yeah, i'm trying to write a good argument that talks about hip hop branding and stuff like that.
an interesting thing about adidas is that it has two distinct identities - adidas originals and adidas performance (they even have different logos) one is focused on sports gear and the other is retro culture like. interesting stuff

Then you have to touch on why the 'culture' branch is so important, especially to an athletics multinational like Adidas. Didn't Nike eventually jump on the retro bandwagon?
It would be fair to say that more of us are interested in Adidas for it's ties to hip-hop culture, rather than their insole technology and cross trainers, is it not?

mmm. good points.
it also has an advantage over nike because of it's "two headed monster" approach - it can target two very large demographics simultaneously, and has sponsorship deals with sports stars AND rap artists.

I still have THE SAME Adidas that I wore during college and to the last Beastie Boys show here in '92 during the Check YouR Head era - so you can include durability in your essay. I love VANS and Converse too - but they aren't as comfortable and don't last long enough like Adidas. (y)

Exactly. And hip-hop is the ultimate 'word of mouth'.
'Rock my Adidas, never rock the Fila.'
'We make a mean team, my Adidas and me.'
I've got some brown suede shell-toes now. A step to the left of the white and blues.
But I suppose the hip-hop thing is like a visual association, too. Like not only rap star portraits, but with kids at hip-hop shows and shit.
And missus wears shell-toes, and I'm so stoked to be with a fine lady rockin her adidas.

This is the history according to my messed up recollection, growing up in the midwestern USA.
When I was little, there was no real product identity for what we called "tennis shoes". Tennis shoes were white canvas shoes with flat soles and we wore them for everything even though we didn't play tennis. They cost about $5 at Target or Kmart.
In about 1974, we became aware of brand names. We got the first designer jeans as well as the first designer tennis shoes. Suddenly, you saw Adidas at the store. You couldn't go to school unless you had Adidas. They were mostly white leather with the three colored stripes (red stripes being most common by far). They had suede ones in funny colors too--those were better than no Adidas, but you really wanted the white leather ones with red stripes. That same year, we got Pumas too, but Adidas were the shit. Adidas were the only consumer good that I successfully pressured my mom to get me. Mom was really hard nosed about wasting money, but eventually with my dad's help, I got her to understand that my status depended entirely upon the three stripes.
Adidas kind of fell out of favor here. You didn't see them any more in the early 80s. People bought Reeboks and Nikes and other shoes, but no one would wear the basic white leather Adidas with three stripes. I think it was partly the backlash of realizing how silly it had been to adore them in the first place. In high school and college, I would never have worn Adidas.
When I first saw Run DMC, I thought it was really quaint that they were rocking the old school Adidas and making them cool again. That was part of Run DMC's attraction to me--that they were making something cool that was completely uncool.
Adidas aren't good for my feet. My feet like New Balance. But I still buy Adidas sometimes -- only white leather with three colored stripes (my current stripes are black). I do it totally for fashion, and I do it for 5th grade Documad. And seriously, about half the time when I put them on, I think "ha ha mom, I can buy something completely unnecessary with my OWN money now." For most people, Adidas probably say something about hip hop. For me and my old friends, it's pre hip hop. But I'm not wearing Calvin or Vanderbilt jeans of my youth, so the hip hop link clearly had an influence.
When I wear my Adidas, I often get old people commenting on them, but in a childhood nostalgia way--the same way people did five years ago when I was wearing the old school Dr. Scholls (imported from Europe) when they weren't available here.
I think the 35th anniversary press has been smart--getting celebrity styles and ones for big cities, etc. It's sort of cheesy, but fun too. It's recognizing that people have a strong emotional connection to certain old brands.

well, i honestly chose to write about this brand because it just seems to be the most sucessful at marketing the image of cool, particularly with the perpetually fashionable old school hip hop image. i personally don't own any adidas clothing, but i would consider buying sneakers.
i don't want to talk about the negative side (sweatshop production, etc) because all major brands are guilty of that.

I truly and honestly freaked out when I found a pair of cheap shell-toes. I had never had a pair before, and the one reason I wanted them was the fact that the Beastie Boys wore/sang about Adidas. They are also the reason I bought an adidas tracksuit, I wanted one like in Netty's Girl but didn't get anywhere close. So yeah, that's why I bought them cause i'm a big fucking nerd and at one point I had a delusion of having them sign them but I don't care about that any more. I did write "beastie boys" on one...this was like 6 years ago probably. Pretty damn uncomfortable, so I never wear them anymore and they make my feet stink like hell.

And 29 was the classiest in person out of all of them. The store had boston, new york (which I probably shoulda got :(), berlin, almost all the non music or city ones aswell (ie the ones with the etched stuff/graphiti).

adidas was the first sports label to sponsor a professional athelete. i'd also like to take this opportunity, to mention that adi dassler's brother, started rival puma. the brothers had such a strong dislike for each other that they requested in their wills; that they be buried at opposite ends of the cemetary.
i've rocked almost every variation of shell toe at some point. a couple pair of CAMPUS, stan smith's and rod lavers. (the only adidas without the III stripes)
adidas has been able to maintain it's brand by never forgetting it's roots. in the early days it was an affordable all purpose sneaker embraced by inner city youths. today they maintain their presence in "urban culture" whilst also maintaining a progessive presence in the heavily saturated professional sports apparel market. adidas is in fact two brands in one.
currently, only my rod lavers are in service. the others are hanging from telephone wires back in canada. i'd def. like to secure a new pair of superstar, purely for trooping about.
viva adidas.

A lot of interesting posts in this thread.
I think I got my first pair of Adidas sneakers when I was in the 3rd grade. I've had Campuses, Lavers, Shells, Comptowns and others, but the last pair I bought were probably my favorites. I got them last year for mad cheap, and I've probably only ever worn them twice because I'm weird about my footwear like that. They're a pair of Decade lows (http://img5.dena.ne.jp/ex52/cb/13/2063869/8/46949672_2.jpg). They look kinda tacky, but I like them. They're just a nice throwback for me. That's what I like about Adidas in general. I don't touch any of that Performance garbage, though, because most of it's just nasty looking. Yeah, hip hop, Run DMC, youth, nostalgia, classic style, hoops; you guys have touched on most of it.

Those ones are laced kinda gay, but yeah. Half of my sneakers, whatever the brand, are some kind of flashy bright colorway like that. I don't know why. And then I usually just end up wearing the neutral ones the most...whites, browns, navy blue etc. Don't ask. People think I'm an idiot when they see all the barely worn shoes in my closet.

They have an interesting collaberation with Yohji Yamamoto called Y3. My friend owns a sports shop, and he had to have several meetings with adidas before they would allow him to be a Y3 stockist (possibly because the majority of his stock is Nike and Hurley - he has a major affiliation with them).
Personally I like the Adidas LA trainer, it's the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn.
