I had an MRI done this afternoon because I got a problem with one of the vertebrae in my neck causing numbness down my right arm. It was a fucking weird experience. You have to lie still while jammed in a really tight space for half an hour so the magnetic whatever's try to line up the hydrogen atoms to get an image of the part of the body you're interested in, the neck in my case (some other medical type person could explain it better than me).

Its really loud (they give you ear muffs to wear) with all these industrial noises going off at regular intervals and at different pitches for what seems like forever. It's really hard to stay still and not get claustrophobic during the process.

You do, however, get to see some cool images of your body at the end. I saw my spinal column at different angles and it being 'built' (there's a gif in the 'animated gif' thread of someones brain that will give you an idea of what it looks like) from the side and from the top.

i had one where they did 30 mins of the MRI..then they pulled me out and I had to remain totally still while they injected me with die and shoved me back in again.

I can honestly say I began sweating and my heart was racing...it was a trippy experience.

i had that^one too. a bunch of times. i kinda like MRIs... it's like nice sleepy time. i fall asleep in there. of course i always start imagining things... like my oxygen being reduced and made unbreathable, and atoms hitting me too hard...

yea im odd :o

Umm so are you okay or what Scotty? You've become very dear to me....or at least I don't want you to die or anything

I've gotten 2 MRI's! Once, when I was having chronic headaches, and another when I bashed my head on the sidewalk and went to the hospital.

I didn't like it the first time. The second time, I was out of it. Either way, it sucked. I have slight claustrophobia, so they made sure I had the MRI machine with a special mirror system set up so I could see outside of the tube and wouldn't freak out.

Modern science is teh sweet

That reminds me of the episode of Growing Pains where the eldest (Mike?) kid is going out with a Marilyn Monroe lookalike cause she puts out, and his dad is all 'do you really have feelings for this girl?' and Mike? says 'Well, I wouldn't like to see her run down by a truck.'

I'm going to see my neuro on friday so I'll know for sure then. From what I can tell, there isn't a serious problem. What it is, is theres a kind of knobbly growth from my C6 vertebrae thats pressing into the cerebral fluid that surrounds the spinal cord and is restricting the messages being sent down my right arm. I wont know what the treatment is until I see Dr. Dan on Friday.

Yeah, I've had several MRI scans...toward the end I started to feel claustrophobic...was joy :p (sarcasm ;))

Hope that its nothing serious man :( My dad's had some tests lately so I can sympathise with the whole process.

So I saw Dr. Dan today and it was good news, all things considered because I'd rather not have had to do any of this at all. Basically, my necks going to get worse over time and I'll have to get surgery on it eventually. But that could be 20-30 years down the track. Or two weeks if my son jumps on me the wrong way.

The bugger of a thing is no more 8ft surf because of the likelyhood of getting nailed by a sandbank or reef if I miss the takeoff or get swallowed in the pit. I get out of any heavy lifting, though.

I had an MRI recently, it sounded a bit like someone banging an oil drum with a hammer.

Glad to hear it's not (too) bad news Scotty.

What's worse is you have to remove all your piercings :(

Yeah that was a bitch, I have a cartilage piercing at the top of my ear, and I had a ring and ball in it...I went to take it out and the ball pinged out of my fingers and went under my bed. I couldn't find it so now I'm wearing a barbell instead (which my girlfriend hates).
