Well, the parts anyway.
I'm real proud of myself for putting it together with no major injuries incurred.
Now what? I haven't skated in something like 10 years or so. When I did skate, I was never very good.
What advice do you have so that I won't make an ass out of myself in front of the general public? Keep in mind that I can barely ollie anymore, and I'm not a young whippersnapper like some of ya'll out there.
You are not 14 (or something). :D

do a bit of a practice in a large concrete area where there aren't many people - perhaps a school yard on the weekend, or something.

my soon to be 25 year old brother definately said this about his skateboarding the other night "I gotta find a posse that I can lay some shit down with"
<3
skate bowls and mini-ramps, cause your frail old bones won't be able to skate street anymore.
*edit* damn you edit thing. i vote for there to be a spell checker from now on.

Someone's been paying attention. People really do mistake me for a teenager all the time. I have yet to decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Ok, I personally dont think starting off on Mini ramps and bowls is a good idea, as stated by someone above. Thats just got bad news written all over it. I think if you really cant skate, start off with the basics in an empty parking lot at night (although the last time I did that I got the police called on me and my friends) if not, go to a skatepark, If your lucky you can find someone cool who'll help you out, lay down some tricks and teach you the basics. Skating takes practice, and most people give it up within the first month, so If your not determined or serious you shouldnt even bother with it.
Just learn the basics before you go dropping into mini ramps and bowls, Maybe If you find a nice pool that would be a good start.
And Tony Hawks 40 and still going strong, same with the Z-boys, your NEVER too old to skate, specially if you love doing it. It would be like the bboys are too old to Rap..
Thats bullshit.
Dont believe that.

they sell them at these places called 'stores' and also on this thing called 'the internet'. you can also find info on skat there too. :D
what setup you got, yo?
best way to practise; on the driveway. if you don't have a driveway because you live in an apartment or whatever; just go to the closest parking lot (preferably when its empty). make sure its flat though.
just roll around and get the feel of everything again. don't try to be a hero and attempt kickflips and ollies if you ain't done shit for 10 years.

I opted for cheap stuff.
Blank deck (7.75)
Venture trucks
Shorties hardware
Reds bearings
58mm Black Label wheels
I figure if I get bored of this or lose my ambition, I won't be out too much money. Plus, I only plan to use it for transportation. No fancy stuff here.
So far I've only been messing around in the street in front of my house. The neighbor kids had never seen a "real" skateboard before today. They all wish they had a mom as cool as me.
sweet sweet. i'm keeping my board forever. you never know when it might come in handy. there's been plenty of days where some of my boys will ring up and say "hey man, wanna go for a skatey?".

I used to freestyle way back in the day. (almost twenty years ago). I wasn't half bad on flatland but ramps scared the hell outta me. I miss riding my bike. There was nothing like getting on your bike and just getting the fuck outta the house; away from your homework your nagging ass parents your chores.......everything. When I was on my bike flying down the street with my friends on our way to some big empty parking lot, I was free. Getting on my bike made all my problems go away. Man, do I miss being a kid. :(
I had a skateboard once, also. A Jeff Kendall Mini. I sucked major ass. I could never find my balance point on the damned thing. I was definitely better on two wheels that I was on four.
Every now and again I'll see some kid riding down the street on a freestyle bike and the thought of getting another one will cross my mind for a split second and then I'll be like "fuck that. I can barely get out of bed now without my back hurting. There's no way that could be a good idea." :p

Pop the Ollies in the Driveway, then skate around the block a few times. Then pop the ollies in the driveway. Keep repeating this, and you'll by ollieing in motion before you knows it. That's what I'm gonna try, anyway.
Good shit.
I feel like I'm learning to walk all over again. (y)
i bought a skateboard 8 years ago with all intentions of learning. then i stuffed my back and ankles, so its still sitting in the corner. its a birdhouse deck too with a really cute graphic. ive used it twice. my brother has used it more than me. i should probably sell it

Was it one of those Jeremy Klein hentai graphics with the ludicrous bosom?
I had a deck with the cover of 'Cuban Linx' graphic, just with a white backdrop instead of a red one.
awwww look at her (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/m2ak47_tzar/DSC01860.jpg). she's just begging to go for a skate. :(
shortys M deck / birdhouse birdman wheels / independent trucks / some aus-spec bearings (can't remember their abec).

nah, is "cute" as in cartoon cute with a bear and a cat and a mouse and a duck on it. it has censored wheels [blue] and blue anodised thunder trucks. its also really dusty.

Yo Tzar, Indy's were the bomb for a long time. I got two sets and the axle slipped on all four of them. I was pissed.
Grind King made some nice trucks, do they still exist?
Remember Shorty's were all "This Shit's got pop!"? Two of my friends had Shorty's boards that were flat as fuck, I got one of those cartoon eyes ones in 99, and it was the best thing I'd ridden. A big part of my last hurrah.
my board hasn't got much 'pop' left because my brother will steal it from me when im out and grinds the tail/nose down trying to do manuals. he fucking knows about it too. thing still ollies though.

In that case, don't bother hehehe. Naw, start practising in your backyard before you go out in public...??
i still stick by what i said about bowls and ramps, and shit. starting to skate street later in life isn't gonna end well, but flowing around at parks, and skating in bowls in mini-ramps is a lot more low impact, feels pretty damn good, and looks sick when you have it down. there's no way i'll still be able to skate street when i'm older, so i'll be a fiend on the mini-ramp.
Parking garages, parking lots, and tennis courts. Tennis courts are my favorite to introduce someone to skating in because the ones around here aren't as hard as concrete if you fall, and they are oh so smooth.
My current set up:
enjoi 7.5 (thinnest deck I've ever had. Nice for flip tricks and my small feet. Only used twice)
grind kings (still in tip top shape. Used on and off for 4 years)
52mm zeros (dark stars are the way to go though, but these were a gift. Time for new wheels)
REDS (im not gonna drop $35 on swiss bearings anymore. Had them for years...gotta give em a tune up every so often but still work like new.)

if that deck's a southstar you've got a perfect setup there anyway. i go ventures and southstars everytime.
ps) just skate with everyone else, but dont try anything hard, do some acid drops off curbs and stuf and get the feel for the board again. make sure you're comfortable.

All right, it's official. I can't ollie for shit.
Tips anyone?

practise on grass or carpet. don't try to whilst moving. the ollie is the biggest bitch to overcome in skating so don't get too frustrated. if you are actually getting off the ground and landing it; then just keep practising on grass/carpet to get higher.

 sk8 tuff or go home....
I'm the same. I haven't skated in about 5-6 years and when I did I wasnt really fantastic. Every summer I say I'll go buy one but instead I do nothing and bum around my house all day. As ludicrous as it sounds I'm even starting to think I'm "too old".....I'm 19.
Although this thread has inspired me to start seriously thinking about getting one. I'd would also be a good means of transportation.
