View Full Version : so i got acupuncture today...
it feels pretty crazy, i think a little worse than a tat. i'll probably get it again, though.
*edit* i learn need to grammer spell right.
I've been tempted to do this for years. Someone I know that does this that used to be very high strung, is all mellow like after a session. Everywhere close to home for me is done by a Coleman, or Smith. If I get it done I need it done by a Chang or a Ling.

i've never done it myself but i've heard from very skeptical people that it works wonders for pain management and things that can't be cured by western medicine, like chronic inflammation (Crohn's). it's definitely worth a shot.

I tried it on myself when I was a kid, but my mom got mad at me and said, "you take those pins off your face right now, mister".

I have also heard alotta good shit about acupuncture. It supposedly can release your stress, align the planets and everything inbetween. I just can't see paying someone to stick me with needles. I don't have a problem with needles. I just can't see giving someone money to poke me with them. I don't care what they can do.

what about giving someone money to poke them? *slaps knee*

I'm skeptical about acupuncture. Other than the placebo effect (the same one which supposedly gives homeopathy its benefits) the only beneficial effects that have been *scientifically* attributed to it are that it can stimulate blood-flow to areas of the epidermis. Useful-ish for some dermatological or vascular ailments, but not much else. However, AFAIK, the treatments (what with being covered in pins, etc) involving having to sit down and chill out. It is not surprising it results in lowered stress and consequently better health.
Personally, I'd rather see more direct ways of tackling stress, but if you have to make a person into a human pin-cusion just to get them to lie the fuck down for five minutes, I guess that's what it takes.

One of my shiatsu teachers told my class that she had a life changing experience the moment the very first needle pierced her skin, which sounds amazing.
I've heard that amazing things can happen with acupuncture. I would love to try it.

Looks like it hurts.
That's why
I said
Fuck it.

you were such a little hellraiser
um, i don't really think it was her fault. i was in an MVA, and my back is pretty tight. it wasn't really hurting at first, but the last twist and 5 minutes wasn't the best feeling ever. it relieved the pain for a little bit, but my back isn't feeling great again. i've been going to physio there for a month, and this was the first time it was ever mentioned/done to me. i'd definately do it again to see if it helps, though.

as far as homeopathy - i didn't believe in it one bit until it was a last resort that i tried and it really worked for me. one day the stuff i was taking for my allergies just plain quit working. i had built up an immunity to it. so i started taking everything i could find...nothing worked. i tried a homeopathic grass/pollen allergy tincture...and within fifteen minutes i could breathe and my eyes weren't watering. i was stunned. i took it the next day...i was fine. never even had to blow my nose. within a few weeks my body had built up an immunity to the allergens (which was how the tincture worked) and i didn't have to take it anymore. i still am a skeptic about it in some ways, but hey...if it works, it works. and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than prescription meds.
you were such a little hellraiser
so nobody thought this was funny? this was obviously funny (http://www.shadow-writer.co.uk/images/hellraiser.jpg)

How can *water with a sugar ball in it* "make your body immune to allergens"? More likely, rather than supressing your body's response to allergens with drugs and anti-histamines, going without treatments and not concentrating on it so much effected a cure. That or the placebo effect. And some people do just grow out of / into allergies.

there's no option for people who've never done it but maybe want to
i think that it shouldn't hurt when done properly. is it expensive?

I hate the term "placebo effect"
mice used in experiments who were just part of the placebo group are also detroyed at the end of the testing run

Urm, as mice are unable to understand the concept of medication, and thus are unable to be deceived into thinking they are receiving a treatment, surely there cannot be a "placebo" group for mice? Surely you mean the *control* group?

Ive heard people use the term placebo as slang for control group before. believe me, It gets real fucking old using proper terminology in the lab all day long so sorry for that disgraceful slip of the tongue, I hope noone was so utterly baffled by my previous statement that they entirely disregarded it.
I know a girl who actually stole two mice before they were to be destroyed after an experiment she was aiding in. She has had them as pets for the past 2 years, highly illegal yes, but screw it the mice are happy lil fuckers.
