffled experts why america is so much more violent than most other nations, as far as gun violence...
we don't have the most guns....but we kill the most people.

Hardly anyone here has guns except for farmers. When someone's only got a pen-knife to come at you, and you have stab-armour and a massive extendable truncheon and lots of training, it's not really an issue. Guns are becoming move of a problem in areas like London <sigh> despite the efforts after the Dunblaine tragedy to cut out hand-guns. Mainly due to the "gangsta" culture imported from elsewhere...

People don't have guns here, but if a drug-dealer was armed, they'd send in the "ARU" (Armed Response Unit) which do carry guns. But they only get called in for gun-crime related stuff, so there has to be confidence that guns are already on scene before they step in.

ASP (their telescopic truncheon jobbies) are better than a lame five inch knife any day. Add to that riot shields and training, tactics, tear-gas (not that it has been used in England in the last decade or so), and it's not really that much of an issue. The police had a lot of experience in dealing with civil disruption in the sixties with the Mods and Rockers, the 70s with the miner's strikes, and the 80s with the rioting - all of which involved little or no firearms usage. It's second nature now I guess.

No guns mean no need to be protected from guns, means no need to have guns. The only people I have ever met who have owned guns have been rather bizarre yokel types who keep them locked in a metal box constantly, and only bring them out to polish them or shoot some peasants.
