View Full Version : I am so fucking sick of college

Something Q said made me think of this...

I can not wait to be done with college. I have enjoyed it so far (this is my 5th year though), I like the social aspect, the environment, but at this point, I feel like it's holding me back from living my real life. There is so much that I want to do that I haven't been able to because of school, because I just get stressed or whatever about it and can't do anything else because of that and time constraints.

I can't wait untill I am out and only have to worry about work and I can actually save money to spend on a camera and make my own damn movies and not worry about being graded on them and raaaaaaaah!!! I can't wait to travel or take a road trip or whatever!

I graduate in the spring, thank god, but it's a real struggle to be motivated at all so far this semester. I'm just so sick of homework and papers. I love to analyze things and I love to write papers actually but I just hate having them looming over my head constantly.

I know I'm extremly lucky to go in the first place, but, yeah...that's all for my rant.

besides some of the mindless tasks...i really dont mind it

the fact that i dont care about my grades as long as they arent failing does change the normal perspective though...

Well I'm talking about right after I'm done, like the year after when I'm just going to do what I want. I'm looking forward to being able to work more because as of now I make roughly 400-500 dollars a month and much of that has to go towards film. I am excited at the aspect of figuring out what I'm going to do, and I'm planning on living in another country for at least 6 months, etc. etc.

Haha, don't worry I know I'm idealistic about it, but one can hope, right?? I'm just hoping for some leeway before "real life" starts (this is also inspired by many of the mid-twenty people I know that are still in that limbo).

oh, and as far as travelling goes

i am using my university to my full advantage in trying to get somewhere for at least a month next summer.

top choice is a energy program in austrailia. but there are plenty of other places i would gladly go to if i can get the scholarship money to help out

hahahah! i would give anything to be back in college when you actually have time to travel or take a road trip... and saving money??? hahahaha.

yeah, I was thinking about my budget after I graduate. Man, things just keep going UP and up and up.

I will need to get a car, so that's payments and higher insurance right there. Then perhaps a place with the boyfriend, which means splitting things, which is higher then with several roommates in a house. Then eventually I want to buy a house in my lifetime, that's trying to put money away for that. Then there is school debt to pay off, and mine is going to be HUGE.

It's redonkulous I tell you.

Also, those who complain about not traveling... I've traveled once to Mexico (Mexico City, Oaxaca, etc). That was when I was 16 years old. I'm 21. I haven't been anywhere else since and because of school, I won't be going anywhere for another two years. Then I have all those bills to take care of. So stop your whining and count your lucky stars if you've been to more than once place :P

see that's the thing, i think i DO have some idea how safe it is here (i'm sure i wont fully understand it till i'm out, but still, i have some conception of it), and that's why i don't want to leave. they'll have to give me my degree kicking and screaming

I definetly know that I'm being a priviledge lil bitch, complaining about college. Of course it's safe, that's why I wanna get out! But I'm not delusional, I know that I'll want to be back someday, probably as soon as I leave. But as of right at this moment, I don't want anything more than to not worry about assignments.

i economics class last night, we did problems related to this case study of some guy who was trying to budget his money.

over a 10 year period, he planned to pay off his credt card bills, school loans, pay for a car, rent an apartment, save for retirement, and put enough money away so he could put money down on a condo

he came scratching by while doing all that on a steady 48 grand a year...

thankfully i hsould graduate without any loans or debt to pay off, so at least i won't be in the hole right away...

but i love school. i want to get out of undergrad so i can start doing graduate work, research, and learning really fun stuff. im fully aware of how priviledged i am for being able to go to school and not worry about a job. and im gonna graduate from undergrad without debt, which is even luckier.

i love learning. :o

its a little bit of both for me, out of college for 4 years now.

I can appreciate how much college sucked at the end...same old same old bs..paying to not pay attention, cramming then purging...are we thereeeeee yet.

The workworld sucks, the commitment, the deadlines...the politics, but then at 5 you have no homework, clean slate, money in the bank. You find mentors, and peers who share your life, a support group.

I just miss getting ripped until 4 am on a tuesday knowing you were going to skip classes the next day, and you'd feel no pain for doing so.

my old college roommates and i were marvelling over the fact that it "appeared" that we had no money in college, but in fact did pretty much everything we ever wanted. there's a great show in San Francisco? let's go! spring break? where to this year! I'm homesick. Drive home 8 hours! You feel like partying? Let's hit the liquor store! Wherever the fukin' money came from, I have no clue, but it seems like I did a lot more on a lot less back then.

