my defrager button is greyed out and there's a message next to it saying that their isn't a dfragmenter program on my pc. what the fuck. how do i reinstall that shit?

reformat. But that shit takes a lot of time. Just use the Search option if nothing else.

i can open it now just not through the the properties window of the hard drive

Urm, google for the appropriate registery strings and then manually reinsert them with regedit?

i think it's the "default" value that's the culprit.

i can access the defrager through start/all programs/accessories. just not at the hard disk propeties box.

I meant what is the key location? "hkey_local_machine/software/blah blah" or whatever.

a lot of that shit is different from mine. im not gonna fuck with it. the few times i have i had call india becuase my windows all of a sudden needed to be reactivated and it wouldn't allow me.

The "hexes" will be different because of how it "exports" the strings (IE converting the ascii symbols to numeric codes) - but you are probably wise not to tinker in a lot of cases.

Maybe try this...

You could extract it from the WinXP Cd. Try running system file check.
Start>Run type: sfc /scannow
Have the WinXP cd in the Cdrom drive.
