Got real serious, turned to me and said "Chris, that song I just heard you play, put my dick in her mouth, cum on her, was the filthiest, worst music I have ever heard in my life. That piece of garbage should be killed".

He was talking about Too Short's Freaky Tales. Now I know Too Short, Eazy etc is not exactly the best example of true musicianship but he mocks Tribe, Mos, BBoys, DPs, and all the good stuff I play. So I decided to take him down a real dark path: Ice T, the OG, NWA, and such.

What other nasty shit should I play for him so he realizes just how varied hip hop can be? Maybe then he will hate the good stuff less.

I wouldn't take it upon myself to try to educate him directly or otherwise. Probably nothing you say or do will make a difference.

(I've got a friend who sounds a lot like your co-worker; unless it's something acoustic, she judges/juries modern music en masse like that. I tried to get her to listen to Black Eyed Peas or Beasties lyrics but it's too late for her. She's closed to the idea of anything good coming from it. She never used to be that way. Mixed in with that judgemental/harsh attitude is also a huge stubborn streak, so it's not worth it to try to pursue this with her. She's got to discover it on her own and in her own way. When she does, she'll try to sell me on it, having forgotten the conversations we've had to date. I accept it about her and it helps me to stay in check so that I don't let myself become close-minded like that.)

Yeah, but I don't even like 2 Live Crew. Luke Skywalker maybe. "Me & my homies like to play this game…

My work is cool like that. Why would you want to listen to Stern? I'm not trying to torture him, he's a friend. I'm just trying to educate him on the difference between good music, and extra-vulgar bullshit.

Listen to stuff that's actually innovating.

I saw your myspace profile and I was very impressed you can name 100 crappy bands I have never heard of.

Oh, he loves the Misfits 'Where Eagles Dare'. "I ain't no god-dammed sonofabitch" x 50. He doesn't like any reference to the Lord unless it's happy & nice.

When I play PE he say's 'There goes that guy playing the balloon again'.

Wow! Your ignorance kicks ass! You must be of Oriental "dissent".

Don't get all mad at me because all of your communist, nihilist, exhibitionist, ninja, Nazi Surfer, D & D,Dragon Ball, goth, and Ultra - Religious phases have left you feeling unfulfilled and empty. If you don't think any of the music I named is innovative, then you're not paying attention.

Good luck with your band holmes.

maybe he would have been more partial to some historical lyrics such as..

Abraham Lincoln was a good old man. He hopped out the window with his dick in hand. he said, "Excuse me ladies, just doing my duty so why not pull down your pants and give me some booty."

Umm maybe it's just me and I don't know where you work at but you could try being respectful and listening to music that doesn't offend your co-workers. If the dude doesn't dig on hip hop then who gives a shit? Who made you the rap ambassador anyway? It would be one thing if he was coming into your house trying to tell you what's what but that's his place of employment too. I wonder if he's on his Christian message board right now asking his friends what kinda Jesus music he can bring in to piss you off.

I listen to music at work. Some of it has parental advisories, but I have an office and I keep the door to it closed. Whenever someone knocks for me, I lower the volume (which is usually always low to begin with). If someone took offense by something that I played, I wouldn't play that piece again at work.

When I'm on campus, I use an office that can be shared with another person and that person might have students visiting him for open office hours too. I don't play music then to avoid interfering with his concentration or the conversations he might be having with his students.

Even though playing certain types of music might break the ice with some of these students. :D

I'm very respectful. Whoever gets to the office earlier gets to DJ. When I DJ in the office I usually stop playing my music by noon and offer for him to put on his internet radio. When he DJs he plays his music all day long, and never extends the offer to me to put on my music. 90% of the time I'm playing classic rock, or something he can dig, because I'm not trying to be a jerk. I played a minute of like 5 different vulgar songs yesterday, we had fun with it.