And to whoever it was who talked about the drinking till 4am after deciding you'll skip class - it's SOOO true! Road trips and partying were constantly available because all you had to do was skip class! Ahhh, the good 'ol days...

My friends always say "Diana, you're so lucky to still be in school. I wish I was, working all the time sucks."

And the way I look at it is this. My friends went to school with their parents paying. They lived on, or about 3 miles away from campus at all times. They had schedules that were relaxed enough that they could take naps during the day. They went out and partied on weekends, and went to football games.

I'm going to college 3 days a week now, because I live 30 miles from campus and hate to commute in DC-rush hour EVERY day, so I've knocked it back to three. In order to graduate by the time my parents retire and move down to NC (next May), I have to take 18 credits this semester. I also pay for all of my college, and my car, so I have to work 20 hours a week to pay for that, as well as two other jobs I do part-time for "extra spending money" that will go towards car repairs or emergencies.

So in any given week, I'm on campus or at work ALL DAY, from about 9 AM - 6 PM on average. The weekends are my time to read and write papers. I don't have much time to myself, or time to relax. At least with full-time jobs, you have time off on Saturday and Sunday. So when my friends say "Wow, school is so great, I wish I was there," I want to yell at them "I work MORE hours than you, for work and school, make LESS money that goes RIGHT BACK to my school. I don't have the luxury to have everything of mine paid for by my mom and dad, and I don't have time for fun college things like football and drinking, or whatever else you did that made college so great. So fuck off."

i'm about sick of it too. mainly my history 201 class. you'd have to be there to completely understand but it's a 200-level course and my history 484 is easier. this is one of the hardest classes i've taken mainly because the prof focuses on some of the most trivial bullshit in history.

it's US history and i probably have a C
that 484 is south african history which i've never studied before and i guarantee i have an A.

then i gotta work because i commute and i make a whoppin' $5.50/hr because the only jobs in this shit town are campus jobs.

i could go on for days. but i won't.

Yeah, I'm taking 4 upper-level histories now, and they seem to be better than my lower-level ones. One midterm, one final, one paper for each. Whereas the lower levels have like 4 tests and a shitload of homework. Sucks.

Brabs, in regards to you expressing how much you want to be out of college, don't listen to the sarcastic critics! Ignore the naysayers. You can make your life what you want it to be. (I so totally just sounded like a Cat Stevens song!) I've been out of college for a few years and I have traveled to other countries, I plan and take road trips all the time. It's true that saving money is hard and so is heavily pursuing things, in depth, outside of your job. Sometimes I think, why am I working to make money to afford crap I don't need? What am I giving my life to? Living for the daily experience of life itself?? Is that worth waking up for? But life IS satisfying because of the freedom and the lack of the chains of commitment to a program. In college the most satisfying thing is a sense of purpose, of seeing yourself clearly and directly working towards something in sight and of being in an environment where the common goal is similar to yours. Without the support and guidance and orderliness of a university, it can be hard to stay on track. But YOU know what you want to do, which is incredible, and you've said before that you know you would succeed in anything you try to do, so you would find it rewarding to direct yourself. You'll be able to save money and take trips. Just find a way to live cheaply (live with your parents!) and know your priorities.

nah, just a big, shitty lecture. is that what a seminar is? maybe they're called seminars at your school and lectures at mine. hmmm... well i feel kinda dumb now.

At UMD, seminars are usually only 15 people, and highly interactive. You have to do all the readings and participation is 30% of the grade...plus, a 15-page paper using only primary sources. It's HIST208 here, and I also get to have a SENIOR seminar, HIST408. It's the same thing, only with a 25-page paper, because it's a capstone course that encorporates everything you've learned the past 4 years.

I just wanted to learn history, man. I never wanted to BE a historian. But oh, well. It'll look good on the resume. :o

Wow, thank you...just...thanks :)

I understand everyone has different situations, and I'm not going to feel guilty for the fact that mine (aka living with my parents) will allow me to do these types of things . I will be paying for my own schooling through my loans later, and the way some people post, it's like I should feel guilty or stupid for thinking these things can happen. But I can understand if people had those kinds of goals and it didn't happen, or whatever, and think I have false hope of some kind, but I don't - it's going to happen and I'm extremely lucky for that.
