And one of my friends only got back yesterday. I dont know why you would want to go to bali after the whole drug smuggling, terrorist risk thing...I mean sure its cheap but is it really worth the risk to save a few bucks?

The only thing I know about Bali is that the Insecticons from Transformers originated in Bali. They came from a place called 'Demon Swamp', and lived off of the boating people's goods as they travelled down the swamp. There were three Insecticons. The first, Shrapnel, was a Beetle with two prongs coming from its head. The second, Bombshell, had a wicked temper and was also a Beetle, but he was some kind of 'Rinocerus beetle' or something. The third was Kickback, a grasshopper with a mean kick.

^Dont be a wanker, this is serious man. Our government is trying to make out as if this isnt an attack on Australians, because theres alot of internal politics in Indonesia blah blah blah. But if that were the real cause why would the terrorists keep attacking western targets focused on a tourist island. They can't bullshit their way out of the fact that by committing a few hundred useless troups in Iraq and Afghanistan we have made ourselves a target.

I don't think that commiting a few hundred troops makes you a target. There are Canadian peacekeepers in Afghanistan, doesn't make Canada any more of a target *knock on wood*.

my sister called us from there at 1:30 this morning. she was at one of the places that got bombed not too long before it happened. shes [hopefully] leaving tonight. and my brother just got back from a three week surfing holiday.

the local javanese dont mind tourists, but obviously theres a small element of extremeists who push their own violent views. it sucks. mum's having a fit.

Thats because you guys are so freakin far away. And you don't frequent indonesia as a holiday destination. And you appear to be the friendliest country around just about. Plus theres a big difference between a peacekeeping force and actual troops...and yet another difference between Afghanistan and Iraq.

Good point.

However, I would like to point out that some of these people really don't give a shit if it's a 'peacekeeper' or a 'soldier', if it looks like someone is on their turf and unwelcome, they will want to do something about it. I don't know the whole situation in Bali so I think I should read it up before sayin much else.

Then again Afghanistan is quite a bit different than Iraq...

Jamar Islamir (sp?) is pissed off at Australia for a number of reasons. Number one, they are islamic fundamentalists and we are a predominantly christian nation. Secondly, we choose to ally ourselves with countries thousands of miles away rather than our neighbours. And when we do ally ourselves with out neighbours we often come across as looking like cultural imperialists. Third, they see both afghanistan and iraq as reasons to dislike westerners involved in those wars. But, as a part of the 3 major supporters of both wars (America, Australia and Britain), we are especially targets. Also because we are so close and holiday there often. We also support their democratic government, which they are vehemently opposed to. And we don't let assylum seekers in. And we imprison those refugees who come here on illegal boats for extremely long times before sending them back to be further imprisoned in their own countries. I dunno our international reputation is kinda shot right now, especially in regards to our anglo-muslim relations. We really need to address the reasons why they are attacking us rather than improve our terrorism intelligence. Thats my rant for the day :)

well, my sister got back safely. it turns out she was supposed to be in Jimbaran beach on Saturday night, but cos her friend had to be somewhere else, they went there on Friday night instead. They were also walking around kuta square all of saturday. its all too scary.

and what gets me is they successfully managed to kill more of their own people. so its obvious they arent targeting anyone specific, rather they want to cause maximum damage, no matter who gets caught in the middle of it.

mum was freaking. my brother was doing the big "i told her not to go". something bad always happens on her holidays, but usually its just something like the weather or getting shitty at the person she is travelling with. at least she got a whole week of fantastic holiday before it all happened. she said it was pretty amazing over there, and the people were great. she didnt like kuta, more the outlying areas.

she also got bali belly.
